A small show of cattle on offer at our mid festive market saw prime cattle rise to 195ppk for a well-covered 620kg British

Blue steer from Adrian Bowden of Drewsteignton which realised £1205 whilst an aged (14 year old) South Devon cross

barren cow from Alan Luscombe, Bickington reached 89ppk and £568 and a rangy 880kg Charolais cull bull from Michael

Vooght of Hennock drew 109ppk and grossed at £959.

A seasonal entry at our combined Prime & Store Market saw some decent calves forward and an excellent trade! Top of

the day was £348 for a smart young British Blue bull from Mr DW Rowe of Axminster who sold another at £345 and the

best of Blue heifers to £195. Charolais bulls to £215 for Andrew & Rose Retter of Honiton who also sold Charolais heifers

to £180 & £175. A good run of young Hereford calves from Mark Boundy of South Molton met keen interest with the best bulls to £185 and the best heifers to £130.

  • Prime Lambs to £110 & 254 ppk Cull Ewes to £142 & Rams to £117

Orphan Lambs to £46 Store Lambs to £108.50 Double Couples to £250 & Singles to £185

What a difference a week makes! Prime lamb vendors well were rewarded with their efforts this week with some looking

nearly £20 dearer on the week! Two pens took the top honours at

£110, firstly CTJ Ford of Chulmleigh with a single overweight and then

Richard Dare & family of Kilmington with smart 47kg lambs whilst

their overweights were next best at £108 and other overweight’s sold

to £105.50 for both Ben Cullen of Exeter and CTJ Ford. Ben Cullen

also sold 50kg Dorset lambs at £107.50, a price matched by Michael

& James Reddaway of Sampford Courtenay with 49kgs and some super

46kg lambs sold to £107 & £106.50 again for Richard Dare and

£105.50 for Tim & Amy Heywood of Rackenford. Martin Quick of

North Tawton achieved £107.50 with is smart 45kg Charollais crosses

and 239ppk, a price matched by Derek Balman of Arlington with 44kg

    Texel crosses at £105 as his 43kgs made £102.50 (238ppk) and 42kgs

£99.50 (237ppk). More 45kgs at £105 for Arthur Palmer of West

Alvington and £104.50 for Tim & Amy Heywood. Top price per kilo

came from Steve Huxter and family of Bridport with 34kgs at 254ppk

    (£86.50), as well as 33kgs at 241ppk (£79.50), 36kgs at 239ppk (£86)

and 37kgs at 238ppk (£88). Abels Bros of Tavistock saw their best hill

bred light lambs sell to 236ppk or £86 whilst their 32kg Scotch ram

lambs rose to £74 and 231ppk. SQQ was 40 pence better at 233ppk.

A sizable entry of 725 cull sheep were a varying trade throughout with some looking just as dear as previous weeks but

some looking £5- £10 apiece less on the recent trend, especially amongst some of the fatter sorts. A single Texel ewe topped at £142 for Gareth Hutchings of Launceston followed by a pair of the same breed at £125 for Messrs Gregory of

Buckfastleigh and £118 for a penful from The Rolle Texel Flock of Sidmouth. A trio of Charollais ewes sold to £119 for

Dylan Laws of Dawlish and Suffolk’s from East Devon exceeded expectations at £110.50. Plenty of crossbred ewes then

selling from £95 to £108. Mules seeing the best in the mid £80’s with the odd pen £88 and leaner sorts nearly all £70 plus.

Hill ewes no dearer and usually either side of £50 with weight and strength around the £60 mark. Tups to £117 for a pen

of six of Dorset’s from Marshay Farm Ltd of Pennymoor with other meated sorts from £80 to £109, the lean and lazy from £40 to £77 and all cull sheep averaged £77.

In the store section of the combined market the orphans flew with a top of £46 for a super pen of five, one month old

sorts from Adrian & Julie Rich of Halwell followed by two vendors at £30 and the other four made £28 giving an overall average of £36.55.

    Prime Lambs to £86 & 180ppk Cull Ewes to £90 & Rams to £99

    691 PRIME LAMBS

Another quiet Monday in the sheep pens with 691 prime lambs selling at recent levels with a top of £86 for Texel x

50kg lambs from David Goss of Littlehempston who also had 51kg Charollais at £83.50 and smart 47kg continentals at

£83 (177ppk). Overweights to £85 for AJ Carter of Dawlish and £81.50 for Paul West of Holbeton. Other 50-52kg

lambs selling at £85 for Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford £84.20 for Tony Pickard of South Molton, £82.80 for Ken

Chapple of Oakford and £82.50 for RD Middleton & Son of Ashreigney. A trio of smart 47kg Beltex crosses from

Tracey Pike of Luppit sold at £82.50 (176ppk). 45kg Charollais lambs to £77 for Len Sharland of Tiverton and the same

price per head for 44kgs from Keith Milton of Pennymoor who also claimed top price per kilo when his two pens of

smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg

Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

    £56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is

just a penny better at 170ppk.

    367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS

A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey

Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for

similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as

mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of

Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to

£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very

few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of

    trade.

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.

  • Similarly the 425 stores soared to a top of £108.50 for AL Nash of Hayle who had others at £101.50, a price matched by

Michael & James Reddaway of Sampford Courtnenay and WJ Ford of Chulmleigh made £101 of theirs. Short keep and

well-bred medium keep lambs all over £90 and other medium keep lambs usually mid £80’s with lesser sorts in the £70’s. Overall average £87.99 and that’s without too many killing lambs included as they were all sold in the prime section!

The Brexit deal has given these store lamb buyers yet another boost of confidence and their only concern now is the lack

of numbers coming forward. If you’ve lambs to sell please get in touch, put them in front of a number of serious buyers from across the Westcountry and further north, this trade doesn’t disappoint!

A consignment of Shetland’s saw pedigree flock aged ewes make £38.50 for Richard Quantick of Teigngrace.

A super entry of 92 ewes with their 133 lambs at foot were a slightly more selective trade in front of an increased audience

of buyers. With the weather far from helping and some big numbers having already come through at big money, there

seems slightly less enthusiasm in the trade than the previous few weeks. Top money today to market regular Alan Bickley

of Puddington with his FM Dorset doubles selling at £250, followed by more Dorset doubles from both Ben Cullen and

Chris Churchill of Axminster at £245 also James Barrow & family of Over Stowey saw their best Suffolk cross doubles sell

at £240. Majority of doubles from £185 to £230 with best of the singles to £185 for both Mr Nankervis of St Ives and

Adrian & Julie Rich and the general run of singles were £140 to £160. Overall averages of £185 per outfit (back £25 on last Friday) and £75.64 (£4 less).

  • RURAL REFLECTION DECEMBER 2020 Well suddenly we see ourselves in December and hopefully many of you will now have received your BPS payment!

Some farmers have also received their Countryside Stewardship payment alongside their Basic Payment which is an

added bonus. Looking back over the year, it has definitely been a different one with aspects nobody could have

planned for but over all of the Kivells office and departments, we continue to keep busy and we thank all of our

clients for their continued support whilst we work in a COVID secure way.

Having recently returned from maternity leave, it is good to be back in the office and get up to date with all of the on

goings and see many clients at market. Within the office we are seeing the Countryside Stewardship Applications

applied for back in the summer being approved, mainly the smaller ones at present but compared to previous years

we are seeing them come through a lot earlier. The Small Countryside Productivity Grants that were applied for back

at the beginning of November have also started to trickle in, which is looking promising and those businesses that

have been approved for a grant, have until 31st March 2021 to receive and pay for their items before making a claim.

The Agricultural Bill became Law on 11th November, which sets the scene for the 7 year agricultural transition period

between 2021 – 2027. This sees the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme, delinking of Direct Payments (BPS) and

the introduction of the New Environmental Management Scheme. DEFRA have outlined the key changes with the

    main aspects in 2021 being;

    1) The removal of greening rules – crop diversification, Ecological Focus Areas (EFA’s) and the permanent

grassland rules will no longer be relevant but this will not affect the overall payment received as the greening

money will instead be added to the BPS entitlement value.

    2) The first reductions to BPS – everyone will receive a reduction of 5% on their first £30,000 of payments with

bigger reductions on the higher payment bands.

    3) Start of a 3 year national pilot for the Environmental Land Management Scheme.

    4) Improvements to existing schemes - the Countryside Stewardship Scheme will continue to be available with the

last new applications being accepted in 2023. Anyone that has a Countryside Stewardship Agreement that starts

after January 2021, who gets offered a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, will be able to withdraw

and transfer to the new scheme with no penalty. Therefore anyone considering applying for a new Countryside

Stewardship agreement in 2021, it is worth looking to see what options are out there.

On the property side, we have seen a tremendous couple of months here at Exeter with a range of property types

seeing prices often achieving in excess of their guide prices. We have just completed on Higher Swannaton Farm

which included an extensive farmhouse, two well designed barn conversions, an extensive range of modern and

traditional agricultural outbuildings along with 57 acres of pasture land in a stunning location which saw a huge

amount of interest. We have also completed on the Land at Christow being a smaller acreage on the edge of

Dartmoor. We where we were inundated with interest and it sold well in excess of the guide prices. This shows the

huge demand for small pieces of land where people can own ‘a little piece of Devon’, something we have seen

increasingly popular since the first lockdown.

Following a very successful Autumn trading in the farm agency department, we have a number of blocks of land and

farms in the pipeline so please watch this space, and give the office a call to get registered so you are kept up to date

with any properties coming on the market. Likewise if you are interested in discussing the possibility of selling in the

spring, please do not hesitate to contact your local Kivells office a call and we would be more than happy to carry out

a market appraisal and discuss how we can help with marketing.

  • Weather wise, compared to the autumn of 2019; 2020 has been very kind to us with opportunities to get the winter

crops in and livestock staying out slightly later than they would have in 2019. Let’s hope this weather continues and

we do not have a long winter ahead.

As always, please give your local property and professional office a call if we can help with any matter and ‘we wish

you all a jolly Christmas but a jolly safe Christmas!’
