PeopleoHenthinkthatlivinginAfricamustbecheapbecausemanypeopleinAfricaarepoor.Well,Ihavenewsforyou.ThecostoflivinginLiberiaparallelswhatIwasspendingonfood,rentandgoingoutinManha.an,whereIlivedbeforeImovedhere.Letmesaythatagain.LivinginMonroviacanbeasexpensiveaslivinginNewYorkCity.

Deepbreath.

Ofcourse,youdon’tneedtospendyourhard‐earnedsalaryonsushieveryweekandHeinekenseverynight,butwhenitcomestofindingaplacetolive,youneedtobepreparedforexpensive.Atwo‐bedroombeachsideduplexinSinkorwithaccesstoapoolcostsaround$3.5kamonth,giveortake.It’snotgoingtosurpriseyouthatmostpeople,evencouplesandolderprofessionals,decidetoshare.

AccordingtoUNstaLsLcs,Liberia hasepidemicratesofviolence,sexualandotherwise.ThisisfocusedpredominantlytowardsthelocalpopulaLon,parLcularlythepoorandvulnerable,butyou’llwanttokeepthisinmindasyoumoveabout.

WhenIwasrunningmybar,ourstaffwouldn’tdaretrytogohomeaHer11pm.Allofthem,menandwomen,youngandold,agreeditwassimplytoodangerous.Ifthepolicedidn’tgiveyoutrouble,the“rogues”wouldgetyouforsure.AHermyassistantchefwasrobbedatknifepointwhilewaiLngforataxi,wedecidedtotransformthefurnituretomaRressesonthefloor,wherethestaffparLLonedthemselvesandsleptundisturbedunLlmorning.Itkepteveryonesafe,andsafeisthefoundaLonforhappy.
