Special Olympics!
A s motorists
travel on
Route 3 they will
notice the addition of a bottle donation
trailer in front of the MDI Center. This
trailer has banners on both sides. They
explain that the donations received will be
used to fund Downeast Horizons partici-
pation in Special Olympics. The hope is
that as visiting tourists and campers pass
by the trailer, they will have a convenient
place to drop their bottles and cans while
helping athletes at the same time!
Downeast Horizons Annual Dinner
M ore than 225 guests, including program participants,
parents and guardians, Downeast Horizons staff, and
members of the Board of Directors attended the Downeast
Horizons Annual Dinner.
Two employees were recognized for 20 years of service
along with another recognized for 10 years of service.
Thanking the program participants, parents, guardians, Board of
Directors and the staff, Tony Zambrano, Executive Director of
Downeast Horizons, recognized that, for we have transformed
Downeast Horizons into one of the largest and most well-
respected agencies in Downeast Maine.
A good time was had by all. It was apparent to all in attendance
that here was a demonstration that such activities can truly help
children and adults with developmental disabilities to enjoy their lives.
In Their
Own
Words…
“I like attending pro-
gram because it gets me
out in the community
with friends” said pro-
gram participant Kenny
Pelkey. Kenny has been
coming to Downeast
Horizons for three years.
He is a part of the Ban-
gor Day Program.
Kenny enjoys coming to
Day Program because of
the daily activities that
are planned and “They
are all free to me,” he
said.
Kenny works five days
per week doing janitorial
work at the Bangor Of-
fice. When Kenny isn’t
at Program he enjoys
being at home, playing
his Play Station 2 or
watching wrestling on
TV. He also likes going
on walks.
One of Kenny’s goals
this year is losing weight
by exercising on a regu-
lar basis. Kenny current-
ly lives with his parents
but is in the process of
moving into his own
apartment. “I’m really
excited to be out on my
own!”
T his Summer the Children’s Program participated in the Acadia National Park 2013 Trail
Quest Program. This program is free to us, and encourages the children to explore Aca-
dia as they are required to complete 12 hikes. The children must prove they completed the
hike by taking a picture of themselves at the trail sign or by making a rubbing of the sign.
Once 12 trails
are completed,
the children will
be entered into a
drawing with
prizes donated
by L.L. Bean.
The drawing
will be complet-
ed at during
“Take Pride In
Acadia Day” on
November 2,
2013.
‘Darling’s Ice Cream For a Cause’ Helps Raise Funds for Children’s Program

Darling’s Ice Cream Truck, serving free ice cream for donations at
Speedway 95. Downeast Horizons staff dished out ice cream at the event as

Children’s Program.
