I. What is Idolatry ?

Leviticus 26:1 “Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.”

II. How did Idolatry Start ?

Men worshipped different thingsMen worshipped different things: Stones Animals Heavenly bodies Rivers gods and goddesses

Ceres = fruits of earth

Esculapius = god of medicine

Mercury = trade

Mars = wars and battles

Apollo = learning

Men trust in gods because they are ignorant of God’s power

Romans 1:21-25 describes process

IV. What must we do About Idolatry ?

“For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,”

“But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.”

Rev. 9:20

1 John 5:21 “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

1 Cor. 10:14 “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

Acts 17:16 “Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.”

“you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,” Exodus 20:5

Isa. 42:8 “I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.”

John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
