NJAMT JANUARY 2020

NJAMT Music Therapist of the Month: Danielle Barbera, MT-BC

Where did you receive your music therapy training? Undergrad: Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ. Internship: Hudson Valley Hospice, Poughkeepsie, NY. Graduate School: (Current) Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ. Where do you currently work? I am currently one of the music therapists for Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack, NJ. I am also a music therapist for the creative arts agency, Muzique, in which we provide multiple creative arts services, both therapeutic and recreational, in home or at the studio in Woodbury, NJ.

Tell us about your position

Matheny Medical and Educational Center located in Peapack, NJ is home to 100 children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities in which we provide many services to help all clients thrive in life. Matheny's main campus provides a special hospital, school, and group home to these patients throughout their lives. As a music therapist at Matheny Medical Center, I work in the in hospital in which I see patients for both group and individual music therapy sessions where many of the clients goals revolve around improving communication skills, social skills, emotional awareness, cognitive awareness, and fine/gross motor skills. For the creative arts agency, Muzique, I provide music therapy and adaptive guitar lessons for children and adults with developmental disabilities in their homes throughout Morris, Essex, and Somerset counties in which many of the clients goals involve improving communication skills, cognitive awareness, emotional awareness, and fine/gross motor skills. Who has influenced you as a music therapist? For me, many people have influenced who I am as a music therapist and as a person. However, the person who has significantly influenced me throughout my process of becoming a music therapist is Dr. Brain Abrams of Montclair State University. Being a student of his since 2013, I have learned far more than I can have imagined not only about the field, research, populations, and practice, but the importance of being musical beings connecting through the power of music.

How do you practice self-care?

Self care is essential to keep ourselves grounded, nurtured, and thriving as music therapists. In order to perform my job well in ways that benefits not only my clients but myself, I must practice self care for at least 30 minutes everyday. This includes reading one of my many favorite books, using watercolors, practicing yoga and meditation, and of course learning new music! As I continue to work in the field, I realize the importance of self care in that we as clinicians cannot ethically and morally take care of and produce beneficial work with our clients if we cannot support and take care of ourselves. What is an artist, song, or piece of music you enjoy and would recommend for our listening this month?

An artist I highly recommend listening to this month is Alanis Morissette. Her use of music and writing is so brave, honest, and refreshing!

If you could give our readers some words of wisdom, advice, or encouragement, what would they be?

If there was one piece of advice that I could give the readers it would be to treat the day, your clients, and most importantly yourself with as much kindness as possible in every moment. Some affirmations I use to achieve this are:

- I will give myself space to grow and learn -I will give myself the care and attention I know I deserve -I will accept my emotions and let them serve their purpose - I will allow myself to be who I am without judgment
