President’s Message
Greetings Stonebridge!
Welcome to another edition of the Stonebridge Slate. As I write this, we are experiencing what I hope is the last hurrah of old man winter! Soon we will be able to smell the crisp spring air, and witness the hustle and bustle of spring activities on the soccer pitch or the ball diamond! Our programming team has been working hard to get our spring soccer program up and running, all while readying some exciting new springtime Stonebridge activities, like Ultimate Frisbee. We have made some changes to our programming team and we hope it will mean more efficient communication and correspondence with our members, and efficiency related to the logistics of all of our programs. Stay tuned to our website, Facebook page, and the fall leisure guide for programs related updates.
It is around this time of year that I start speaking with our executive team about their plans for next year related to volunteering with the Stonebridge Community Association. I am aware that the SCA will have some significant holes to fill for the 2017-18 year and would like to encourage anyone thinking about meeting some people in the neighborhood and learning more about civics in Saskatoon to consider joining our executive team. You can email me for more information on available positions.
I think that’s it for now. I hope to see you at the Stonebridge Community garage sale on May 13th, throughout the summer on the trails in our beautiful parks, and of course, at our 3rd annual movie in the park at the end of the summer!

Ward 7 Update
Hello Stonebridge residents,
Below are some updates from City Hall. If you have questions or comments for me, please following up using the contact information provided.
Spray Park
The spray park at Alexander McGillivray Young Park is scheduled to open to the public this June. The majority of the contract is complete, but some final work is taking place now, including the installation of nozzles and fixtures, irrigation, and sod/seeding. The park is scheduled to open along with all city spray parks on June 1st. I would like to thank all Stonebridge residents for their patience with this project, and I know this will be a well-used feature of Alexander McGillivray Young Park this summer and into the future.
Preston and Taylor
Although this intersection is not located in the Stonebridge neighbourhood, it’s well used by Stonebridge residents and affects traffic flow along Preston. This July the intersection will have some long-awaited upgrades completed, including the addition of both north- and south-bound left turn lanes and signals. This should improve traffic flow and safety in the area.
Neighbourhood Traffic Review
Traffic issues closer to home will be the subject of an upcoming meeting on May 25th at Circle Drive Alliance Church. Residents may recall that the first such meeting was held in November, and at this meeting the city will present some proposed solutions to the concerns and issues raised by residents so far. Your feedback is important and will help to form the traffic plan that will go to council. Spread the word and mark your calendars for May 25th at 7:00 pm!

The imminent opening of Chief Whitecap School is a noteworthy development for Stonebridge, but also for the Whitecap Dakota First Nation (WDFN), Saskatoon’s neighbor since the city’s location was recommended by Chief Whitecap himself in the early 1880s. The school is the latest result of a twenty-year partnership between the First Nation and Saskatoon Public Schools (SPS) that has connected the Whitecap school and students with the broad range of educational services within SPS, and has afforded all students increased opportunities to build strong relationships across cultures.
Within that broader partnership, Chief Whitecap School is unique. It is supported by its own agreement between SPS and WDFN, funded by the Saskatoon Public School Division and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, to enable students from grades 5 to 8 from WDFN to attend CWS, after completing Kindergarten to grade 4 in their home community.
To commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary, and to strengthen the connections
between WDFN and CWS, the WDFN has secured a Canada 150 grant from the federal government to develop educational resources for CWS. Alongside curriculum intended to fill gaps related to Dakota history, language, and culture for all grade levels, the centrepieces of the project are the interactive walls in CWS. The main wall of the culture room will outline key features of Dakota history and culture using multimedia and hands-on approaches. The room also integrates seamlessly with outdoor landscaping and plants that continue the themes featured on the interactive walls.
Groups from the broader Stonebridge, Saskatoon, and WDFN communities are welcome and encouraged to use the culture room outside of school hours, so this is a resource that benefits the entire community. Stay tuned for future announcements about a Canada 150 event in the fall, featuring artistic and cultural performances and tours of the new culture room designs.

St. Kateri Tekawitha School Update
Hello, future families of St. Kateri Tekakwitha School. It is hard to believe that we are already into May and the doors of St. Kateri Tekakwitha School will be opening up in less than four months. We just want to update people on a few points as we move toward opening.
Work is progressing very well and continues to be on schedule.
Paint and flooring are already in most of the building and the gym
is almost totally complete. The school will look amazing!

The Stonebridge Community Garden has officially been approved by the City of Saskatoon. The community garden will be located on the east side of Peter Zakreski Regional Park between the ball diamonds and Cornish Road. The garden will be comprised of 26 plots. These plots will include 1 community plot, 15 large plots and 10 small plots. The large plots will be 10' x 15' and the small plots will be 7.5' x 5'. The plot application deadline was April 21st. Those who were awarded plots were contacted prior to April 28th.
Garden preparations will begin mid-May. The City of Saskatoon will irrigate and rototill the space. Once that has been completed, community volunteers and gardeners will clean up the space and mark out the plots. We hope to have everyone's gardens planted by the first week in June.
The approved design for the Stonebridge Community Garden includes a fruit orchard where all members of the community can gather and pick fruit. We hope to start planting the orchard this fall; however, our timeline is dependent on funds and donations. A detailed list of donations needed for our garden can be found on the Stonebridge Community Garden Collective Facebook page.

SCA Spring Programming
Run Club
Wednesday at 7:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm- May 17 through June 28. Drop-in (no registration required). Runners will divide into groups based on pace and ability. Leaders will come from within the group, with opportunities for different leaders each week. The group will be free and open to all. Meeting place will be Alexander McGillivray Young Park, by the ball diamonds.
Ultimate Frisbee
Sundays, 4:30p to 6pm, May 7 to July 9th (no sessions May and July long weekends). Cost: $40. Includes 1 disc that each person is free to take home. All individuals 16+ are encourage to participate. Location: Blair Nelson Park

Spring Cleaning Tips 1. 1. The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and soda water. The bubbling action of
the soda water combines with the abrasive texture of the salt to make a great cleaner.
2. 2. The best way to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet it is to lay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar and let it set for an hour. The deposits will soften and become easier to remove.
3. 3. Clean screens with a scrap of carpeting. It makes a powerful brush that removes all the dirt.
4. 4. Clean windows with a rag and soapy water, and then dry them with another rag. You can also go to an auto-parts store and buy a windshield squeegee, which cleans very well.
5. 5. If drapes are looking drab, take them out of the window, remove the hooks and run them through the air-fluff cycle in the dryer along with a wet towel (to draw off the dust) for 15 minutes. Hang them back in the windows immediately.
6. 6. Clean the blades of a ceiling fan by covering them with a coat of furniture polish. Wipe off the excess and lightly buff.
7. 7. Sometimes comforters, blankets and pillows don't need to be cleaned, but they do need to be aired out after a long winter in your closed-up home. Take them outside and hang them on a clothesline for a day.
