REACHING SOON-TO-BE READERS in new and meaningful ways!

At Ready Readers, we believe it’s important to measure the impact

of our work. So each year, we assess our outcomes. And we

know that, on average, 85 percent of the children we serve enter

kindergarten with emergent skills to become successful readers.*

That’s an exciting statistic — but our work is never done!

We continually adapt our programming to better meet the needs

of these children. In addition to weekly storytime and new

gift books for each child, Ready Readers also provides gift books

for teachers along with related activities, professional development

opportunities, state-approved workshops, our new Book-A-Day

program, and free literacy-based field trips.

Beyond our programming, we as a society are also making

progress. Studies by the National Center for Education Statistics

show the gap in school readiness between rich and poor children

entering kindergarten closed significantly — by 10 to 16 percent

— from 1998 to 2010. The change is attributed to improvements

in the skills of children living in low-income communities, who

are “getting more of what political scientist Robert Putnam calls

‘Goodnight Moon time’ than they did in the 1990s.”†

While there are still challenges ahead, our efforts are paying off.

Won’t you join us in the exciting movement of preparing all of

our children to read — regardless of socio-economic background?

Please volunteer to read or donate to Ready Readers today.

Because kids who read succeed!

Sincerely yours,

Matt and Lisa

Once again this year, we worked with an independent researcher to survey a sample of preschool children at the beginning of the school year and again at the end to measure the effect of our program. We compared our results against those from a comparison site without Ready Readers. We found:

• Increases in exposure to and engagement with books and reading.

• Gains in pre-reading skills, such as identifying letters and singing a simple song.

• Improvements in reading-related behaviors, such as holding a book and turning pages correctly or pretending to read.

At Ready Readers, we’re always exploring new ways to strengthen the connection between our readers and their young audiences, so weekly classroom visits are enjoyable for everyone.

Ready Readers University sets our volunteers up for success. We offer training programs, in-classroom mentoring, e-newsletters and online resources. We listen to volunteer feedback and develop curriculum to address their challenges and support their development.

This year’s workshops and café sessions included: • “Bringing Ready Readers Gift Books to Life!”• “Setting the Stage for a Successful Read-Aloud Session”• “Reducing the Effects of Toxic Stress by Using Mindfulness

Techniques”• “Finding the Rhythm & Flow in Your Read-Aloud Session”

Ready Readers gives away 576,500 GIFT BOOKS! To encourage reading outside the classroom, Ready Readers gives each child in our program six or seven new, high-quality, personalized books every year to keep. As our numbers grow, our gift book totals are really stacking up! Since our inception in 1997, Ready Readers has given away 576,500 gift books to eager young learners. READY READERS TEACHER WORKSHOPS BOOK-A-DAY PROGRAM

To promote classroom reading beyond our weekly visits, Ready Readers piloted the Book-A-Day program this year.

The premise is simple: Provide teachers a set of five books with a common theme, along with ideas for related activities. Ask the teachers to read a book a day to their class. The following week, our volunteer reader asks the children which book was their favorite. Together, they re-read the book and Ready Readers donates that book to the classroom.

Ready Readers offers state-approved, professional development workshops for teachers who participate in our program. Workshops are held in locations throughout the region, including St. Louis Community College, early childhood centers, and United 4 Children in Normandy.

Developing a cultureOF CLASSROOM READING

This year’s 3-credit-hour workshops include:

The Magic of Turning Favorite Read-Alouds into Curriculum Participants learn how to use interactive read-alouds to motivate young learners through classroom-proven ideas that engage emerging readers and develop their listening, comprehension and literacy skills.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in MY classroom? YES! This hands-on, interactive program offers tips for tapping into children’s curiosity about the living world through investigation, active learning and asking questions.

You'll find Ready Readers volunteers in classrooms

all around St. Louis — including one in our new office! Our meeting space

is ideal for workshops, café sessions and more.

A CLASSROOM OF OUR

OWN

Our Book-A-Day pilot proved a

success. In 2016-2017, we’ll add

two more centers to the program.

CENTERS

Book-A-Day started in two classrooms at two centers: Training Up A Child 2 and God’s Creation. The program ran for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the spring, building each classroom’s library by an additional 20 books! What’s more, at the end of the program, each child selected five favorites to take home for themselves — an additional gift from Ready Readers to encourage summer reading.

Filling the shelves — with a little help from our friends

Many individuals and organizations collected books for Ready Readers this year. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to donate 134 boxes of new and gently used books to classrooms across 66 early childhood centers. In addition, four classrooms received wooden bookcases through our Eagle Scout Shelf Building collaboration. Amazing!

More field trips to The Magic House

This year, Ready Readers distributed more than 10,000 new, personalized copies of The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle. To extend the story outside the classroom, 5,500 Ready Readers children, teachers and families participated in free, literacy-based, Eric Carle-themed field trips at The Magic House.

NEW! Storytime Science with Ready Readers

Now on the main stage at the St. Louis Science Center: Ready Readers! Stop by any Wednesday or Thursday at 10:15 a.m. to hear books and engage in activities about dinosaurs, robots, space, ocean life and more. Two additional themes, “animals on the farm” and “growing plants and flowers,” are planned in coordination with the center’s new GROW exhibit.

NEW! Book reviews in Ladue News

We are excited to share our favorite reads for kids in our new monthly column in Ladue News. The reviews allow us to shine a spotlight on high-quality children’s literature, as well as the wonderful work of our volunteers in the community.

Outside the classroom, we found additional opportunities to share the joy and importance of everyday reading with families. Ready Readers gave away 215 boxes of new and gently used books at more than 21 festivals and school programs throughout our community.

Normandy Read With Me!

This year, Ready Readers teamed up with Beyond Housing, Citi and the Normandy Schools Collaborative to launch a new initiative: Normandy Read with Me! The program creates reading nooks in businesses and community centers throughout Normandy to get books into the hands of more young readers. Signs around the community indicate participating locations. Ready Readers donated 85 boxes of books to help fill the shelves.

University City Public Library Challenge

In collaboration with the University City Public Library, volunteer readers in our University City classrooms talked with children, teachers and families about the library’s incredible resources. They challenged families to obtain a fine-free First Library Card for kids ages 6 and under — and more than 100 families did! The four classrooms with the most participants received a copy of Lola Goes to the Library for each child, plus a storytime session at the library, and a bucket full of classroom games, courtesy of Peaceable Kingdom.

St. Louis Air Show

Ready Readers hosted a booth at the ever-popular St. Louis Air Show, May 14-15, 2016. More than 10,000 people attended, and those who visited our booth enjoyed fun, hands-on STEM literacy activities.

As an organization, we are truly blessed to have the backing of a strong group of volunteers, teachers and donors. It is through your tireless support that we are able to reach more children with literacy programs each year. We are proud to partner with you to continue “Expanding Programs, Expanding Minds.”

Literacy Society members are those who give an annual individual gift of $1,000 or more to Ready Readers. During the 2015 calendar year, dozens of donors joined the society, and their gifts were generously matched by an anonymous benefactor. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you!

Early Educators Appreciation Event

In May, we hosted our Second Annual Early Educators Appreciation Event at The Magic House. Together with our partners and sponsors — ARCHS, ChildCare Aware of Eastern Missouri, the LUME Institute, Project Launch, Grace Hill, Youth in Need, TEACH Missouri Scholarship, United4Children, PNC Bank and The Magic House — we celebrated the amazing work of 200 early childhood educators working in low-income communities in the St. Louis area. Twelve teachers, nominated by their Ready Readers volunteers, were specially honored at the event.

Volunteer Appreciation Event

More than 90 Ready Readers volunteers, board members and staff gathered in our new Ready Readers training room to celebrate the successes of the past year. We gratefully acknowledged everyone’s hard work and dedication and took time to honor a few of our outstanding contributors.
