SATURDAY CLASSES
• Accent Reduction I and II**
If you’d like to improve your communication skills by reducing your accent these helpful classes are for you. You’ll work on speech patterns, intonation, common problems areas, and more. You will first enroll in Accent I and continue on to Accent II (offered winter semester only).
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Second Language) Preparation Workshop** (Textbook provided)
Be well prepared to answer questions on the TOEFL iBT (internet based) exam. Gain confidence as you learn valuable test-taking strategies and review all required testing points, as well as hands-on experience with several in-class computer-based practice tests.
• NEW Civics for United States Citizenship*
Learn and practice the information and skills you will need to pass your naturalization test and interview. Prerequisites: 1) ESL Level III or above 2) Lawfully admitted permanent US resident 3) Plans to apply to become a naturalized citizen within the next six months.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE PLACEMENT TESTING
Required for correct level placement for ESL I–V classes as well as for ESL Speaking and Listening, ESL Reading, Writing & Vocabulary, and Civics for United States Citizenship.
If you are new to the English Language Institute at Schoolcraft College and you want to take one of these classes, you must take an ELI Placement test.
The ELI Placement test will determine exactly the class or classes that are best for you. You will be tested on your listening, comprehension, reading, grammar, writing and speaking abilities. Tests are free and take about two hours to complete. They are offered by appointment only. Several test dates are available approximately one month before classes start. You must make an appointment to take a test by calling 734-462-4436.
No testing will be available after classes start, so please plan ahead!
EVENING CLASSES• ESL (English as a Second Language) Levels I–V*
Our ESL Level I–V classes offer a well-rounded, integrated approach to learning English. Each level will help you improve your grammar, reading, vocabulary, writing, speaking and listening skills as you become more familiar with American culture. With each new class level, you will build on the skills you have acquired in earlier classes.

Choose the area of the English language on which you would most like to concentrate. Two levels are offered for each of these classes, beginner to intermediate and intermediate to advanced. Two separate classes of each level are offered per semester. You can enroll in either class without taking the previous session, offering you the flexibility your schedule may require.

The ELI courses are enrichment classes and are not for credit, however they can help you to:
• Improve your English skills so that you can gain admission to an American college or university.
• Expand your employment opportunities or be more at ease and productive in your job.
• Interact more easily and confidently with neighbors and friends.
Our classes provide ample time for practice, asking questions and getting to know your instructor and fellow students while you enjoy learning. Classes are kept small and the costs are reasonable.
