GPS+EGNOS based tracking & tracing services
for freight transport - operations case GPS+EGNOS
Case GPS+EGNOS (inside EGNOS’s service coverage area):
• Positions corrected (more accurate information)
• HPL «Horizontal Protection Level» providing a guarantee of the position (more
reliable information)
MELAHA International Conference and Exhibition, Alexandria (Egypt), September 2014 15
GPS+EGNOS based tracking & tracing services
for freight transport - operations case GPS-only
Case GPS-only (outside EGNOS’s service coverage area):
• Positions not corrected
• HPL «Horizontal Protection Level» not available
MELAHA International Conference and Exhibition, Alexandria (Egypt), September 2014 16
GPS+EGNOS based tracking & tracing services
for freight transport - LCS (1)• Navigation solution enabling using EDAS and provision of services based on it
• A “plug-in” solution for an easy retrofitting of existing GPS systems to use EDAS
• Provided services: a more accurate position with respect to that measured through
GPS and an information enabling to qualify/guarantee it (“protection level”)
• Consisting of a set of SW modules running on a server, connected to EDAS to get
EGNOS data and providing commercial services exploiting EGNOS features into
added value
• Optimised for ITS, road, freight transport and logistics applications

Performance analysis/comparison between GPS-only and GPS+EDAS via LCS (case Europe):
Values (in meters) of the horizontal and vertical Distance Root-Mean-Square (DRMS - root mean
square of the distances from the average 3D position to the observed positions obtained from a
number of trials)

EGNOS added value and benefits
• EGNOS corrections enabling to improve the GPS position accuracy
• EGNOS integrity information on the quality of the signals of the GPS, enabling to
obtain the Horizontal Protection Level (HPL), being a measure of the level of
confidence of the position calculated by using the GPS signals
Added value:
• More precise and qualified/guaranteed positioning
• Trustable and reliable localization and monitoring
• Robust asset tracking
Benefits:
• Supporting safety and security, and quality contracts
• Facilitation of customs procedures

Today’s status
MELAHA International Conference and Exhibition, Alexandria (Egypt), September 2014 21
Lessons learnt and outlook (1)
− EGNOS and Galileo can provide benefits not only to European countries.
− Added value/benefits are generated by the use of EGNOS OS and EDAS.
− EGNOS enables reliable positioning for robust tracking and tracing services, and
tomorrow with Galileo in a multiconstellation scenario.
− Products and solutions are ready and available, and used in Europe.
− EGNOS use in ITS for freight and road transport applications can be an important
support for the international trade around the Mediterranean basin, and a very
efficient enabler of the “single window” and “e-freight” concepts as well as of
other regional and neighbourhood policies, like those envisaged by the Regional
Transport Action Plan (RTAP).
− EGNOS service coverage extension to guarantee in the Euromed region the same
EGNOS performance in Europe is a fundamental enabler.
− Meanwhile the Euromed countries can launch initiatives, on a national or on a
regional basis, to take full advantage of the early services offered by EGNOS
today.
MELAHA International Conference and Exhibition, Alexandria (Egypt), September 2014 22
− MEDUSA’s Jordan “case study”, understood as a proof of concept, can stimulate
and trigger the development of national and regional initiatives, in the form of
research projects, new ITS adoptions and transport policies development.
− MEDUSA’s role is to give the opportunity to the Euromed countries to share
European experiences and have advices and guidance to implement their own
activities.
− Key date 21 October 2014: regional event open to the freight transport
community (in Amman)
