Hello, Between December’s Board meeting and the end of January a great deal has happened at the Centre. One big announcement is that Linda secured a 3 year grant from the J.E Child Foundation for $100,000/year to support the Rapid Access 4 Clinic which is our incontinence and erectile function clinic. The Christmas party was a great success and thanks to Bill Brooks, we made the society pages for this event and we were featured in his year in review column. If you didn’t attend, you missed the best party ever. The Research Department has had an amazing year with revenue up, providing 16% of our total revenue. Last year it was 5%. Our clinical patient numbers are all up and last year we had over 12,000 patient visits. On January 4 th , Maryse Saint Laurent, PCC Board Director, joined the Board of Turquoise Hills Resources which is an international mining company. Hello,

Between December’s Board meeting and the end of January a great deal has happened at the Centre.

On January 4th, Maryse Saint Laurent, PCC Board Director, joined the Board of Turquoise Hills Resources which is an international mining company.

Medical & Operations

Quick Facts: 1. Physiotherapy is no longer covered by PCC unless exceptional circumstances. This is usually covered by insurance. 2. In 2017 we have started measuring how many new RAC V patients, (active surveillance) there are each quarter. 3. The exercise program continues to grow. 4. ADT increasing in numbers due to an increase in research patients and RAC VI, (Androgen Deprivation Therapy). 5. RAC II has increased and rather than dropping one or two sessions, we had to add 4 sessions over the course of the year. 6. The RAC programs are looking at trialing psychological counseling and mindfulness training for Androgen Deprivation therapy and active surveillance patients.

All RAC programs continue to grow, unfortunately due to demand, but also awareness rising.

Men’s Health

The Men’s Health Initiative has operated for one year now, and has been very successful. We are in the process of collating the data and mining it for trends and areas to focus on. We will follow up with three rural Primary Care Networks in Q2 . A more comprehensive report will be available for the next Board meeting and a plan in order to engage men further in their own health while staying true to the vision of the PCC.

Number of clinics in the past year – 26 Clinics Number of patients seen – 1,024

1. In those who responded to follow up attempts 6-12 weeks post Men’s Health Visit: 79% said yes 2. In those individuals who read it, how many found the information useful? 71% said yes 3. Spoke to Health Care Professional 6 weeks after going to the MAN VAN: 37% said yes 4. Made changes: 36% said yes 5. Noted Trends for Positive changes:

6. Recommendation of MAN VAN to friends/family: 100% said yes 7. Additional Comment Major Trends:

• Felt that the accessibility, convenience and ease of the MAN VAN is crucial to men’s health in Alberta.

• Likes how this keeps men aware of all aspects of their health.

• Felt that it was a very professionally run program. • That the visit was an overall good/positive experience.

proSPECT Study – PCC making a difference!

The proSPECT study is one of many important studies the PCC is currently participating in. In all studies the sooner the results become available the sooner our patients benefit from new discoveries. PCC has made a significant contribution to the overall patient recruitment for the prospect study. Forty-four centres across North America are actively enrolling patients. Our centre is the second highest enrolling site with 31 patients enrolled! In contrast to our many treatment studies, this study will determine whether an experimental drug is effective in detecting prostate cancer tissue when used with SPECT imaging. A SPECT scan is a type of nuclear imaging test, which means it uses a radioactive substance and a special camera to create 3-D pictures. Eligible patients who are scheduled for a prostatectomy are booked for a screening visit at the PCC. At this visit the study nurse collects baseline information (medical history, blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) and blood samples are taken. The patient then completes the SPECT scan at Mayfair Diagnostics. Between 1 and 42 days prior to the patient’s scheduled surgery the patient returns to PCC for a follow-up visit. At this time additional blood samples are taken and the findings of the SPECT scan are reviewed with the patient. By comparing tissue from the patient’s surgery with the images from the SPECT scan the study will determine the accuracy of the experimental drug in detecting prostate cancer tissue.
