Replacement Heart Undergoes Medical HistoryTaken from the ABIOMED web site and webcast
on July 4 2001
Congestive heart failure is very high inour society Over 12 million to 1 millionnew cases of heart failure are reportedannually According to ABIOMED Incof those cases approximately 2000 peoplewill be able to receive a heart transplantper year ABIOMED Inc has designeda new artificial heart implant that iscreated with titanium and AngioflextradeABIOMEDrsquos proprietary plasticmaterials On July 4 2001 Drs Laman
Gray and Robert Dowling University of Louisville Surgeonsat the Jewish Hospital in Louisville KY performed the worldrsquosfirst implantable artificial heart procedure
According to the surgeons in an ABIOMED Inc webcast thesurgery is considered a celebration of medical science andhistory ABIOMED Inc began testing and experimenting withthe artificial heart over 5 years ago The FDA has permitted 5initial implants and will review each implant on a case-by-case basis for the allowance of future implants
As in any new surgical procedure the criteria set to receive theartificial heart is very high Patients for the study must havein-stage heart disease and basically no other options Thepatients cannot be accepted as a transplant candidate and theymust have an 80 chance of dying before 30 days withoutany conventional therapy The patient must meet all the setcriteria as well as test to see that the heart will fit properly

RTI International Metals and SP-700 Titanium AlloyMaking Rapid Gains in Sporting Goods Market
NILES OH- (BUSINESSWIRE) - June 19 2001 - RTIInternational Metals Inc(NYSERTI) through its largestsubsidiary RMI TitaniumCompany manufactures SP-700(TM) a new titanium alloydeveloped by NKK on a full-scale basis as a face material for
TaylorMade(R) Golf 300 Series(TM) drivers whichrecently went on sale in the golfing industry

TaylorMade has chosen to widely employ the product as aface material for its 300 Series drivers TaylorMade Golf300 Series drivers were the most widely used drivers overa 12-week period on the 2000 US PGA Tour accordingto a Darrell Survey report

Replacement Heart Continued (continued from page 1)
Prior to the surgery doctors and the medical team examineand note all aspects of the patientsrsquo anatomy A battery andcontroller are first inserted in the body followed by the heartFor this procedure doctors must be precise Once the artificialheart is in place surgeons de-air the implant and ensure allcomponents are working together properly
The ABIOMED Inc $75000 AbioCortrade ImplantableReplacement Heart consists of titanium and Angioflextradeplastic (seen below) The titanium was selected in the designapplication due to its resistance to rejection The body doesnot view the titanium or plastics as foreign tissues so norejection is seen Another benefit of using the chosen materialsis that special drugs are not necessary as they would be in acommon heart transplant Titanium was selected since it hasbeen used throughout the body and there has been minimalrejection
The AbioCortrade Implantable Replacement Heart device isuniquely designed so that blood is alternatively pumped fromone side to the other As quoted from ABIOMED Incrsquos websiteldquoThe AbioCor consists of an internal thoracic unit an internalrechargeable battery an internal miniaturized electronicspackage and an external battery pack
The thoracic unit of the first generationAbioCor weighing approximately twopounds includes two artificial ventricleswith their corresponding valves and a motor-driven hydraulic pumping system Theimplantable electronics package monitorsand controls the pumping speed of the heart
based on the physiologic need of the patient The AbioCoroperates on both internal and external lithium batteries Theinternally implanted battery is continually recharged from anexternal console or from a basic patient-carried external batterypack This is achieved with an energy transfer device calledTET (Transcutaneous Energy Transmission) The TET systemconsists of a set of coils one internal and one external whichtransmits power across the skin without piercing the surfacerdquo
Battery expectancy is one hour for each pound of batteries inuse Because this is an experimental operation surgeonsexpect the patient to eventually continue to perform routineactivities such as showering walking or going to the storeThis is all based upon the patientrsquos condition prior to theoperation As in experimental science nothing is written instone and can take time to develop
The intent of the artificial heart is to allow a patient to prolonglife It was stated that over 100000+ people could essentiallybenefit from this type of procedure ABIOMED Inc statedthat if the patients can survive sixty days or more they willseek approval from the FDA to continue the implantsSurgeons are realistic and concerned that survival rates maybe difficult to achieve based on the patientrsquos prior conditionas well as the stress of the surgery Patients as well as theirfamilies are the hospitals main concern

Titanium Heads Out to the Deep Sea Oil FieldsSited from TITANIUM NEWSSuisman Titanium Corporation
Oil companies are giving titanium serious consideration inthe construction of oil platforms because as offshore wellsget deeper weight and strength become more crucial Somewells are already more than four miles deep giving newmeaning to the term ldquooff shorerdquo
Conoco was the first company to use titanium in the risers ofits Heidrun platform built in 1995 in the Norwegian SeaOther companies are watching the Heidrun platform carefullyto see how titanium performs paying particular attention toany problems with flexibility One possible solution wouldbe to use a combination of steel and titanium
Because it is non-corrosive titanium is right at home in theocean Salt water has no effect on it It has been used foreverything from the hulls of Russian submarines to permanentseafloor observatories built of titanium junction boxesconnected to telephone cable All the deep sea submersiblesin the world including the Alvin are built of titanium becauseof its ability to withstand great pressure The Alvin can takeits human crew safely to a depth of 38 miles
Titanium has also been usedsuccessfully in oceanic geothermaloperations While its initial cost is muchhigher than steel its operating andmaintenance costs are far lower Steelpipes must be replaced once a year onaverage because the hot brine eats themaway but titanium pipes donrsquot have tobe replaced

NKKrsquos SP-700 titanium alloy represents a significantimprovement over conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloy in termsof formability strength and heat-treatment properties Itachieves reliable stable performance allowing use invarious parts that require high durability and light weightBased on its high strength combined with superiorformability demand for SP-700 titanium is expandingrapidly for such applications as golf club headswristwatches mountaineering crampons and tools
TaylorMade has chosen to widely employ the product as aface material for its 300 Series drivers TaylorMade Golf300 Series drivers were the most widely used drivers overa 12-week period on the 2000 US PGA Tour accordingto a Darrell Survey report
Todayrsquos larger golf club heads require thin faces andtherefore substantially more durable face materials SP-700 titanium provides manufacturers with excellent metalfatigue strength which is one of the reasons for its selectionby TaylorMade Golf 300 Series NKKrsquos advanced alloydesign and quality control technology combined with timelydelivery assurance that fully satisfy customer needs havealso been key factors in the materialrsquos success

The surgery and conference web cast can be viewed atwwwabiomedcom wwwheartpioneerscom andwwwjewishhospitalorg Media representatives can also call(reference Jewish Hospital or Abiocor) 1-800-937-6563
