Title: Coexistence of Exchange 2007/2010 with Exchange 2013
Created: 7/6/2013
Description:
Microsoft released the updates required to allow Exchange 2013 to be introduced into existing Exchange
2007 and Exchange 2010 environments. Before the release of these updates, customers who had
Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 couldn’t upgrade to Exchange 2013. Exchange 2013 could only be
deployed in customers who didn’t have any prior version of Exchange. In this blog post, I walk-through
the updates required for Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 to have Exchange 2013 introduced and then
walkthrough the deployment of Exchange 2013.
Note: Coexistence with Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2013 is not supported. If you have Exchange
2003, then you will need to upgrade first to Exchange 2007 or 2010 and then upgrade to Exchange 2013.

3.1 Installing Exchange Server 2010 SP3 Download the Service Pack. Review the Release Notes!
Expand the Service Pack.
Install the Service Pack.

3.2 Side Note: Tombstoned Domain Controller I encountered a problem in my lab with my second domain controller. I had been shutdown for a while
and it had gotten “tombstoned” out. Each machine in the domain needs to communicate with the
domain controller periodically. If the machine is down for an extended period of time (I believe 60
days), then that machine will not have a secure channel with the domain controller and its computer
account in the domain will be “tombstoned” out. This means that the other machines in the domain
won’t recognize that machine since it doesn’t have a valid computer account in the domain. I decided
9
to remove the domain controller. To remove the domain controller, I used a tool called metadata
cleanup. See the following article for more information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498
After removing the orphaned domain controller, I was able to get the update installed.
4 Installing Exchange 2013 CU1 After installing the prerequisites, I started building the server for Exchange 2013. To coexist with
Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010, you need to install the CU1 release of Exchange 2013.
Review the Exchange 2013 Prerequisites documentation at: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-
us/library/bb691354(v=exchg.150).aspx
4.1 Get Base OS Installed Exchange 2013 will run on either Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. I decided to
deploy upon Windows 2012 server and built a Windows 2012 virtual machine.
Set the IP address of the machine
Join the machine to the domain
Patch the machine with any Windows Updates
Install the Remote admin tools
10
o In Powershell, execute the following command Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS
Install Windows Prerequisites. This is taken from the Technet net article.

Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy,
RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-
Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-
Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth,

4.2 Install the Exchange Prerequisites Exchange 2013 requires the following components be installed before installing Exchange 2013.
The above updates can be found at:
Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 Runtime (http://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=34992)
Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs (http://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=17062)
Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office Filter Pack 2010 (KB2460041) 64-bit Edition
(http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26604)
4.3 Prepare the Schema setup /PrepareSchema or setup /ps
11
I got an error that the setup process detected an Exchange 2010 without Service Pack 3. This is
interesting that the Exchange 2013 Setup has a blocker and won’t install if it detects Exchange 2010
servers.
I determined that I forgot to upgrade an Exchange 2010 Edge server.
I reran the Exchange prepare schema.
Review the Exchange 2013 article, “Prepare Active Directory and Domains”
