The Canadian Arctic. Iconic. Majestic. A huge part of the way we view ourselves. Vast ice flows, polar bears, walrus, seals, caribou, pack ice and huge floating icebergs, the size of hotels, calving off the glaciers. The Arctic summer with wildlife abounding and wild flowers spread across the tundra. Franklin’s doomed expedition searching for the Northwest passage. The Inuit way of life and art.

But for how long? Our Arctic is changing quickly and perhaps forever. Climate change affects all of it.

ROMTravel invites you to come see the Canadian High Arctic before it disappears, in a truly unique and exclusive experience that only ROMTravel provides. Your special resource person and guide to understanding the Arctic ecosystem is Canada’s favorite science journalist Bob McDonald, of CBC’s Quirks, & Quarks. Bob makes science accessible, entertaining and fascinating. He has been reporting on and studying climate change for thirty years.

Come travel part of the famous Northwest Passage with us. If you have ever wanted to go, now is the time and this is the one and only trip of its kind from the ROM.

As Bob, who has been to the Arctic numerous times as a journalist, says:

“The ship did slaloms among the numerous icebergs. Truly spectacular. Traveling up the fjords to the toes of glaciers was a journey among a rainbow of colours from plants only a few inches high that coated the landscape. The High Arctic is truly another world.” —Bob McDonald

It will be the experience of a lifetime full of images, memories, and people never to be forgotten.

Join us,

Eric Morrison

Eric Morrison

Eric has lead trips for ROMTravel to Chile to visit the ALMA deep space observatory, to Easter Island, Argentina, Japan and–most recently–to Russia to visit the space program there.

As a journalist he had extensive experience in national and international news, including overseas postings and travelling worldwide with television news crews to a variety of places you probably wouldn’t want to visit. Eric served as Vice-President of CTV News, as Executive Producer of the CTV National News and Producer of Canada AM during his twenty years at CTV. He then moved to the Canadian Press as CEO from 1997 to 2011.

Most recently he has been Executive Producer of a BNN program about high tech startups in Canada called The Disruptors hosted by ex-CBC Dragon Bruce Croxon.

He has been on the ROMTravel committee since 2011.

Eric sits on The Board of Governors for the National Newspaper Awards (Canada's Pulitzers) and The Board of Directors for WE Charity.

His hobbies include cycling, gardening, and playing tennis.

Bob McDonaldBob McDonald brings his engaging and enthusiastic style to the Arctic, which he has visited many times as a journalist. It is a topic he has been studying for thirty years, well before it became fashionable and before the effects of climate change.

Bob is the award-winning host of CBC's Quirks & Quarks and The National’s science correspondent. He makes science understandable and enjoyable.

His latest book, Canadian Spacewalkers: Hadfield, MacLean and Williams Remember the Ultimate High Adventure, was released in the fall of 2014.

He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2011 “for his contributions, as a journalist and educator, to the public understanding of science.”

On top of all that he is an awfully nice, easygoing, guy!

Bob has been the resource person for two ROMTravel trips: one to the Atacama Desert in Chile and one to Russia, which focused on the Russian space program.

DAY 1 | OTTAWA

Ottawa is the gateway to the North. Canada’s capital city is a dynamic hub of activity with the population hovering just around one million. Home to impressive national sites, landmarks, and some of the countries best collections about the Arctic.  We’ll stay in the Historic Chateau Laurier by the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and gather in the afternoon for a visit to the Museum of Nature to explore the Arctic exhibit followed by a cocktail reception with Arctic inspired fare.

DAY 2 | QAUSUITTUQ (RESOLUTE BAY)

Qausuittuq, or “place with no dawn,” is named for its dark winters. But in summer, the sun persists constantly from about April 29 to August 13 each year. The community’s English name, Resolute Bay, honours the HMS Resolute.

“Resolute” also describes local Inuit who were relocated, in 1953, from Inukjuak, Quebec, and Mittimatalik by the Canadian government. Our early morning charter flight will bring us to Qausuittuq, where we will embark the Ocean Endeavour.

• Visit the Franklin Expedition graves at Beechey Island

• Seek wildlife in Tallurutiup Imanga (Lancaster Sound), Canada’s largest and newest Marine Protected Area

• Hike on Devon Island, the largest uninhabited island on Earth

• Enjoy an Inuit cultural welcome at Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet)

• Marvel at the tundra in summer bloom• Watch icebergs calving from

Greenland’s glaciers

HIGHLIGHTS

Adventure Canada itineraries may be subject to change without notice due to weather, ice, and sea conditions.

Page 9: EXPEDITION CRUISE High Arctic Explorer€¦ · Uummannaq Fjord in northwest Greenland is the country’s second-largest system of fjords. It is considered Greenland’s sunniest place

DAY 3 | BEECHEY ISLAND

In 1845, Sir John Franklin set out from England with HMS Erebus and Terror, attempting to sail through the Northwest Passage. Franklin’s party overwintered at Beechey Island where three of his men died.

Numerous search parties later used Beechey as a depot and rendezvous. Amundsen, Bernier, and Larsen all visited Beechey. Thomas Morgan of HMS Investigator was buried there in 1854 alongside Franklin’s men. The graves and the ruins of Northumberland House are a haunting memorial.

DAY 4 | DEVON ISLAND

Devon Island is the largest uninhabited island on Earth at over fifty thousand square kilometres. The island’s geology is stunning, and very visible as we sail the coast. Flat topped mountains, glacial valleys, and a substantial ice cap give Devon Island its unique character.

Devon Island has a rich human history, and boasts historical and archeological features. We’ll also be on the watch for wildlife.

DAY 5 | TALLURUTIUP IMANGA (LANCASTER SOUND)

We will spend the day exploring the ocean wilderness of Tallurutiup Imanga (Lancaster Sound). In August of 2017, this enormous body of water was declared a National Marine Conservation Area.

Large populations of marine mammals, including narwhal, beluga, and bowhead whales transit and feed in this area. There is a great selection of landing sites available to choose from, depending on weather, wildlife, and sea conditions.

9

Page 10: EXPEDITION CRUISE High Arctic Explorer€¦ · Uummannaq Fjord in northwest Greenland is the country’s second-largest system of fjords. It is considered Greenland’s sunniest place

DAY 6 | NORTH BAFFIN ISLAND

Today will be an expedition day in the truest sense as we explore northern Baffin Island’s mountainous fjords. Weather, ice, and opportunity will determine our route among the spectacular geology. Expert spotters will be on deck, searching for seabirds, including thick-billed murres and kittiwakes. We’ll also watch for marine mammals and scan the shores for muskoxen, caribou, and bears.

DAY 7 | MITTIMATALIK (POND INLET)

Mittimatalik is a bustling Arctic community in a beautiful setting. The views of nearby Bylot Island are stunning. We will have a chance to explore the town, including its excellent library and other facilities.

A cultural presentation at the Community Hall is not to be missed—arts and crafts may be available here, too. The Northern and Co-op stores offer a unique perspective on life in the Arctic, and sometimes have carvings as well.

DAY 8 | AT SEA — DAVIS STRAIT

Our onboard presentation series will continue as we steam across Davis Strait towards Greenland. Our expedition team will deepen your understanding of the Arctic as we go! This is an excellent time to enjoy workshops and group learning, watch a documentary, or dive into our library.

While out on deck, keep your binoculars ready for minke and humpback whales amid potential pack ice, as well as the seabirds that are sure to mark our passage.

Adventure Canada itineraries may be subject to change without notice due to weather, ice, and sea conditions.

Page 11: EXPEDITION CRUISE High Arctic Explorer€¦ · Uummannaq Fjord in northwest Greenland is the country’s second-largest system of fjords. It is considered Greenland’s sunniest place

DAY 9 | WESTERN GREENLAND

Greenland’s west coast is simply stunning. An expedition stop in this area will offer many outstanding features of interest. Hikers, walkers, photographers, and contemplators will all be equally delighted. From mighty mountains to the tiniest tundra flowers, we will have much to explore.

DAY 10 | UUMMANNAQ FJORD

Uummannaq Fjord in northwest Greenland is the country’s second-largest system of fjords. It is considered Greenland’s sunniest place. A favourable climate—coupled with proximity to coastal travel routes—has made the fjord system a popular destination for Greenlandic Inuit.

The region has been settled for thousands of years. The famous ‘Greenland mummies’ dating to the 1400s were found in Qilakitsoq, near the town of Uummannaq, perched on the slopes of a heart-shaped mountain.

DAY 11 | ILULISSAT

Ilulissat translates literally into “iceberg”, an apt name for this site at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord—a unesco World Heritage Site. The icefjord is the outlet of the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, source of many of the icebergs in the North Atlantic.

Here, we will cruise in our fleet of Zodiacs to appreciate the icebergs. We will also visit the bustling town of Ilulissat, with its museums, cafes, craft shops, and busy fishing harbour.

11

Page 12: EXPEDITION CRUISE High Arctic Explorer€¦ · Uummannaq Fjord in northwest Greenland is the country’s second-largest system of fjords. It is considered Greenland’s sunniest place

DAY 12 | SISIMIUT COAST

People have lived in the Sisimiut area for 4,500 years. For the first 2,000 years, the people of the Saqqaq culture occupied the area. Approx. 2,500 years ago, new people brought the Dorset culture to the Sisimiut area. They lived here for 1,500 years and were followed by the people of the Thule culture—the ancestors of the current population. All these cultures came from Canada. The people primarily lived on fish, birds and mammals such as whales and seals. The ice-free conditions in the sea around Sisimiut, including some of Greenland’s deepest fjords, allow us to sail in waters that are home to many whales and seals.

DAY 13| KANGERLUSSUAQ

Sondre Stromfjord is one of the longest fjords in the world and boasts 168 kilometres of superb scenery. We end our adventure by sailing up this dramatic fjord as the sun rises to greet us.

Kangerlussuaq, the town at its eastern head, is a former US Air Force base and Greenland’s primary flight hub. Here, we will disembark the Ocean Endeavour and transfer to the airport for our return charter flight.

Adventure Canada itineraries may be subject to change without notice due to weather, ice, and sea conditions.

ACTIVITY LEVELAdventure Canada endeavours to accommodate all pas-sengers, subject to the specific itineraries and terrain of our excursions, vessels characteristics and accommoda-tions. Adventure Canada tours necessitate that passen-gers be in reasonably good health. Zodiac cruises and transfer times can be lengthy. You must be able to climb stairs between decks on the ship. You must also be able to climb the external gangway stairs to transfer between the ship and the Zodiacs. Our expedition team and ship crew are available to assist you in and out of the Zodiacs, both on shore and at the gangway. Adventure Canada expeditions may involve extensive walking in variable weather conditions over sometimes sandy or uneven terrain. Wherever possible while on shore excursions, we break into smaller, guided groups according to interest and physical ability. This may mean one small group going off on a strenuous, two-hour hike on steep terrain, while another explores the area in and around the landing beach, keeping to relatively level terrain and short distances. Generally speaking, once a few people are ready to return to the ship, the Zodiacs are usually available to take you back at the time of your choosing. To inquire about whether our adventures are suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONSAdventure Canada is committed to extending a high level of customer service to all travellers, including people with disabilities. At the time of booking please contact our Client Services Team to discuss your needs.

ZODIAC CRAFTZodiacs are the favoured means of transportation for shipboard expeditions and, indeed, wherever shallow waters and beaches ring the shoreline. They are stable, versatile craft that cruise at approximately four knots; in windy weather they can make for rather splashy rides. Wet gear is essential for any Zodiac tender, and Zodiac drivers are authorized to refuse embarkation to anyone inappropriately attired. Life preservers are absolutely compulsory and will be provided. Zodiac landings will gen-erally entail disembarking onto rocky or gravelly beaches. The beach landings may be wet, meaning that there may be some spray en route to shore, and that you may have to step into water up to 25 centimetres / 10 inches deep.

MEDICAL FACILITIESPassenger safety is of utmost importance to us. This expedition is intended for persons in good health, and thus our tours may not be suitable for those who are not fit for long trips for any reason, including disability, heart, or other health conditions. Should any such condition become apparent, or should passenger safety become a concern, we reserve the right at our sole discretion to decline embarkation prior to the commencement of the tour or to disembark passengers prior to the completion of the tour. Our vessel is not equipped to handle serious medical conditions. Medical and Emergency Evacuation insurance is mandatory. If you require specific medica-tions, please ensure that you bring a supply adequate to last you for the duration of the journey and take care to properly pack them to ensure safe transport. Once aboard ship, we will be travelling in remote communities where prescriptions cannot be replaced. Select vessels have an onboard doctor; should you require the doctor's services, a consultation and treatment fee will apply. Any charges will be debited from your onboard account. To inquire about whether our tours are suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

GRATUITIESAdventure Canada expedition team and guides do not accept tips.

The procedure for providing a gratuity may differ from tour to tour. Your host will outline this on each tour.

Our ships’ crew work hard to please, and tips are ap-preciated. In fairness to all those who work together to make your trip enjoyable, tips are collected at the end of the voyage and distributed equitably among the crew. Although we leave tip amounts to your discretion, past passengers have asked for a recommended amount. We suggest a rate of $15 USD per day, per passenger.

AIRFAREWhen purchasing your airline tickets to meet us at our point of departure, please ensure that they are change-able or refundable; Adventure Canada is not responsible for missed connections due to late charter flights or changes / delays / interruptions in the ship’s intended itinerary and will not reimburse you for rebooking fees or new ticket charges incurred.
