Exotic Animals
Jenny Ordonez and Gianna Maldari
The Issue…
• Should exotic animals be kept as pets?
• Some think…exotic animals are not meant to be caged and trapped with a civilian
• Others think…these innocent animals are good companionship for lonely people
AdvantagesGood for people
-Companionship for lonely people-animals give us emotional support
-They can be bred and sold for a lot of money
-It is extremely easy to obtain a wild pet-more than 1000 internet sites offer to sell them
-Owner can educate others about their exotic pet
Good for animals
-May save an injured animal-Could help an exotic animal that is near the bottom of the food chain and would surely get eaten out in the wild-Many species are at risk of population decline in the wild
Disadvantages
Bad for the animals-Exotic animals like monkeys,
or wild cats need a lot of space to move
-Being in a house or running around outside won’t cut it
-Owners might keep them caged or cut of claws, which takes away defense system
-Medicine is hard to find for these exotic animals and would not be able to go to vet
Bad for Humans -Illegal in most areas
-Get infected with diseases that most exotic animals are infected with like chlamydia, giardia, hepatitis A, rabies, ringworm-Impossible to meet animals needs
Our Opinion…• Keeping exotic animals as pets is dangerous for the animal and human-
these animals belong in their natural habitat
• Baby animals don’t stay cute and small forever, and many people release their pets into the wild once they decide they don’t want them anymore
• Wild animals can spread diseases such as herpes B, rabies, and Salmonella.
• People don’t realize that these animals require special care, so they end up depriving them of some of their basic needs
• Humans and animals are both at risk of getting hurt
