Excerpts from autobiography Up from Slavery by Booker T. Washington

“I cannot remember a single time during my childhood when our entire family sat down for a meal together. The children were fed like animals– it was a piece of bread here and a scrap of meat there” pg. 5.

“Almost every day of my life was devoted to work. As a slave, I was cleaning yards, carrying water to the men in the fields, or going to the mill” p. 8.

“[The slaves] became aware of the great responsibility of being free. They had to provide themselves with a home, care for their children, schools, and churches” p. 14.
