From the Zoo Director2004 was a year of progress as we completed two major projects in the master plan. Elephant Walk, a renovation of the elephant yard and associated public pathways, was opened in August to the delight of Zoo guests and the elephants. The new facility tripled the outside space available to Sujatha and Little Mac while making signifi cant improvements to the pathways that surround the exhibit. The $2.8 million exhibit

was designed to manage the two 34-year Zoo residents under protected contact, a system of care that always maintains a barrier between the zoo keepers and the elephants.

In September, Wings of Asia opened to the public. The exhibit was originally called the “Telephone-Pole Aviary” because the telephone poles that support the exhibit’s mesh barrier were donated and put in place by General Telephone in 1980. Though much work had been done to renovate certain aspects of the “pole aviary” in recent years, it was not until 2004 that a complete $390,000 renovation was initiated. The Alice Tweed Tuohy and Dr. Joseph & Helene Z. Pollock Foundations were primarily responsible for sponsoring the signifi cant improvements to this beautiful exhibit.

Though outside the 1999 master plan, we started the year with a complete renovation of the interior of Nocturnal Hall. In April, Eeeww! opened to the delight of youngsters as a collection of spiders, hissing cockroaches, snakes and frogs (among many other interesting creatures) found a new home at the Zoo. Plans for 2005 include the addition of a large snake (12+ feet long) to Eeeww! The $250,000 exhibit was made possible by an anonymous donor.

Throughout 2004 Zoo staff worked to complete a parking and traffi c study as part of the City’s review process for the remaining master plan projects: Discovery Pavilion, Condor Country, The Wave (a hilltop restaurant facility with restrooms), a new tiger exhibit, and renovation of the service yard.

All of these wonderful changes have been made possible by our many friends and donors. These major improvements touch the experience of millions of Zoo visitors. 2005 promises to be another year of progress.

In 2004 the Santa Barbara Zoo continued to reach out to all segments of our community offering educational, recreational, and conservation opportunities. The enthusiasm of our professional staff and management continues to improve the facility and programs for all to enjoy. In addition, these talented professionals hold leadership positions in national and international conservation, research, and zoological organizations which culminated in our very successful hosting of this year’s regional conference of the American Zoo & Aquarium Association (AZA) in March.

In August we welcomed our Asian elephants, Sujatha and Little Mac, back to Santa Barbara from their temporary visit at Chaffee Zoo in Fresno. With the opening of the renovated and enlarged elephant exhibit, we expanded ADA access to large portions of the Zoo. We continue to make great progress on our long term plan to enhance the guest experience and make the Zoo more accessible to the entire community. Cats of Africa, which opened early in 2003, was home to the birth of a lion cub, “Kiki”- a zoo fi rst- in February. The continued generosity of our many friends and supporters along with countless hours of volunteer time make all these projects possible and make the Zoo a true community endeavor and a precious asset.

Many more exciting and unique opportunities are in store for the Zoo and the Santa Barbara community in the near future. The Zoo and its staff have been supporting and providing assistance to the California Condor Recovery Program for several years. Plans are now under way for an exceptional exhibit at the Zoo. The Zoo’s proposed California condor facility directly serves the needs of the recovery program while giving the public access to see and learn about these amazing birds. The construction of this exhibit along with the reconstruction of the endangered Channel Island fox facility makes the Zoo’s (and Santa Barbara’s) contribution to the success and survival of these local species signifi cant.

I invite you to visit the Zoo and see and enjoy what you and your community has created for itself. The Santa Barbara Zoo, with a long tradition of volunteer investment and community support, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many Santa Barbarans. We’re very excited about the changes at the Zoo.

Come see us again soon.

Research and ConservationThe Zoo took a signifi cant step in the advancement of our research and conservation programs in 2004. We hired our fi rst Research and Conservation Coordinator, Wendy Stanford. After an animal care internship and serving as our fi rst Channel Island fox Conservation Intern, Wendy hit the ground running to broaden and strengthen our research and conservation efforts in many ways.

The Zoo continues to be a primary contributor in the conservation and captive management of Island fox. Wendy Stanford and Alan Varsik were invited to participate in the Press event announcing the listing of the four northern subspecies as Endangered. This involved a trip to Santa Cruz Island with members of the press and a discussion with Russell Galipeau, Channel Islands National Park Superintendent, and Tim Coonan, Channel Islands National Park Terrestrial Biologist. As the only members of the mainland zoo community present, it was a privilege to be recognized for our contributions to the conservation effort.

Animal care staff contributed 104 hours of time supporting the management of foxes on the islands. This doesn’t include the several trips that our veterinarian, Dr. Karl Hill, took to the islands to treat sick or injured foxes.

The 2004 Island Fox Working Group meetings took on a new format, with the endangered listing of the four Northern subspecies. U.S. Fish and Wildlife service has now established the more formalized Island Fox Recovery Coordination Group (RCG). Dr. Karl Hill, Katie Kimble, Ingrid Russell, Wendy Stanford, and Alan Varsik attended the summer’s meetings of the RCG, and serve on various expertise groups. The Zoo continues to maintain the studbook used to manage both the mainland island foxes and those managed by the National Park Service on the islands. This is a valuable tool for appropriate genetic and demographic modeling. On April 8, the Zoo received a Partnership Achievement Award from the National Park Service for our fox conservation work.

Our connection with the California condor continues to evolve. We now have a relationship with the Ventana

Wilderness Society, the organization that monitors condors in Big Sur and Pinnacles National Monument. We have gathered information on the resources needed to support

fi eld conservation, including radio monitoring equipment, which we will be adding to grant applications and donation requests. We’ve also developed opportunities to put staff in the fi eld regularly to support condor conservation.

We have increased and enhanced the research at the Zoo which supports our management needs. In 2004 we presented

data and analysis on the exhibit use by lions in our Cats of Africa. We also gathered initial exhibit use information on our elephants as they explored their new home. This information helps us assess how the exhibit is being used by the animals. It also provides insight into how our guests experience the exhibit. We can make adjustments in management, such as enrichment applications, to increase exhibit usage and improve the guest experience if needed.

We are continuing to use video monitoring and digital recording equipment to gather information on our animals. Video monitoring was used during the birth of our lion cubs. This allowed us to monitor events without disturbing the lions’ situation. The cameras also allowed us to share what was going on in the behind-the-scenes areas with our guests.

Animal Care

When it comes to change, 2004 brought lots of it. The Animal Care Department not only experienced managing several major new or renovated exhibits and new species, it went through a great deal of staff transition and the addition of new staff to the department. All this occurred during the same year the Zoo hosted an American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) regional conference and prepared for a very thorough accreditation process.

Early in the year we helped transform the aging Nocturnal Hall into the Eeeww! exhibit, featuring many new invertebrate species such as the vinegaroon and spiny devil sticks. Our “herp” (herpetology-the study of reptiles and amphibians) team, led by Lead Keeper, Jim Giacobbe, spearheaded making this exhibit a great experience for our guests. The name defi nitely fi ts; rarely does a day go by when you don’t hear one of our guests reinforcing it.

The long awaited return of Sujatha and Little Mac occurred during the summer. Gina Nichols, the Zoo’s fi rst Elephant Program and Behavioral Management Husbandry Coordinator, headed the new elephant team in the safe and successful move and introduction of our elephants to their new space. Not only is the exhibit larger and more dynamic, our management of the elephants has changed to create a safer situation for the keepers

and a more enriching experience for the elephants. The elephants “customized” the exhibit (read: broke a few things) as expected, but overall the new space has worked out well for keepers and elephants. The elephant keepers have made signifi cant progress with the management of our elephants in their new space.

Another major project was the completion of the Wings of Asia exhibit. A new pathway, pool and all new landscaping created an excellent space for both guests and animals. We added many new Asian bird species,

including long-tailed broad bills, Indian rollers, fairy bluebirds, white-cheeked laughing thrushs and blue-crowned pigeons. The complex social introduction of all these species was facilitated by our Lead Keeper, Carlos Abitia, and the rest of the bird team. We continue to add birds to the aviary to enhance our guests’ experience.

A major event for the Animal Care Department was the birth of Kiki, our fi rst lion cub. Although she

had to be hand-reared, we were successful at introducing her back to her mother and to our older lioness, Kali. All of our lions are now located at Cats of Africa. The complex process of lion introductions was facilitated by our mammal team, led by new Lead Keeper Josh Charlton.

We had many new staff members join the Animal Care Department in 2004. Former Lead Keeper, Katie Kimble, changed roles to become the Zoo’s fi rst full-time Registrar. She has brought the current records for all of our animals up to date and is also working on generating accurate historical records. Katie has also handled the paperwork for our many new exhibits and animal transfers.

Since its formation in 2003, the Horticulture Committee has been dedicated to emphasizing the botanical splendor of the Santa Barbara Zoo to the community. In the past year, the Committee strove to enhance visitor approaches to exhibits; to increase the match of plants to the geographic range of the animals on exhibit; to enhance educational opportunities with signage and plant labels; and to create more naming opportunities for donors. Increasing the visibility and recognition of the Zoo’s valuable and diverse plant collection may serve to attract more visitors to the site.

The major accomplishments in 2004 were: four exhibits landscaped with attractive plantings that match their proper geographic regions (Cats of Africa, Elephant Walk, Wings of Asia, and the fl amingo pond); a new South African Garden; two new topiaries; enhanced plantings along the walkway to Cats of Africa; a large new browse garden; and removal of invasive plants from the bioswale below Cats of Africa and the giraffe exhibit (for treating runoff water before it enters the Bird Refuge).

The Horticultural Committee will continue its plans in 2005 with the addition of more crowd-pleasing topiaries, changes to the courtyard pond and the placement of plant labels and interpretive graphics in key locations. In addition to providing much professional advice, many committee members donated planting materials and the funds to make these projects possible.

2004 brought new changes and exciting opportunities to the Education Department. School programs were re-invigorated with new curriculum and a fresh focus on home school students thanks to Education Specialist Robyn Charlton. We developed and hosted a special home school open house where home school parents discovered what the Zoo had to offer as they sampled programs, met with other parents and toured the Zoo. All told, more than 35,000 students visited the Santa Barbara Zoo as part of their school fi eld trips in 2004.

Lori Krubsack, Education Specialist, particiapted in the National Geographic and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Channel Island Marine Sanctuary Field Study

on Santa Cruz Island. Twelve student/teacher pairs from around the country were selected to participate in this rare four-day expedition to experience remote island life. During the trip, students had the opportunity to study and photograph the landscape, fl ora and fauna of the island.

Fee-based programs continued to expand and attract new audiences with the addition of Education Specialist Ivonne Budianto-Hunsinger. In 2004 we saw a dramatic increase in our popular Zoo Snooze program; over 700 participants joined in the overnight adventures here at the Zoo. The imaginative Toddler Trek program for ages 18-35 months continued to please audiences since its introduction in 2003 and remains one of the most popular classes around. Ninety-eight wildly educational programs were offered to families including two week-long camps during winter and spring breaks.

Summer Zoo Camp never disappoints local families as the best choice for a local summer day camp and 2004 was no exception. Fun-fi lled song books and parent take-home packets were created and offered during morning check-in to supplement and extend the Zoo Camp experience.

Volunteers once again played an essential role in the success of the Zoo as we celebrated the Zoo’s fi rst National Volunteer Week with an All-Volunteer Recognition Event in April. The Zoo presented volunteers with Leadership and Commitment Awards and Honorary volunteers were recognized for their service to the Zoo. New docent-led tours continue to be developed and brought in additional revenue through private bookings.

The Education Department’s reach extended beyond our gates. An exciting and innovative partnership was pursued, designed, and implemented with California State University Channel Islands as we created a new college level course,“The Zoo: Conservation, Education and Recreation.” The class is an interdisciplinary study of zoos and zoological gardens from scientifi c, managerial, recreational and educational perspectives. Activities included fi eld trips to our Zoo, lectures led by Zoo staff, discussions and guest speakers. We also continued our outreach efforts through local festivals, science fairs, and community events, including Earth Day.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is grateful for the generous support of its donors. As a private, nonprofi t organization that receives no regular tax-based funding, the Zoo relies on the donations of individuals, corporations, and foundations to maintain and improve the exhibits, facilities, and grounds.

The Zoo’s operating costs are funded by admissions, memberships, concessions, and retail sales. Therefore donations to park improvements are spent entirely on the projects for which they were donated. The following list demonstrates the scope of community support for the Santa Barbara Zoo.
