President’s Message

It seems as if each year when I am writing this piece for the fall newsletter, I am doing so on or about September 11. Without fail, this makes me take a minute and think about a number of things that happened 17 years ago and that have happened since.

On September 11, 2001, I was not working at Boston Firefighters Credit Union and it is fair to say that I, like many other Americans, had only a vague awareness of what it is like to be a first responder or to be the family member of someone who goes to work each day not fully knowing what type of situations they may encounter.

Since starting work at BFCU in April 2002, I have obviously met a large number of firefighters from Boston and sur-rounding communities and more recently a number of Boston Police Officers. I now have a far greater understanding of the type of person that accepts the responsibilities of a first responder as either a police officer or a firefighter and am more than ever proud to be part of a financial institution that is solely dedicated to serving those who serve.

Our sole purpose at BFCU is to provide simple and honest banking services to those that have dedicated their lives to serving their fellow citizens. What we do is simple. What we do is not dangerous. However, what we do can be important as a support system for our police and firefighters. Maybe we offer a lending process that is simpler and easier to navigate than our competitors. Maybe we are offering better savings rates than our competitors or maybe we are offering services without an array of expensive and confusing fees. Whatever it is, we do it to be supportive of our first responders and to make one aspect of their lives as easy as possible.

As a board of directors and staff at BFCU, we will always be mindful of who we are and who we serve and we will always remember those public servants who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 as well as all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice doing a job they loved so much.
