Exhibition Road Building Project New courtyard, entrance and exhibition galleries Local area newsletter Issue 2, November 2012 The new courtyard on Exhibition Road V&A FUTUREPLAN: NEW COURTYARD, ENTRANCE AND EXHIBITION GALLERY The Victoria and Albert Museum is planning to develop a new courtyard, entrance and exhibition galleries on the Exhibition Road side of the building. This is the next stage in our ambitious FuturePlan programme, where we are creating beautiful and contemporary new settings for the Museum’s outstanding collections while restoring much of the building’s historic Victorian architecture and improving our visitors’ experience. The Exhibition Road Building Project will provide a large, underground exhibition gallery which will transform the way we deliver our internationally renowned exhibitions. At street level, in what is currently an unused area, we will create an open courtyard and an improved entrance into the Museum. This will all be set within the beautiful historical facades on the west side of the V&A’s Grade 1 listed buildings, which have never before been on public view. PLANNING PERMISSON GRANTED FROM THE ROYAL BOROUGH OF KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA The Exhibition Road Building Project was considered by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s Major Planning Committee in July, and we are pleased to announce that RBKC granted planning permission to the project. Committee members were agreed that AL_A’s design is an elegant and beautiful scheme which will serve the V&A and the local area very well in the future. FIRST WORK ON SITE The first phase of the Exhibition Road project will commence in November 2012 with preparation work, including the re-routing of services which run through the site. In order to allow necessary access for building works and the main construction phase, we have closed the Schools & Groups Entrance on the Exhibition Road side of the building and will erect a hoarding in front of the entrance. To allow for site access and construction works, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea have removed three trees in front of this entrance, to be replaced by four semi-mature trees after the project is complete.

The new courtyard on Exhibition Road

V&A FUTUREPLAN: NEW COURTYARD, ENTRANCE AND EXHIBITION GALLERY

The Victoria and Albert Museum is planning to develop a new courtyard, entrance and exhibition galleries on the Exhibition Road side of the building. This is the next stage in our ambitious FuturePlan programme, where we are creating beautiful and contemporary new settings for the Museum’s outstanding collections while restoring much of the building’s historic Victorian architecture and improving our visitors’ experience.

IMPACTWe do not anticipate that these works

will be disruptive to the local area. If you are visiting the V&A, your route into the Museum may be affected as we have closed the current Schools & Groups Entrance – signage and maps will be updated to reflect this. If you have any concerns about disruption over the next few months, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] STEPS

After completion of the first phase of site preparation, we will be progressing the detailed design of the scheme and appointing a contractor for the main construction phase. We expect the main construction work to commence in mid 2013.

KEEPING YOU UPDATED As the project progresses, we will

be issuing regular newsletters to keep everybody who lives, works and studies in the local area updated.

If you have any questions, comments, or would like to know how you can support the project, please email us at [email protected]
