5th grade Symbolism Self Portraits Create Type II Lesson Objectives: The students will learn about the art of Frida Kahlo and the symbolism she uses in her self portraits. The students will plan and create a self portrait using symbolism. The students will describe their choices in their self portrait. Visual Art Standard: Students will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas. The students were first introduced to the painting, The Two Fridas. They filled out a Venn diagram comparing the two Fridas in the painting. There was then a classroom discussion based in several artworks by Frida Kahlo, primarily discussing the types of symbolism she used in her artwork. After the discussion, the students were to plan a self portrait. They were asked to brainstorm things that they could include in their self portrait, such as something that could describe their personalities, what they enjoyed, or something important to them. In their sketch, they were required to at least use three of these items. Once they had a plan, they created their final self portrait. They were asked to write a paragraph or two describing their artwork, the choices they used for mediums, and a self critique. Visual Art Elementary Exemplar

Emerging CollectionSome symbols I put on my portrait are the CAPO sign it represents my friendship with Cayle, Paris, and Arielle. Another symbol is the 3 flowers they represent my 2 sisters, Mahogany (pink) Octavia (purple) and Zahria (blue). This symbol represents the love I have for my sisters. Another symbol that I used was cross earrings that represent my love for god and all that he has don for me. For my mediums I used watercolor pencils and watercolor paint for my portrait because I liked the colors that the watercolors had to offer. I like this self portrait because it represents some of the things that I love and care about a lot. Exemplar

Near the top right corner you can see a basketball goal that’s because I love basketball. I have a hood on my head to show my dad, because he did some bad stuff. I have a Romanian flag in the right corner because I am 60% Romanian. I was born in Texas so I have a Texas Flag. I have vampire teeth because my family was born in Transylvania. I chose sharpies because you can see them and I chose watercolor pencils because it’s faster that trying to color the whole thing with sharpies. Exemplar

Advanced Collection In my self portrait I have a lot of symbolism. First I drew a rainbow and lots of butterflies those represent me because I am a really happy person. I also drew lots of flowers, trees, and birds because I love nature. I put the sun shining even though there are storm clouds, which represents that happiness always finds a way. I drew a fox because that is my favorite animal. The book I am holding is called PAX which is my favorite book. I used watercolors. I used watercolors because they are my favorite type of paint. I am really good with watercolors and I use them a lot. I really like how my self portrait turned out. I think it represents me perfectly.
