Next Steps with Computers Exercise 11 Positive Mental Attitude Our conscious mind just keeps going round and round, perpetually spinning, like a spinning wheel. It is constantly doing two things only, no more, just two. Firstly, it is constantly learning. Unless you are brain dead. Your mind never ceases to "learn". By learning, I mean it is constantly receiving and processing inputs from the 5 senses - if you are not physically impaired then it will be hearing, touching, seeing, smelling, and tasting. For as long as you are in a normal state of consciousness, you cannot shut out these sensory inputs. Secondly, it is constantly deciding. Yes, making decisions. Every moment in your normal state of consciousness, you are making decisions about what you are sensing, how you want to process the information you are receiving through your senses, whether to believe what you see, what you hear, or disbelieve them. Everything you sense around you is a stimulus to your consciousness, and you cannot help but react to these stimuli. That is just what normal people do all day, reacting to stimuli. But there is something else that's interfering with all that learning and deciding. It filters what you learn, it affects how your mind processes information, and it influences your every decision. Your attitude Your attitude determines how you will learn, how you will process the inputs you receive from your senses. Your attitude determines whether you will like what you just heard, feel comfortable with what you are seeing, or enjoy the food you are tasting. Your attitude is one big filter to your learning process. Your brain's central processing unit ("CPU") works in harmony with your attitude. If your attitude tells you to accept what you are sensing, that acceptance becomes a kind of belief. If your attitude tells you to reject what you are sensing, that rejection becomes a disbelief. Believe it or not, your attitude has a say.
