The purpose!• Exodus 8:10 And he said, “Tomorrow.” Moses

said, “Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God.

• Exodus 8:22 But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth.

• Exodus 9:14 For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself, and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth.

• Exodus 9:29 Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to the Lord. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is the Lord's.

• Exodus 10:2 and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, that you may know that I am the Lord.”

Syftet!• 2 Mos. 8:10 Han svarade: ”I morgon.”

• Three different Hebrew words used.

• Reject the tendency to combine together the different source content and subjects into one of two differing perspectives:

• either God has predicated Pharaoh’s actions

• or Pharaoh retains full free will.

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart

Fretheim, Terence. Exodus: Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching. Louisville, John Knox Press, 1991.

Page 7: Exodus 4: Miraculous SignsExodus+Sv-En.pdf · abandoned the quest for a date. •Some believe that the conquest was a matter of smaller groups of immigrants or a peasant revolt joined

• First, Fretheim points out that God’s hardening of the heart of Pharaoh’s servants in Ex 9:34 and 10:1 does not make them eternally resistant to influence, but rather they were able to recognize the dire situation and try to compel Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.

• Fretheim, 97.

Fretheim, Terence. Exodus: Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching. Louisville, John Knox Press, 1991.

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart

Page 8: Exodus 4: Miraculous SignsExodus+Sv-En.pdf · abandoned the quest for a date. •Some believe that the conquest was a matter of smaller groups of immigrants or a peasant revolt joined

• Secondly, in the succession of plagues, God becomes the source of hardening in the sixth plague (Ex 9:12).

• Fretheim states is not accidental as “Each refusal makes it easier for Pharaoh to refuse the next time” or “God … intensifies Pharaoh’s own obduracy.” Fretheim, 98.

Fretheim, Terence. Exodus: Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching. Louisville, John Knox Press, 1991.

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart

Page 9: Exodus 4: Miraculous SignsExodus+Sv-En.pdf · abandoned the quest for a date. •Some believe that the conquest was a matter of smaller groups of immigrants or a peasant revolt joined

• It is noticeable that after the earlier plagues, Pharaoh is said to have hardened his own heart, but after the later plagues God is said to have hardened Pharaoh's heart, as if to punish his original obstinacy with more obstinacy

• (Wenham 62).

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart

Page 10: Exodus 4: Miraculous SignsExodus+Sv-En.pdf · abandoned the quest for a date. •Some believe that the conquest was a matter of smaller groups of immigrants or a peasant revolt joined

• However, the text is clear that both the LORD and Pharaoh are sources for hardening.

• Ultimately: God’s sovereignty over a puppet would not be much of a statement!

Fretheim, Terence. Exodus: Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching. Louisville, John Knox Press, 1991.

The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart

• For most interpreters determining the date of the exodus has become more complicated than simply moving back 480 years from the building of the temple by Solomon (1 Kings 6).

• The same can be said for determining the length of the period of enslavement in Egypt.

• Genesis 15:13 mentions 400 years of oppression but speaks of returning to the land of Abraham's sojourning in four generations.

• The genealogy in Exodus 6:14-25 also works with a 4-generation structure. Ex 12:41 states 430 years.

• If 1 Kings 6:1 is the starting point, attempts are made to correlate the archaeological data in Palestine with a conquest 40 years after 1446 B.C.E.

• Proposed alignments have caveats and counter interpretations.

• The Merneptah Stela, dating from approximately 1210 B.C.E., mentions a group named Israel and it provides many interpreters with an anchor date leading to the conclusion that the mid-1200s is the likely date of the exodus.

• Some interpreters have abandoned the quest for a date.

• Some believe that the conquest was a matter of smaller groups of immigrants or a peasant revolt joined by a few groups from Egypt.

• In this view, there is no need to find a specific date for the exodus.

• The nature of the biblical narrative and the way the Bible's authority is understood influence these views on the date of the exodus.
