    Exercise after Stroke classes

Group based stroke rehabilitation classes take an active approach to improvingyour movement and independence. The classes are taken by instructors whohave specialist knowledge, to give stroke survivors the opportunity to exercisein a safe and enjoyable environment. The activities can be adapted to suit yourspecific needs. Carers have also told us they benefit from the classes as they

get the chance to have a break and meet other carers.

The Exercise after Stroke programme continually runs throughout the year andcan accommodate new stroke survivors into the classes at any time. Initiallythe instructor or co-ordinator will arrange to see you at the venue to conduct ascreening and assessment session and talk through how the programmeworks, and you will also have the opportunity to see a class in action.

Following this, you will then be able to access the class and participate on aweekly basis from then on. However, you will not be expected to do as muchas the other regular participants, this will be tailored and gradually increasedover your first 12 weeks while you progress is monitored. At the end of your

first 12 weeks, you will be assessed again and will be encouraged to eithercontinue with the class or you can choose to look at alternative form ofexercise, which may be the gym.
