The NEXT project aimed to bring the European production machinery industry to new frontiers by designing the next generation of machine tools. Six demonstrators and five prototypes were developed in this project, including the Par2 robot which will be presented at our stand.

Par2 is the fastest 2 degree-of-freedom robot in the world for pick and place applications. The field of application of this type of robots is very broad and spans various sectors in great need of automation, like food and agriculture. The production of this robot involved two European partners, Tecnalia and LIRMM.

39. SFWA - Creating the next generation of eco-friendly aero-structures

For the next generation aircraft, higher laminar performance is considered to be one of the key elements to reduce air resistance, increase overall performances and reduce CO² emissions. In the SFWA project within Clean Sky, the EU research programme for the greening of aeronautics, an Airbus A340-300 will be fitted with new outer wing sections to demonstrate an entirely new designed natural laminar flow wing. In the project, Aernnova has developed a monitoring system, PAMELA SHM™, that detects in real time damages and defects on such wings, reducing manufacturing and maintenance costs.

40. MyOcean - Your Ocean on-line

MyOcean provides state-of-the-art information available on global and European seas and their assimilation into 3D models in the past, real time and the near future. This unique service under the European Earth monitoring programme GMES is useful for water quality monitoring, environmental impact assessment, pollution control, oil spill combats, protection of living marine resources, thermal water energy conversion or for coastal erosion prediction. Visitors will be able to manipulate an interactive globe featuring currents or temperature and discover the first MyOcean smartphone application prototype displaying ocean forecast from its bottom to its surface.

41. OCTOPUS - A New Generation of High Dexterity Soft-bodied Octopus-inspired Robots

OCTOPUS studies the principles that give rise to the octopus sensory-motor abilities to define novel design principles and technologies for soft-bodied robots. The project could have implications in several fields such as underwater rescue or marine exploration, surgery.

The exhibit shows the most original results for new soft robotic technologies and biological research, with soft robot prototypes demonstrating the strategies of the dexterous movements of octopus body and arms. Visitors can interact with the soft arms of the octopus-like robot in a water tank.

42. ShipArrestor - Stopping drifting ships from turning into disasters

How do you prevent a drifting tanker or other disabled vessel from ending up on a beach or offshore oilrig? By using a new tool developed for the emergency services - the ShipArrestor. In case of engine failure, fire or similar incident a large tanker will quickly start drifting sideways rolling violently in the process. This tool is 100% helicopter applied and consists of a chain lasso for connecting to the anchor. A demonstration of a real life situation using video, photos and interactive displays at the exhibition will highlight the achievement of designing and constructing a tool for these scenarios.

43. FORBIOPLAST - Bio-based products from forest resources

FORBIOPLAST aims to valorise renewable forest resources. For example, thanks to an innovative sustainable synthetic process, wood and paper mill by-products can be used as raw materials for the production of polyurethane foams, saving energy consumption and avoiding the use of petro-derived materials. The stand will present prototypes based on biodegradable and recycled polymers with wood fibres, as well as rigid and soft polyurethane foams derived from wood by-products, including materials for automotive interior parts (T-bone, spoiler), packaging (trays, containers) and agriculture (tomato yarn, pots, fertilizers).

44. SELFDOTT - Sustainable Tuna Aquaculture – New Horizons

SELFDOTT consists of an international consortium of 13 European partners whose aim has been to breed Bluefin tuna in captivity and provide the basis for future ecologically sustainable aquaculture of this threatened species. The exhibition shows the new technologies and techniques developed to harness the reproduction of this species and monitor fish in captivity.

Visitors will be presented with in-situ monitoring shown together with diver assisted fish sampling and treatments, as well as live demonstrations of equipment together with video and underwater views of live tuna fingerlings.

45. GreenBottle - Planet Friendly Packaging

GreenBottle is a new type of liquid packaging that is designed as an environmentally superior alternative to plastic bottles and laminated cartons. The exhibition will display the evolution of the bottle from concept to current on shelf design, as well as the product flexibility in terms of different permutations of developed bottles. It will also show how the product has been successfully marketed to consumers, and how these have been educated in use and end disposal of it.

Visitors will see a video of our first of its kind technology which has automated the assembly of the new bottles.

46. E-Swarm - Swarms of cooperating robots

Swarmanoid is a heterogeneous swarm robotics system composed of three different robot types: foot-bots, hand-bots and eye-bots. The project was initially developed thanks to a FET Open project and is currently being further developed thanks to the ERC Advanced Grant E-SWARM.

At our stand, we will show the three prototypes and present some live demos of the foot-bots exhibiting collective behaviours that exploit self-organizing principles. Additionally, there will be videos that show our heterogeneous swarm acting in complex scenarios.

47. ALMA Enhancement - State-of-the-Art Receiver for ALMA, the World’s Largest Radio Telescope

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is the most powerful radio telescope for observing the Universe. With the Band 5 receiver, developed and produced in Europe thanks to FP6, ALMA will study a wide range of phenomena from observing objects from the earliest days of the Universe to the Solar system planetary studies, gaining deeper knowledge of the Earth's climate changes. ALMA has and will continue to create new jobs in European industry. It will operate as an observatory located on the Chajnantor plateau at 5000 meters altitude in Chile.

At our stand, we will present the ALMA observatory and exhibit a Band 5 receiver.

48. EuCARD - Novel accelerators for our future

A new type of particle accelerator has been developed and demonstrated for the first time. Named ‘EMMA’, the ‘Electron Model for Many Applications’ is a prototype electron accelerator, which is now operating in the UK. Due to its unique advantages, this type of accelerator could solve a number of the big challenges identified in the Innovation Union, in particular in the areas of healthy aging, energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Come to our stand to learn how EMMA works, see a real section of the accelerator and discover how it might improve our lives in the future.
