0 INTRODUCTION

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is a general knowledgeorganization tool that is continuously revised to keep pace withknowledge. The system was conceived by Melvil Dewey in 1873 and firstpublished in 1876. The DDC is the most widely used classification systemin the world. featured in the national bibliographies of more than sixty countries. DDCis also used for other purposes such as a browsing mechanism forresources on the Web.1 Republic of India is a country in South Asia. It isthe seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous countrywith over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in theworld. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on thesouth-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borderswith Pakistan to the west China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; andBurma and Bangladesh to the east.2

1 NEED OF THE STUDY

DDC since its inception has undergone many sea changes in context ofgrowth and development, expansion and revision, relocation of newclasses and knowledge. But the need was felt since a long time forrevision and expansion of Area Tables particularly India and its statessimilar to USA and UK. India is considered the biggest democracy in theWorld and number one in the use of DDC in all types of libraries. Thepresent DDC-23 provides only the Area Table numbers of Indian states, but does not provide the Areas Table Numbers for districts. Hence, theIndian libraries face difficulty in assigning DDC area numbers at districtlevel. This expanded schedule not only provides the areas entries but alsohelps in revision of the Areas Table entries for future edition of DDC.

2 WHAT IS NEW IN THIS STUDY?

The latest DDC-23 only provides Area Tables of Indian states, whichare very inadequate in fulfilling the exhaustive need of the classification(geographical areas) particularly for Indian districts. Therefore, thisexpanded schedule will fill the gap of Indian districts entries. Theschedule contains more than seven hundred (700) entries pertaining to allIndian states, union territories and their districts. In addition, schedulealso provides number of places of religious, historical and tourists’significance such as Ajanta and Elora, Amarkantak, Amarnath,Bedhaghat, Bhilai, Bodh Gaya, Vrindavan, Dhariwal, Dwarka, Gangtok,Gulmargh, Kaziranga, Khajuraho, Konark, Mount Abu, Mussooriee,Ooty, Pahalgam, Sarnath, Shantiniketan, Shillong, Shirdi, Surajkund,Srirangapatnam, Tirupati, Vaishnodevi, etc.

3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objective is to expand the Area Tables of Indian states andits districts. In addition the study would serve the following specific
