Friday 7th February
Steers to £1275 Heifers to £1125 Store cattle every bit as dear as they were throughout January with another large company of buyers ensuring a flying
trade for those on offer even though we did not see the quality sorts as of previous weeks. That being said store steers
did top at a very decent £1275 given for a strong Aberdeen Angus (23m) from Rhys Widger of Aveton Gifford whilst
another single Charolais bullock (22m) from Messrs Hawkins of Thorverton was close at £1250. More well farmed South
Devon steers (22m) easily sold to £1190 for John Hamlin of Ashburton with Stabilisers (19m) to £1160 for Will Coleman
of Lapford and Salers steers (17m) drawing £1090 for Steve Simmons and Family of Romansleigh. No really forward British
Blue steers on offer although smart ‘turning out’ type Blues (20-22m) reached £1075 for Paul Hendy of Aveton Gifford,
£1070 for Rhys Widger and a cracking trio from April Hayden of South Pool eased to £1055 apiece. Simmental steers
(21m) to £1070 for Rhys Widger again with best yearling store steers to £950 for three quality suckler bred Charolais
from Paul Burrow of Ottery st Mary. Three well covered South Devon heifers (22m) from JP Matthews & Son up from
Torpoint headed that section at a creditable £1125 apiece whilst eye catching bunches of Limousin cross heifers (22m)
saw £1085 and £1000 for Gary Dunn of Okehampton. British Blue heifers saw a couple of super ones (22m) reach £1050
a head for Messrs Hawkins of Thorverton once more with others of note to £1035 for April Hayden. Simmental heifers
(23m) saw £890 for Rob Summers of Harcombe, Sidmouth followed by groups of Saler females (20m) from Bruce Ellett
of Exmouth which took home £835 a life. Later born Charolais heifers (13m) from Paul Burrow looked good money at £945 apiece.
A extremely short entry of sixty seven Stirks & Suckled Calves met another good trade with the best topping at £800 for
W Tonkin & Son down from Cheriton Fitzpaine showing Charolais cross steers (11m), John Shears of Chagford travelled
across from Chagford and met a tremendous trade with Limousin cross steers (8m) achieving £670. South Devon steers
from R Weeks & Son of Exeter hit £660 with Angus steers from Horton Bros of Newton Abbot achieved £590 (10m)
whilst Simmental steers off the same good farm achieved £545. Heifers topped at £570 for R Weeks & Son for South Devons (12m) whilst Limousin cross heifers from John Shears obtained £495.

£290 & £285 for Ashley & Jess Bond of Honiton,
£290 for Mike Hooper of Spreyton and £285 x 2
& £280 for Mr DW Rowe of Axminster. Charolais

£162 for Martin & Liz Bennett. Hereford bulls to

The largest entry of orphan lambs so far this year got the day off to a great start with regular bulk consignors Parsonage
Farms of Chulmleigh selling young Suffolk cross ewe lambs at £29 (x11) and £26 (x7) as well as wether lambs of the same
breed and age at £20 (x10) and £18 (x11). Also at £26 were both Barry Mildon and family of Cadbury and John Ball of
Stoke Gabriel, Ken Luscombe of South Milton sold a pair at £23 and numerous vendors saw their best make £22. Smaller lambs from £10 to £16 to give an average of almost £19.
Just over 1300 store hoggs were an immense trade from start to finish with 35 pens over £100 to a top of £118.50,
£117.50 (x2), £117, £115.50, £112.50 & £109.50 for meated sorts from Collier Bros of Uplyme who also had framed
keeping hoggs over the £100 mark. Further pens of strength at £114.50 for D & DJ Cooke of Yarnscombe, £112.50 &
£107 for Bonner Farms of Burrington, £111 & £110 for the Winzer family of Lixton, Loddiswell, £109.50 for AJ Henson
of Cadbury and £105 for both Nicky Cleave of Bratton Fleming and Ranjit Farming of Ipplepen. Short keep hoggs generally
£94 to £104 but some of these three figure hoggs will still be alive in a month’s time, they’re not all fit or nearly fit! Tidy
farming sorts upwards from £86 with some of the early £80 hoggs looking very dear pence per kilo. Good framed hill
hoggs in demand and selling to £83 for Scotch hoggs from Courtney and Phillip Heard of Meldon, Okehampton. Virtually
nothing less than £67 other than a few very small sorts and a few pens of stiffs, but despite this the 1361 Hoggs all in, averaged £87.88!
A tidy line up of grazers sold to £97.50 for a mixed pen of Suffolk x and Mule ewes from Friend & Reeve of Sandford
closely followed by a pen of the same description at £89.50 for M Palfrey of Sandford and Texel x ewes at £86.50 for Temuka Ltd of Meshaw. All sorts in strong demand and not looking much different to our Monday trade.
In-lamb ewes looked the value of the day against all other fiery trades. That said John Jordan and family of Chagford were
delighted when their FM Scotch Mule ewes scanned with just over 200% flew to £166 (x2) and a further pen made £140.
Some great Suffolk cross Mule flock aged ewes from Barry Elston of South Molton sold to £139 (x2) and £135 (x4) and
the best of the flock dispersal from Nick Lee and family of Shobrooke sold to £134 for Texel x Mule shearlings, £131 (x2),
£128 (x2) for Lleyn cross shearlings & £126 (x3) for both shearlings and mixed aged ewes whilst the rest of their well
farmed run were from £108 to £120. Martin & Sarah Littlejohn of Meldon, Okehampton sold their best young ewes to
£126 as well as older ewes at £118. Older unscanned Mule ewes at £114 for Graham Hill of Wiggaton, April lambing
Masham ewe hoggs to £116 and NC Mules to £115 & £114 all from Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick and Ross
Skelley travelled up from Shaugh Prior to sell his 6T Romneys to £104 (x3). Anthony Tucker of Kingsnympton sold his
Whitefaced Dartmoors well at £80 (x2) and the Sage family of Sidmouth sold single bearing Easycare ewes to £71 (x2). A run of empty Texel cross Mule ewe hoggs sold at £114 again for Barry Elston. Breeders averaged £114.83.
Quality and quantity yet again, and a trade to match! Just shy of 400 lives were another sensational trade with first time
vendors the Cowling family of Wheddon cross selling 11 Suffolk x Mule 6T-FM doubles at £258 (£86/life) as well as topping
the singles with 9 ewes of the same comments at £168 (£84/life). More doubles at £235 for both Rich Berry of Kenn and
Gareth Hutchings of Launceston with both lots being Suffolk cross ewes but only young lambs as Robert Rogers of Totnes
made £230 of similar and Barry Mildon of Cadbury achieved £220 with his Dorset FM’s. Too many doubles to mention
selling from £200 to £212 and only a few very small or indifferently bred doubles less than £180 (£60/life). Singles generally
£135 to £150 with the nest top price behind the Cowlings at £165 for Chris & Alison Crudge of Morebath, £156 for
Robert Rogers, £155 for Alan & Gerry Luscombe of Bickington and £150 for Ivor & Rene Alexander of Tiverton. Couples
averaged £166 an outfit (back £9) or £68.94 per life (back £2.40).

A bigger entry sold to a fantastic trade with the best hitting £232 on behalf of Rob Smith of Launceston with Nigel & Sandra
Tope of Blackawton, Totnes also at £232. Tim & Rupert Stockwell travelled up from Kingsbridge and hit £230 with
Andrew Freemantle of Kenniford seeing his best reach £226 (241kg). Richard and Rob Overnell came down from
Torrington with eight sows and topped at £218 on a day where the top twenty sows averaged £197.30.
Good numbers sold to a more difficult trade with two buyers missing reporting slow retail prices this week. That said,
the four buyers present took the heavyweights to £148 for Kenniford Farm with others at £146 for Richard Knox. A nice
run of 10 (x 94kgs) pigs topped at £107 for Tim Stockwell with the best pen of 86kg pigs at £104 (x5) for Messrs Turner
of Exmoor. Messrs Smith of St Giles sold a team of eight at £100 with the best lightweights at £69 for ten Gloucestershire
Old Spot X pigs (63kgs) at £73 for Messrs Cunningham of Axminster selling at Exeter for the very first time. Just a handful
of young stores topped at £42 for Messrs Jones of Great Pelean.
*Vendors please note* We must ensure that only pigs with slapmarks or ear tags are allowed in the auction. We will have

As 2019 comes and goes, we now enter a new decade with at least a bit of certainty in which direction the country is heading. As I write this rural reflection, we are into our second day back in the offices and although the markets didn’t shut for us up here at Exeter, the Christmas holidays seem long in the distance. It is always nice to get back into the formality and routine, that said the Christmas period is one of my favourites with catching up with friends, family, undertaking a bit of farming and going for a walk around with a gun under your arm. With regards to the livestock sector, we have seen a welcome lift in the sheep trade throughout Christmas with the finished product being a much wanted commodity, with store lambs following suit and in particular looking a good trade, both for store lambs and couples. With regards to the beef sector, unfortunately we haven’t seen much of a rise in the end product, that said our first January market here at Exeter can report a tremendous trade for both the stores and suckled calves forward. Hopefully this will prevail as we go through the final months of winter and into the spring. Further prices for the arable sector seem to be good and even today in the livestock market, I heard from one fellow client that straw is slowly creeping up. Both increases apparent due to the lack of drilling that has taken place throughout the autumn and winter. Having been around the countryside on many professional matters, those who braved the weather have benefited in places but the land that is of that heavy type and remains wet is perhaps looking somewhat it should be. Let’s hope for a dry period now which will enable those folks that haven’t been able to undertake the process of drilling, an opportunity to do so. I know at home the red soil has remained in situ since the beginning of October, with only the furrows levelling out weekly due to the harsh weather it has witnessed. As always, I hope that many of you have received your Basic Payment Scheme payment for the 2019 period, some confirmations have come through from clients and as always, there are those that have unfortunately not received such payments. In particular this is in relation to the moorland farms, whereby various checks are always undertaken on common rights. As always emphasised please do check your payments to ensure they are correct. Here at the Kivells office we are able to input the various hectares in which you are to claim upon and if you do have any moorland rights in which you claim, this will produce an estimated figure on the year. It is worth checking as you will be surprised on the amount of times missed payments have been forward. The Basic Payment Scheme payment process will soon be under way and again, it is imperative that you are as the claimant are set ready to go in undertaking that process, whether it is land parcels that need changing or the transferring of entitlements. Last autumn appeared to be a busy one with various land transactions and tenancy agreements being implemented and therefore we are now in the process of ensuring that these land parcels and entitlements are transferred across to the correct claimant ready to kick off the 2020 claim period. With regards to the Countryside Stewardship, this is again been of somewhat annoyance with the RPA getting back to us only on a few applications submitted back in 2019. Bearing in mind that those applications submitted have now started on January 1st 2020, there are still a number of applications on whereby we have not received the confirmation. On other matters it is pleasing to see that clients are interested in replacing the old ELS Entry Level Stewardship Scheme with the new Countryside Stewardship Scheme and other farmers that perhaps realise there is further beneficial income in relation to obtaining a Countryside Stewardship application for their holding together with the benefits of attaching various capital works. Kivells agents in the next couple of months will be out and about on farms, sitting around the kitchen table to discuss the potential creation of such Countryside Stewardship agreements and if you think this may be of benefit to your holding and in particular the way the business is managed, then please do get in touch. Over the past three or four years we have set up some tremendous schemes whereby farmers have been able to implement and roll out some schemes that not only benefit the farm income but also the wildlife as well. Having now completed the Christmas period, we phone has become busy in relation to a number of valuations. Here at Kivells we undertake valuations for a number of various matters whether it be for tax reasons, bank lending or personal requirements.
Rural Reflection January 2020
In the last couple of months, I have been involved in a number of compensation claims in relation to the firm Wales and West coming down and undertaking the renewal of various gas mains situated throughout the South West. These gas mains have been updated and consequently contractors for Wales and West have to come in and undertake the procedure of renewing such pipelines. It is often the case these contractors create reasonable damage to the land and whereby we are putting together claims to ensure that farmers and land owners are fairly reimbursed for the reinstatement that has to be undertaken to get that land back to its original state, together with any losses that are incurred, whether it be arable fields or pasture fields. It is often the case that land owners and farmers undertake such projects themselves but it is always a higher end value in relation to the reinstatement costs and compensation due if you sit down and put pen to paper. Our firm’s fees are always covered by the incoming utility company and we are able to advice and create the required claim, ensuring that all aspects are covered and you are fairly treated. If any utility company does enter your land, such as Wales and West, Western Power Distribution, National Grid or South West Water then please do get in touch.
Farm Tenancies in 2019 have been few and far between. 2020 has already proven to be a different story. Kivells have recently been instructed to let the Land and Buildings at Horridge Farm on a 5 year FBT from the 1st May 2020; a farm with a substantial sized building and approximately 45 acres of land surrounding. This will be an attractive opportunity for many. Kivells have also been instructed to let an agricultural property, land and buildings off market. For those that are currently looking for a farm to let, it is essential your interest is registered with the office. We believe 2020 could be a good year for farm lettings. Landlords are now considering their options for the short to medium term, in line with the news we have received from the RPA over the agricultural subsidies. If you wish to discuss the letting of your farm in 2020 or 2021 please get in touch.
Finally on a brief note, December saw our machinery sale here at Exeter Livestock Centre and it was pleasing to see such a crowd of people supporting the sale with a vast entry of machinery from JCB 13T Swing Shovel to a wonderful array of Massey Ferguson Tractors. It was pleasing to see that the Exeter Livestock Centre is following the success of the Holsworthy market in the forms of machinery sales. We hope to push forward with this bi-monthly fixture throughout 2020 and if you have any machinery which you are thinking to release and turn into cash, then please give myself a call. I would be delighted to come out on site and advise on values and list the benefits in bring such machinery to either the Holsworthy or Exeter Livestock Centre.
