celebrating

50 years!

We are here to serve you. Julianna Dial, Kimberly Kelly, Kim Chavis, & Trudy Chavis

LUMBERTON– On May 10, 2018, 62 private citizens, government officials and local businesses joined Robeson Health Care Corporation (RHCC) staff to celebrate the ground breaking of the new Lumberton Health Center.

Mayor Pro Tem, John Cantey,Jr., brought greetings from the city of Lumberton as he shared that “it was a great day for Lumberton”. Tim Hall, President and CEO of RHCC, echoed Mr. Cantey’s com-ments and shared that it was indeed a great day for RHCC and for the scores of patients that would call this new health center their medical home.

This new construction at 1309 E. 5th Street will serve as the new home to the already exist-ing Lumberton Health Center at 402. N. Pine Street in Lumberton. The new facility will provide more space for additional medi-cal providers and increased and improved services that are not currently possible due to space constraints at the Pine Street loca-tion.

The new Lumberton Health Center will house 4 medical providers, licensed behavioral health staff, in-house pharmacy offer-ing discounted medications, psychiatric services, HIV care and support, men’s treatment program and a dentist and hygienist that will provide

much needed oral health care to RHCC patients. Lumberton Health Center will continue to accept all insurances and offer a sliding fee program of

discounted medical services based upon household size and income.

RHCC received a $1,000,000 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to help offset the construction costs of the

12,600 square feet facility. First Bank has partnered with RHCC to finance the remaining portion of the construction of Lumberton Health Center. RHCC

is appreciative of its partnership with Locklear, Locklear and Jacobs, LLC Consulting Engineers who designed the structure and who are overseeing the construction of the project. RHCC is proud to have selected Chavis, Inc. as the contractor for this project. The estimated time of completion of this project is late 2018/early 2019.

RHCC is a private, not-for-profit organization with its own 11-member board of directors, 52% of which are patients of the corporation. RHCC has been operating in Robeson County since 1985 and has since spread into other counties. RHCC runs 7 feder-ally qualified health centers (FQHC) in Robeson, Columbus, Scotland and Montgomery Counties. In addition to the medical centers, RHCC operates 6 residential substance abuse treatment programs in Robeson, Pitt, Johnston and Moore counties. For more infor-mation on RHCC’s services, please contact Jennifer McLamb at (910) 521-2900.

Robeson County Relay For Life held their 24th year of fundraising for cancer research. The goal is to raise $150,000 for the American Cancer Society, which works to fi nd a cure for the nation’s No. 2 killer, with about 600,000 deaths each year in the United States. Lung, breast, and prostate cancer are the top killers.

Throughout the day different events were held, including a Survi-vor Dinner, a Survivor/Caregiver Walk, and a Luminaria Ceremony.

There was also entertainment through-out the day, as the fairgrounds was trans-formed into a mini-city, with dancing and per-formances from bands and vocalists.

Morgan Sills is the organizer of the American Cancer Society’s Robe-son County Relay For Life. At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, she was feeling pretty good about hitting the mark. Money will continue to come in well after the event ends today.

“I think we’ll be very close,” she said. “Probably

within $20,000.”Whatever is raised this year will add to almost

$2.7 million the event has already raised during its 24 years.

Sills pointed to the many people present to help reach the goal.

“We have between 800 and 1,000 people walk-ing as part of 46 teams,” Sills said. “We are encouraging people to walk all the time. It sym-bolizes that the battle doesn’t stop. That’s what survivors do.”

“We’re dedicated to supporting survivors and fi ghting against cancer,” said Alyssa Kardatzke, of the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society will use the money to support patient services, a cancer hotline at 1-800-227-2345, educational programs about the disease, research at top universities, and advocacy activities to keep government leaders focused on cancer.
