Kirsten Bannister Interior Design were given the brief by
Exclusive Designs to renovate their new premises
located within county house, 23 high pavement,
Nottingham. The brief stated that the new premises were
to be of a contemporary style, but to also reflect the
heritage of the building. The brief also wanted the
interior to reflect exclusive designs “imagination,
creativity and professionalism.”
Nottingham is full of history and culture and nowadays
home to a newly developed university, 2 shopping
centres, restaurants, art galleries and much more.
Renowned for its history in lace making. During the 18th
century especially- in 1799 there were 6 lace makers but
in 1832 there were 186! The oldest part of the city
(dated back to 5th
and 6th
Century) was named “the lace
market” after the success of lace making.
“Home of legendary outlaw Robin Hood, dynamic culture,
rich history and sporting glory.” (visit Nottingham)
23 high pavement was built in the 16th
century , located
in central Nottingham and one of the oldest streets in
the city where many of the buildings are listed. The
street itself holds much history and during the
Georgian era, was the most fashionable places to live.
Taking into account the location of the premises, the
history and current day styles, Kirsten bannister
interior design has concluded that the lighting and
audio visual schemes must reflect all of these in some
shape or form.
The design will try to encapsulate the lace heritage and
history of the city through the lighting schemes at the
same time as introducing high end modern audio visual
technology to reflect the modern day Nottingham.
The Georgian era was of great wealth and opulence so
the scheme will introduce some aspects of this.
The overall space will have theme of lace. The mixture
of contemporary and heritage styles through the use of
different layers of light forms and high tech audio
visual will fulfill this brief.

CONCEPT
Lighting and audio visual schemes are often
overlooked or rushed in office design. Resulting in
frustrated employees who become less productive
with high levels of sick days. Research shows that
lighting has a huge impact on people. It can have a
significant impact on your concentration and
productivity.
In addition to this, economically, the type of
lighting used can also reduce energy consumption,
resulting in reduced electricity bills.
As the brief stated, Exclusive Designs are “a young
and vibrant company, known for its innovative and
original designs.” they also want to reflect the
heritage of the building within the design.
After reviewing the original proposed design, to
complement the company itself and to fulfil the
requested brief, we have decided to use a variety of
high tech audio visual equipment and high quality,
sustainable lighting. This will ensure that there is
not only a sense of creativity, heritage and
dynamicity, but also a space that is both
environmentally and employee friendly.
The introduction of efficient, up to date technology
and lighting will create a very professional and
sleek environment.
the request for the heritage to be incorporated,
will be fulfilled by having a theme of “lace”
running through the premises via various creative
light sources. These will be from well known
brands and creative designers. The pattern we want
to follow is shown in fig 1. the reception area will
be represented by raindrop lighting to mimic the
lace tassels shown in fig 1. recessed circular and
linear led lighting will be used creating a flowing
pattern to each of the office spaces.

the reception area could be classed as being the most
important area within the office. This area communicates what
kind of business you are, in this case vibrant and creative.
Every client that walks through your doors will get their first
impression when they see the layout, lighting, visual textures
and flow. Your guests will spend a few or more minutes waiting
in the reception area, giving them time to analyse the area. It is
vital that in this case the vibrance, creativity and
professionalism is reflected well.
Your Employees are also effected by the reception area. A
positive welcome when they arrive to work boosts their
mindset, as well as giving them a sense of identity reminding
them they are part of something big and important.
When you enter the proposed reception area you will walk into
a room of layered lighting, creating a creative and visually
textured space.
The first layer- this will consist of a Recessed organic shaped
circular and linear led lighting pattern. (source 1 &2) these
will not only add ambience (800- 1000 lumens) but an
interesting lighting visual. The circular pattern is there to
reflect and embrace the heritage theme of “lace”. The pattern
will then morph into a mixture of both lines made of the linear
lighting (source 2) and further circles, highlighting and
directing, like light pathways, to other areas within the office.
This is an effective source of not just ambient lighting but
also cutting edge task lighting. Arguably it is also very
decorative.
The lighting uses the nLight lighting control options, which
provide daylight dimming, occupancy detection and constant
lumen management. It also has remote user access which
enables facilities managers to optimize energy savings,
“perform system upgrades and conduct real-time, performance
analyses and reporting.”
Overall, This lighting should make a lasting impression on your
visitors and is the cutting edge of commercial led lighting.

The next layer is the decorative
“algorithm” vibia lighting, Designed by
Toan Nguyen. (source 3) this will be a high
end, dynamic visual, focal feature upon
entering the reception area.
It will not only add to the ambience but
also add textural depth. Composed of
blown glass spheres, with 2 watt
dimmable led lights, suspended at
different heights, depending upon the
chosen design effect. These encapsulate
the lace tassels as described within the
concept.

Reception area
To add further decorative and ambient lighting, We
have included 3 decorative sphere lamps. (source 4)
These could be placed in the seating area of
reception. The lights are of an organic aesthetic,
skilfully cut from an orb of metal, balancing to one
side putting forth a magnifying light onto the
reception brick wall adding a great textured light
visual. On the interior, a milky white glass disk
shields the light source, evenly diffusing the light
with subtle brightness.Using E27 LED 9W/2700K
(60W) Dimmable bulbs, so the ambience can be
adjusted accordingly, helping to create various
atmospheres.
“The laser cutting allows full access to the light
source, creating light effects and intriguing and
precious shades, with its simple and timeless design.”
(lampefeber)
When your clients enter the building there will
always be a second of anticipation as to whether they
are in the correct location. To help reduce this, it is
important that there is a strong visual, highlighting
the company name “exclusive designs.” similar to that
shown in source 5- their experience then begins
immediately at ease. “exclusive designs” will be placed
on the back reception wall highlighted by the floor
uplighters. The design has included the use of flexa
tera 6 ip67 uplighters. (further details found in
director rationale)
The reception area already has plenty of natural
light through the front two windows, so it is
important that with such a variety of light sources,
that the walls are of a suitable colour and texture,
so that the lighting scheme is effective and fulfils
the brief and not absorbed or conflicting with each
other. In this design there is a mixture of brick, glass
and white chalk matt paint, all of which will
complement the proposed light sources.

Exclusive designs is a professional,
innovative company, so it is important that
these words are truly accurate for both
employees and clients. If they were to enter
the office and see outdated technology, the
words become irrelevant.
As we mentioned earlier the reception is the
most important area in the office, it is
critical that It not only look professional
and welcoming, but it also has the correct
tools. The correct tools, so in this instance,
the chosen audio visual products, ensure
that the office remains high tech,
successfully functional and efficient. They
also promote a comfortable productive
working environment.
The key is to introduce tools that do not
overwhelm employees but to make their work
day run smoother and efficiently. They are
not just for show either, they do not need
to be seen to create cutting edge work space
they just need to work correctly.
Those products that are on show need to be
clutter free and have clean smooth lines-
which all help embrace the young and vibrant
brief.
Audio visual products
Waiting in reception area can be rather boring,
again, why it is so important to make it visually
exciting and interesting.
To help with this, we have included a sleek,
frameless “decovue” television screen.
(solution 1)
This will be mounted directly onto the old
brick wall to the left of the reception. the
Decovue wall mounts are firmly fitted to the
back of the product. It enables you to mount
Decovue directly against the wall, without the
use of a bracket. (VESA compatible)
It can be used to show footage of previous
projects and information about the company
itself maybe even a film about the history of
the area. If you decide it is rather unsightly at
times you are able to customize it so that it
blends in to the brick or something else
perhaps a mirror.
“Once it is turned off, it quickly blends into your
environment with precision.
The sublime mirror design used in its front panel
makes it quite classy.
Decovue shows crisp, clear pictures when it is turned
on, but it upgrades into a mirror in a seamless
fashion once it is put off. It is time to bid goodbye to
the conventional TV in your space that does not
evoke excellence.” (evervue.com)
It also has the latest Android 6.0 installed
in it, so you can access the wifi network then
stream content from smart phones and
tablets or the tv networks.

When your clients arrive, for some
reason your receptionist maybe
unable to welcome them. So that
they are not left un-noticed or so
that “unwelcome” guests are not
missed, a visitor management system
works well.
Solution 2 illustrates “the
receptionist” electronic management
system. This allows visitors to
check in independently. “the
receptionist” will then notify the
relevant person. They can then able
come and greet the client
immediately upon notification.
“The Receptionist for iPad provides a new level
of efficiency and security for your front desk,
creating a modern check-in experience.” (the
receptionist.com)
It will also monitor deliveries and
any contractors that may need to
visit.
This system will present a
professional efficient service to
your clients.

The receptionist features:
Automated visitor check in – so your reception
staff are able to leave the front desk, without
Clients being noticed.
Customized visitor experience- a unique check-in
process can be set up for different types of
visitors.
Delivery management – you will be able to connect
directly with delivery drivers and provide them
with further instructions.
Notifications via email, sms – your employees will
be automatically notified upon arrival of their
visitor.
Message forwarding – it will forward visitor
notifications to a colleague when the original
contact is away – visitors will not be kept waiting.
Multi lingual check in options – your clients will
be presented with a choice of language options.
Active directory – you can add employees contacts
to the receptionist to keep your staff contacts
current.
Pre registration and returning visitor recognition.
Evacuation list
Make sure everyone gets out safely in an
emergency. The Evacuation List allows you to see
all currently checked-in visitors, and then check
their names off of the list after you confirm their
safety.
MEETING ROOM-
A fresh, colourful, high
tech, modern meeting
room with an accent of
heritage.
Meeting room-
Source 5- linear lighting
Meeting rooms are no longer the large
room with table and chairs, with
perhaps a conference call facility.
Your boardroom is a core room/ a hub-
where both your clients and employees
will spend much time. It is a space that
not only has to present you in a
professional manner, it also needs to
be comfortable, efficient and engaging.
Meeting rooms can often be dull and
uninspiring, so it is vital that your
meeting room contains high tech audio
visual solutions plus the right level of
lighting.
Upon entering the room, you will notice the
continuation of the creative linear and
circular recessed lighting (source 5). This
not only adds vibrant interest to the room,
but an additional ambience to the natural
light that already enters the room through
the west side windows. The integral
controls create a digitally addressable
luminaire that is perfect to emphasize lines
and clean contemporary design.
The lighting can also be adjusted to the
required level of lux using the dimmer
controls, which is all so vital for a positive
space- if it is too bright /too much glare,
your employees and clients may find it
uncomfortable and distracting after a while.
The adjustability is also required for using
the tv screen, a reduction in light would be
needed to reduce screen wash out.

Your proposed meeting room may look
professional but does it sound
professional? Often is the case that
the speakers in meeting rooms are
positioned incorrectly, resulting in
people not being able to hear clearly,
then getting distracted and bored.
Video conferencing has become a
critical business tool in todays modern
eco friendly world, (reducing cars on roads,
using public transport to attend meetings) so it
is vital, that all your clients or
colleagues that are within the room or
at the other end of the video call can
be heard. Correctly chosen speaker
selection and placement has a mass
affect on this experience. A well
planned speaker dispersion plan and
quality speakers are required.
Overall your meeting room will be an
exciting, vivid and engaging space where
both clients and employees will feel
engaged, creative and stimulated.

We propose that the meeting room has
Sonance is4 Invisible Speakers
(Solution9) installed. These will be
positioned either side of the sony
bravia tv.
Sonance speakers are known for
delivering exceptional sound quality
that emanates from your walls or
ceilings without any visible signs of the
speaker.
Once installed they can then be
covered with any wall covering, they
don’t just blend in they will become
part of it.
These speakers are ideal for your
meeting room, as they feature a 170
degree hemispherical dispersion, so the
sound will be spread out widely from
the speaker, delivering even volume and
sound quality throughout the whole
space, with fewer speakers.
Often a concern is that sound will pass
through the speaker wall to the
neighboring room. The Sonance has a
built in enclosure that will improve the
sound quality and help noise reduction.

using the ClickShare App from mobile
phones or tablets.
The Barco will allow up to 16
participant's to connect simultaneously
and up to 4 people to present their
information onto one screen at the same
time.
The device’s application programming
interface (API) means that it easily
integrates into the network it is
connected to without any hassle.
Touch screens will be included so that
you, your clients and employees can
annotate the content and save it when
required. This is a very useful function/
tool for designers.
Barco click share
It is always a vital requirement to have the
facility to communicate with clients that
are unable to attend meeting's, so a good
quality conference call product is of high
importance.
We have included a highly recognized
conference solution- the Crestron
M100.(Solution 6)
The M100 is a touch screen, tabletop
solution that will provide you with the
functionality to call, present and video
conference. You and your clients are able
to connect either by plugging into the
solution or wirelessly and then present
onto the mounted screen, the sony bravia.
The M100 is equipped with the latest
Huddly IQ camera (solution 7). The camera
contains a 4K single lens that provides
multiple streams and can detect and count
those that are in its field of view.(fig 1) For
clear audio sound to those not within the
room there is an incorporated four
microphone 360 degree array. “Huddly IQ’s
software-enhanced embedded microphone

workspaces
Fun, dynamic workspaces-
Where creativity thrives…
Work spaces
Collaboration and creativity are most successful when
we can share and display thoughts and ideas. As the
design shows there are various areas of open plan
work spaces, but also areas where employees can go
and work in smaller groups or individually. It has been
proven that “Top performing companies spend 23% more
time collaborating than average companies.” (penketh
group)
It is also key that the lighting is correct- People
respond best to working in well-lit rooms – and the
more natural the light, the better. Within the proposed
design, all the workspaces have a good level of
natural light due to the interior glass walls. So all
the light that enters the building is able to pass
through to all areas. But this light is variable so not
enough to luminate the spaces sufficiently at all times.
the required level of lux within an office for computer
workstations/ drawing boards of designers, should be
between 300 – 500 lux. So it is vital that the
suggested overhead linear lighting in the workspaces
is customized to create a constant natural daylight
level of lux, so not too bright, then to add to the
ambience/lux levels when required, task lights are
available on each workstation.
“The HSE reports that allowing workers in open plan
offices to manage their individual lighting can increase
job satisfaction and decrease the experience of
stress.” (oktra)
Not only does lowering the lux level of the overhead
lighting to 300 lux and using in task lighting create
comfortable, more interesting, productive workspaces,
but it will also help reduce the energy costs
tremendously.

The benQ WiT task light (Source 6), is highly
recommended by top architects. Compared
with traditional lamps, WiT delivers light
evenly across your entire working area
(fig 2), eliminating contrast glare and
enabling your employees to flexibly
adjust the brightness and colour
temperature (2700K-5700K). Every
employees has their own preference to
the how their workspace is lit, so using
this particular task light has the facility
to enable them to control their
workspaces individually, without
interfering with others.
It can be presented in a variety of
colours, so as per the presented design,
the colour of the lamp will match the
designs allocated work area colour. This
will assist in the visual identification of
each workspace area.
The BenQ has “Intelligent control to detect
environment illuminance and deliver the best light to
balance contrast glare; Tailored to your own
brightness and colour temperature for different
scenarios to suit your needs.” (benq)

Directors office
a vivid, stimulating, fun yet professional directors office.
Directors office-
It is important that the directors office is
both visually exciting and representative
of the company's ethos and
professionalism. The design needs to
complement the rest of the office, but
perhaps have some further added visual
interest and atmosphere. Employees and
clients need to see that this room is of
someone important, but also feel they
able to relax slightly, so are more
inclined to be fully engaged and
productive.
To meet this aim, we have incorporated
various light sources, wall signage and
modernist décor. (fig 3)
Positioned onto the bare brick walls,
some positive word art can be seen. This
signage will be accent lit (fig 3) by recessed

The proposed position of the screen means
potentially the images could be washed out, with
the windows being located directly opposite. To
stop this there will be design complementing

Your company's ethos is creativity, young and
vibrant, so that means your employees need to
be managed and inspired to suit this. A
creative company needs to have spaces that
help invigorate and inspire creative minds.
Some of the best ideas often happen over
lunch or coffee- so in the Break out area.
The break out area is a social space that
should offer a comfortable, relaxed and
inspiring place to socialise with colleagues or
even hold informal meetings. Its gives your
employees somewhere to escape and refresh,
come away from the “drawing board”, to give
them time to recalibrate. It also gives
employees from all departments a chance to
socialise out of the formal office
environment.
To fulfil this aim, we decided that the break
out room should have a more colourful- up
beat design. More of a contrast to the rest
of the office, so it helps the employees break
away from the space they have been working in
most of each day- giving them a new
environment and surroundings.
The lighting used in this room are stylish,
brightly coloured pendent lights.(source 9) The
proposed design includes brightly coloured
break out chairs- so to add a finishing touch
we have recommended these bespoke led
decorative pendant’s that can be made to
match the designs, Four Cast high chairs. The
lights will hang over the proposed high
benches, adding some task lighting too. Source 9- Synergy bespoke pendant lights
Sphere lighting
In addition to the “funky” pendant
lighting, we have included some
“calmer” low level decorative
lighting, for the cosy corner. In
the proposed design we have
include “2 High cloud” chairs for
employees to find some private or
quiet time. On the floor we have
placed sphere floor lamp similar to
that found in the found in the
reception area, but this time made
out or ring pulls! (source 10) adding
a sense of imagination and fun, it
also promotes a sense of eco
awareness and sustainability. The
pattern continues to touch upon
the lace theme. The led light will
add texture by reflecting patterns
onto the surrounding walls and
furniture.

Spectrum S

Employees need to be able relax and
share their ideas, so we have included
a 60” Spectrum Smart TV. (solution 11)
It will give employees time to maybe
sit together and watch events, films,
sport- creating a casual, re-
energising environment, allowing
them to unwind.
The fantastic feature with this TV is
that it is non invasive with its gap
free mount- so sits flush to the wall.
When it is not in use it can be used to
display art and photos, so it looks
like a framed picture. Or it can be
used to display projects as a
rotating photo album.
Included is the latest Android TV,
plus apps such as Netflix. Apple TV
and Amazon Fire can also be added.
Another feature is the
spontaneously lighting up when you
turn on the light, reducing washing
out of the picture. When the rooms
gets darker the screen will get
darker creating less glare.
So that the sound is projected
successfully, it will be connected to
the sonance speakers (solution9), as
found in the meeting room.
Solution 11- Spectrum Smart TV
There maybe quite a few of your employees
In the Break Out Area at one time, so the
proposed TV may need a helping hand to
project its sound.
So that the breakout area maintains its
clean, bright feel, we propose the same
speakers used in the meeting room- the
Sonance IS4.(Solution 9) they will be
invisible but placed either side of the
screen. This will help keep a fresh
uncluttered look.
We have added an IQ Huddly camera, to be
positioned below the screen, so that the
employees have the facility to skype or
similar.

TOILETS- Lighting
Lighting
Office toilet designs, often get
overlooked. All the inspiration can
get easily get focused on the areas of
a design that are used more openly so
the main areas of the office. But
actually the toilets are very
important! They can often be
regarded as a safe haven that offers
you, your clients and employees a
moment of respite from their day. They
are often where gossip takes place, or
a dressing room for those that may
have cycled/ run into work or planning
or socialising after work. Employees
are more productive when they have
clean, functional, interesting toilets.
They gain a sense of wellbeing ang
part of a company that cares about
their standards.
Fig 5
To encapsulate some heritage, the toilets will be
of an industrially style. (Fig 5)
to complement this theme the lighting will be very
different to that elsewhere in the office, which
not only adds a wow factor, but it becomes a
place of brief escapism from the main offices.
The corridor will still involve the LED linear arc
source, but the toilet space themselves will be of
a totally different look.
The lighting will involve back lit mirrors, (Source
11) which will create a warm, atmosphere, adding
a sense of luxury and calm. The light colour will
be a golden hue which will complement the metal
components in the design. Then to embody the
heritage theme, there will be feature industrial
styled wall lights. (Source 12) These are
uniquely made lights, made from pipes then
painted with a rustic, weathered look- generating
antique style. The bulbs are sustainable LED
lights of a low level lux.
Embodying a industrial style light fixture, this
light combines the best of traditional styling
with its timeless structure and contemporary
aesthetics.
There will be some small recessed led lights
located in each toilet so that the space is not
too dark- the lighting sources discussed
produced low level lux- so more of an additional
decorative ambience than a main source.

Safety- Fire AlarmsFire Alarms
Safety is paramount in the busy work
office environment. We have positioned 17
smoke/heat alarms throughout the two
floors.
The NEST alarms not only look organic
to keep in touch with the lace theme, but
they are also highly specified.
“Nest Protect smoke and carbon
monoxide alarms rapidly detect fires as
well as poisonous carbon monoxide
(short CO) gas leaking from fuel
burning appliances, sounding a loud
warning on all connected Nest alarms
as well as notifying you on your
smartphone. They deploy optical, heat
and humidity sensors to differentiate
between smoke and steam, which
reduces false alarms. The alarms
connect to each other and your smart
phone through Wi-Fi to give you the
earliest possible warning.” (safelinks.co.uk)
