One on Ones: Conduct monthly with each direct report if possible; no less than quarterly. These sessions should be distraction-free (i.e. cell phones off) and should be held in an environment where no interruptions are allowed. Focus your time with direct reports on improving relationships and listening. Handle conflict during these sessions with care with the awareness that in order to effectively navigate conflict with any person, there must be a solid relationship of trust in place prior to resolution.

Daily Huddles: This essential practice enables a rhythm of healthy communication within your teams. Invite each person to choose one thing they will achieve daily that is tied to their critical number (the one metric that is most closely correlated with success in their role). Everyone remains standing during these meetings. Huddles last 12 minutes or less. Choose a word of the day that everyone says in unison at the end of the huddle (think “ready, break!” in a football huddle). A tutorial video is available at the above link to explain additional details.

One Clear Goal (OCG): When a mountaineer attempts to climb Everest she must ascend several camps prior to reaching the summit. Think of the OCG as incremental steps toward a larger goal (Jim Collins’ ‘BHAG’). Each person in your organization should have a personal OCG and a professional OCG. Integrate the OCG into one on ones and encourage open sharing of progress or obstacles in huddles and other team engagements. OCG’s should span a 90-day period so each person sets 4 OCG’s per year.
