Lesson 1 - I can understand the theme of love and write a sonnet.

Task 1: One of the key themes in the play Romeo and Juliet is love. In this lesson you will explore this theme in another text form.

Look at the images below and write around them all the words and phrases you would associate with them.

Task 2: The idea of love is perceived in many different ways. The simplest and nicest way is the idea that it is what everyone strives to have in their lives to make them worthwhile. Love was a major theme in a lot of Shakespearean plays and poems.

From learning poetry, you will already know that a sonnet is a love poem which is 14 lines.

One famous sonnet is by Elizabeth Barnett Browning,

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.I love thee to the depth and breadth and heightMy soul can reach, when feeling out of sightFor the ends of being and ideal grace.I love thee to the level of every day’sMost quiet need, by sun and candle-light.I love thee freely, as men strive for right.I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.

Page 4: Expectations: - Kings Heath Boys  · Web viewVladimir Propp argued that there were 8 types of characters. Below is how each character type is used within the film ‘Shrek’. Below

I love thee with the passion put to useIn my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.I love thee with a love I seemed to loseWith my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,I shall but love thee better after death.

Here, the poet is discussing how her love is so consuming that it is more powerful than anything she can imagine. She feels that she can lose her faith before she can lose the love for this man, which was shocking, because everyone believed in God and that was more powerful than love, at the time.

Task 3: What makes a good love story?

In today’s society, Romeo and Juliet is not seen as a ‘good’ love story, because of their inevitable deaths.

What do you think makes a good love story today?

I think a good love story should include _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Task 4: Carol Ann Duffy, a poet who you will study at GCSE, created a poem based on the theme of love and how dangerous it is. Duffy looks at how love creates vulnerability and weakness.

Valentine is a poem that offers an unconventional approach to the traditional, romantic, commercially driven idea of a sugar-coated Valentine's day. It shines the spotlight on that most common of everyday kitchen vegetables, the onion, and infuses it with drama and symbolism. It compares love to that of an onion, revealing that love has many layers and it can not and is not always easy or simple to be in love.

Read the poem below:

Valentine

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion. It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.

Page 5: Expectations: - Kings Heath Boys  · Web viewVladimir Propp argued that there were 8 types of characters. Below is how each character type is used within the film ‘Shrek’. Below

It promises lightlike the careful undressing of love.

Here.It will blind you with tearslike a lover. It will make your reflectiona wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion. Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithfulas we are,for as long as we are.

Take it.Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring,if you like.Lethal.Its scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife.

Summarise the poem, in no more than 50 words, to show your understanding:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This poem can be compared to Romeo and Juliet through the theme of love and how dangerous it can be. Romeo and Juliet felt empowered by their love for each other, but it ended up being their downfall as it was forbidden and destined to end in death.

Task 5: You can see that the poet has used a range of poetic techniques to convey the strong feelings of the character. Complete the grid below to show your understanding of the poetic techniques used:

Task 6: You are going to create your own poem based on the theme of love.

Firstly, think about a situation where you (or you could create a fictional character) have felt love. This could be a platonic love with your best friend, a familiar love with your parents or siblings, or a romantic love for your character.

It will be useful to mind map your ideas as a starting point.

Next create a bank of words and phrases that you are going to use to convey your love.

Finally, write your poem, it must include:

Sonnet – 14 lines Romance Alliteration Metaphor Stanzas Emotive language Sophisticated vocabulary

Challenge: Could you make your metaphor extended and use it throughout the poem – like Carol Ann Duffy did in ‘Valentine’.

Email your complete poem to your class teacher.

Lesson 2: I can evaluate the use of character and write a character description.

Task 1: As discussed in last week’s lessons, Romeo and Juliet was one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. There were many adaptations of the play and stories based on the fatal love between the two characters.

Think about your favourite stories, books or films. Think about the characters in it and why they are used.

Most stories follow a pattern and have specific characters. Vladimir Propp argued that there were 8 types of characters.

Below is how each character type is used within the film ‘Shrek’.

Below are the character types and their role in the story. For each character title, match it to a character in Romeo and Juliet.

Character Type Role R&J Character Why they are that ‘type’The Hero The main character who is

usually good

Page 8: Expectations: - Kings Heath Boys  · Web viewVladimir Propp argued that there were 8 types of characters. Below is how each character type is used within the film ‘Shrek’. Below

The Princess The ‘prize’ for the hero, usually marries the hero

The False Hero Takes credit for something the hero does or tries to marry the princess

The Villain Fights the hero and is usually bad/evil

The Dispatcher Sends the hero on his quest

The Helper Helps the hero in his quest, gives him advice and support

The Donor Prepares the hero in his quest or gives him some magical object

The Princess’ Father Competitive with the hero and usually sets him a task to complete to win his daughter

Task 2: Compare the characters in Romeo and Juliet with the characters from book/film/story.

Consider the similarities and the differences between the characters.

For example:

Romeo and Juliet vs Shrek

Romeo vs Shrek:

Similarities:

They both fight to protect the woman they love and are willing to do anything to be with her. Romeo kills himself when he thinks Juliet is dead; Shrek takes a potion to turn him into a human when he thinks Fiona wants to be human again.

They both have a best friend who helps them: Romeo has Friar Lawrence, Shrek has Donkey.

They are both exiled from their hometowns: Romeo is sent to Mantua when he kills Tybalt; Shrek is isolated in his swamp for being an ogre.

Differences:

Shrek is an ogre who people fear; Romeo is loved by many people. Shrek doesn’t have a family so is looking for one in Fiona; Romeo has a family who

loves him. Shrek is weary to trust people because he is angry at being alienated his whole life.

Task 3: Character Descriptions

Character descriptions help to develop an image in the reader’s head of how the character looks, thinks, acts and interacts with others.

Character descriptions can also change and develop the plot of the story. If Romeo was not a sensitive character who fell in love easily, at the beginning of the play, he would not have met Juliet.

Read the following character descriptions:

Dink

Deep inside the darkest cave lived a hideous creature known as Dink. Covered from head to toe in grotesque white pimples and crusty mud-soaked skin, you can smell Dink before you can EVEN see him. On the very top of his head lives a family of lice that play all day in his bright green, unwashed hair. His enormous muscles escape from his tiny clothes which are soaked in sweat. Not only is Dink disgusting he also has a terrible attitude.

Annabella

On the very top of a magical mountain lived an enchanting and beautiful princess called Annabella. Her auburn hair was thick, shiny and glossy and tumbled down her shoulders in waves. She wore a crimson dress that glistened in the light and long, silk, pink gloves on her tiny hands. Annabella was quite a shy girl that blushed when talking.

Page 10: Expectations: - Kings Heath Boys  · Web viewVladimir Propp argued that there were 8 types of characters. Below is how each character type is used within the film ‘Shrek’. Below

George

In a mystical forest was an old wooden house and, in that house, lived a handsome young man named George. His charming and friendly attitude meant that he was extremely likeable, and he had lots of friends. He had bright blonde hair and crystal blue eyes that twinkled in the moonlight. George was an adventurous man who loved to go on dangerous quests.

Wanda

Wanda, a wicked and selfish witch, was plotting a plan as usual. She cackled and sang (although very badly) as she stirred her cauldron. Her enflamed orange hair tangled and brittle like her mop. Dark black lipstick covered her lips and half of her teeth. Her ragged dress was filthy with ash from her dusty cauldron. Wanda was extremely rude and hated people.

Task 4: Write your own character description.

Imagine you have been asked to describe the character in the image to somebody who has never seen them before. Make sure you write as much detail as possible.

You can create a background for this character and give him a story, to help develop your description.

Success Criteria:

Figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, etc Details of his appearance Details of his personality Accurate punctuation Sophisticated vocabulary

Task 2: Read the example description.

December Beach Days in HawaiiA beach in Hawaii on a December day is like a day at a lake in mid-August. The beach smells fresh, almost like a new ocean breeze air freshener. The sand is hot and looks like gold blended in with little white specks; it sparkles like the water running off the swimmers back and feels like walking on coals from a burning grill. Not far from the shore, you can see the coral sitting still in the wild and shallow water. Turtles drift in to see all the people. The palm trees sway in the air from the forceful wind. Ina distance, a house is beautifully placed right by the water, so it can look across the ocean each and every day. People are laughing and playing in the burning sand, and others are relaxing on the beach bronzing their skin while enjoying the bright rays of light coming from the sun. From a far distance the ocean is a deep navy blue; waves come in like a bulldozer from all the wind. At night everything is still. Waves are still coming in but not as hard, while the beach is cleared from all the people. All you can hear is the waves of the ocean and the light breeze coming from the giant palm trees. The beach is a spectacular place. Leaving it is excruciating and difficult to do.
