Concurrent Enrollment: High school students enroll in college courses either at a secondary location or at a community college. Instructors must be qualified to teach at a community college and students must meet the pre-requisite qualifications for each course.
Dual Enrollment: High school students complete a college course on their high school campus. Instructors do not need to be qualified to teach at a postsecondary institution and classrooms can be mixed with students taking the course for college credit or high school credit. Dual enrollment courses may be offered through an outreach office on a university campus.
CE v. DE?
• CE/DE students are college students- FERPA
"If the student is under 18, the parents still retain the rights under FERPA at the high school and may inspect and review any records sent by the postsecondary institution to the high school. Additionally, the postsecondary institution may disclose personally identifiable information from the student’s education records to the parents, without the consent of the eligible student, if the student is a dependent for tax purposes under the IRS rules.”
• Students cannot use government financial aid- FY 2017 FERPA Pilot with 44 institutions
• An increased likelihood of enrolling in college after high school
• A decreased need for remediation• Higher earned cumulative credit hours by the end of
students’ first-year, quicker degree completion • Higher first-year grade point averages • Higher first-year retention rates• Increased academic rigor• Flexible high school schedule• Saves money!
