History behind the Islamic calendar

All praise to Allah Subhanahu wa Taala that once again weare entering a new year. Every New Year starts withsplendour and brings with it new hopes, new happiness andnew resolutions. But by the end of it, we feel that we haveachieved nothing. We need to learn from the past years tomake our future years more fruitful. In this book we will look

at some practical ways of attaining this. But first we shallunderstand the concept of months and years in Islam.

As we follow the lunar calendar, let us learn the significanceof the motion of the moon and how it affects us. Allah Taalastates in the Holy Quran:

It is He Who created the sun radiating and the moon shining

and appointed positions for it, for you to know the number of

the years, and the account; Allah has not created it exceptwith the truth; He explains the verses in detail for the people

of knowledge. [Surah Yunus]

They ask you, (O dear Prophet Mohammed Sallallahu Alaihiwa Sallam), regarding the crescents (moon); say, "They are

indicators of time for mankind and for Hajj (the pilgrimage)

In the above verses it is indicated that the movement of themoon helps us establish the system of time, years and alsoits account.

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees! Quran is the complete code of conduct, which

guides us in every aspect of our life. We need to organiseour time in such a way that we can do our day to day

business, worship and also have enough rest. These days wedivide our time according to hours and minutes but in theolden days there were no clocks and no such concept oftime. Then how did people in those days manage their timeand schedule? The answer lies in the Holy Quran whereAllah Taala has guided us that the rotation and revolution ofthe sun and the moon is not only the source of energy andlight but it also helps to determine the time for Hajj and

other purposes. Even the modern concept of time that weuse today is based on the movement of the sun and themoon.

Unfortunately there are people who try to paint Islam as abackward religion. They boast about their developments inscience and technology, but they need to see how Allah

Taala, more than fourteen centuries ago, outlined thepurpose of the sun and moon and highlighted the concept oftime. And in the same way, Quran has provided the basefor all the research and developments that we see today.

After reading briefly about the moon and its significance, itwould be beneficial to look at the system of months in Islam.The twelve months that we know of is not the invention of

any scientist but it is from Allah Taala and it has beencontinuing since the day Allah created the heavens and thelands. Allah Taala states,

Indeed the number of months before Allah is twelve - in the

Book of Allah - since the day He created the heavens and theearth, of which four are sacred; this the straight religion; so

do not wrong yourselves in those months; and constantlyfight against the polytheists as they constantly fight against

you; and know well that Allah is with the pious. [Taubah9:36]

So Which Are Those Four Months?

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique RadiyAllahu Anhu narrates that on

the day of sacrifice, that is the 10th of Zill-Hajj, Rasoolallah

Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam gave a sermon in which he statedthat after a complete cycle, the world has come to itsoriginal position, just as it was on the day the lands andskies were made. The year is made of twelve months, ofwhich four are sacred. Three are consecutive, Zil-Qadah,Zil-Hajj and Muharram-ul-Haram and the fourth is Rajab-ul-Murajjab, which falls between Jamadis-Sani and Shaban-ul-

Muazzam. [Tafseer-e-Mazhari, Tafseer-e-Roohul Bayan]

Why are these months sacred?

The reason for the sacredness of these months is that in

them, the rewards for good deeds are increased; in thesame way the punishment of sins is also multiplied. Thus, inthese months, we need to make extra efforts to do moregood deeds and stay away from all sorts of sins.

Muharram-ul-Haram is an elevated month for variousreasons, but most believers, due to their negligence on the

importance of this month, are deprived of its blessings.Therefore, in this book, we explain the significance of thismonth and outline a way on how to spend it in order for thereader to act accordingly and become worthy of gaining theimmense blessings and rewards hidden in this month.

Even though we use the solar (Christian) calendar for ourday to day business, our worship depends on the lunar

calendar. May it be Fasting, Hajj or the fulfilment of Zakaah,or Iddat of a woman whose husbands dies, in all cases thelunar month should be taken into consideration. It isinteresting to note that because the number of days in a

lunar month is not consistent, the period of worship does notfall in a particular season. Sometimes we may have long fast

of summer and Hajj could fall in winter and vice versa, thusgiving us the benefit of worshipping our Lord in all seasons.

Thus it is Farze Kifayah to witness the moon of each month,which means that it is obligatory for at least some membersof a city or town to witness the moon. And strict guidelinesof Shariah should be followed in this matter as newmeasures are adopted by communities and nations whichcompletely contradict the rules of Shariah. People are keento celebrate Eid on the same day throughout the world, this

is of course desirable, but the laws of Shariah should not becompromised to achieve this.

Now let us learn the names of the twelve Islamic monthsand also teach our children.

1. Muharram

2. Safar3. Rabi ul Awwal4. Rabi ul Aakhir

5. Jamadil Awwal

6. Jamadil Aakhir7. Rajab8. Shabaan

9. Ramadhan

10. Shawwal11. Zil Qadah12. Zil Hajj

At this point it would be worthy to note as to why and whenour Hijri calendar began. It was a custom of the Arabs thatthey would name the year according to any importantincident which took place that year. For example, the year in

which Makkah was attacked by Abrahaa who came todestroy the Holy Kabah, is called Aam ul Feel, meaning theyear of Feel (Feel are the birds sent by Allah Talah todestroy Abrahaa and his army). The year in which HazratKhadija RadiyAllahu Anha and Janab Abu Taalib died isremembered as Aam ul Huzn (the year of mourning). But

there was no number or name to each year which of coursecaused a lot of confusion.

In his era, the second Caliph, Hazrat Umar Farooq e AazamRadiyAllahu Anhu received a letter in which the month wasmentioned but not the year. This caused him to call ameeting with the other companions so that this confusioncould be ended for ever and so that Islamic history could be

preserved correctly. They decided that the year should startwith an important event. Hazrat Ali RadiyAllahu Anhu

advised that the most important even in the lifetime ofRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was his hijrah that

is migration from Makkah to Madinah. They all unanimouslyagreed that the Islalmic year should start from the day ofmigration. But there was a glitch. The first month should beMuharram and the migration did not take place in thatmonth. But Hazrat Usman Gani RadiyAllahu Anhu came upwith a simple solution to leave Muharram as the first monthand backdate the beginning of the Hijri year to the day ofmigraton. Thus the Hijri calendar came into effect on 20th

Jamadil Aakhir 21 Hijri corresponding to 9th July 638 AD.

This shows how important the life of RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam was in the eyes of the companions and alsothe significance of establishing an Islamic system, eventhough a calendar did exist in those days, they establishedan Islamic calendar.

Now let us see how we can make our new year different andbetter than the past years. Here we come up with a plan,which if we follow and stick to, will be beneficial to us in boththe worlds.

1. Establish Salaah. Pray five times every day without fail.Remember, the last act of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu

Anhu was prostration.

2. Reserve some time each day for the recitation of theHoly Quran. And it is also advisable to try and read thetranslation Kanzul Imaan which is available in mostlanguages

3. Whatever occupation you are in, do your job with

sincerity and honesty. Keep your dealings free of lies,deception and keep up with your promises.

4. Do not waste your time. Time is very precious for aMumin. If you do have spare time then read Islamic

books.

5. Always keep good company. Try to be with the learnedand the righteous.

6. Always speak the truth and keep miles away from lies.

7. Always be good to others. Do not hurt anyone with yourwords or action. Always display the best of character.

8. Do not indulge in haram in order to make more

money. Remember, your sustenance is pre-destined.

9. Try to help others but do not be dependant on others.

10.Never use any form of intoxicants.

11.Give enough time to your children and take personal

responsibility and interest in their guidance andupbringing. Apart from worldly knowledge make surethey are also well versed in Islamic knowledge.

12.Always be well-mannered, especially in front of yourchildren because they will pick up your habits. Youshould be their role models and best of friends so thatthey do not look elsewhere.

13.Respect your parents. In no circumstances should youhurt them with your words or behaviour.

14.Basically, obey Allah and His Beloved Rasool SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam and follow all the principles of Islam as

much as you know.Let is all make a resolution to make the upcoming year the

one which can change our lives forever, for the better. Wewill now learn how to welcome the New Year.

How to Welcome Muharram-ul-Haram

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees, it is a general tradition that an eminent andrenowned personality is always welcomed with eagernessand enthusiasm. The sacred months, especially Muharram-ul-Haram, should also be welcomed in the same way. Onthe sighting of the moon of Muharram, we should recite thefollowing prayer in order for the whole year to pass through

peacefully.

O Allah! You are Eternal and Everlasting, this is the newyear and in this I pray to You for protection against Satan

and his associates. I also seek Your help in fighting againstmy desires and to engage myself in acts of worship that will

bring me closer to You. I seek Your help O Merciful One.

The reward of praying this supplication is that the devilssay, Alas! We have lost hope in misguiding him. And twoangels are appointed on the recitor who protect andsafeguard him throughout the year.

Two Rakat Salaah

On the 1st of Muharram pray two rakats with Surah Ikhlas

three times after Surah Fatiha in each rakat. Then pray thisdua:

The author of Jawahir, Aini reports that whosoever prays theSalah mentioned above followed by the dua, then two angels

are appointed for his protection and the devil will have noinfluence over him.

Sayyeduna Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloved

devotees, this month is extremely significant in terms of itsrelation with many Prophets Alaihimus Salaam as well asthe immense rewards gained by worshipping in this month.This month is also related to a very prominent personalitywho the Muslim world knows as Imam Hussain RadiyAllahuAnhu. It was in this month that Imam Hussain RadiyAllahuAnhu endured extreme trials and tribulations with

unmatched patience. His family was destroyed right in front

of him, which he witnessed without a single word ofcomplaint until finally he laid down his own life in the Pathof Allah.

Thus it becomes essential for us to remember Imam

Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu, and to offer rewards, in everypossible manner, to him and all those blessed souls who

sacrificed everything in the Path of Allah. This would be justone way of showing our appreciation towards them. It is

also vital to understand the reason, motive and objectivebehind the great sacrifice of the grandson of RasoolallahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and his family.

We will list some of the virtues of Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu as mentioned in the traditions and will

support them with incidents from his blessed life, in orderto gain guidance as a means to achieve success in this

world and the Hereafter.

Glad Tidings from the Leader of Both Worlds

[Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam]

Hazrat Ummul Fadhl RadiyAllahu Anha, (the aunt ofRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam), narrates that shewent to the court of RasoolAllah and said that during the

night she had seen a dreadful dream. RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam enquired as to what it was, upon whichshe replied that it was very severe (therefore fearedmentioning it). When RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa

Sallam insisted the second time, she said that she saw apart of RasoolAllahs blessed body falling away from hisbody falling on her lap. Upon this RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam said that she had seen a nice dream and it

meant that Allah Taala will bestow his daughter FatimaZehra RadiyAllaha Anha with a son who will be placed inUmmul Fadhls lap. Accordingly, Hazrat Fatima RadiyAllahuAnha gave birth to Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu and he

was given to Ummul Fadhl. [Mishkat Sharif, page 572]

Blessed Birth

Just as the prophecy of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam has stated, Hazrat Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhuwas born in the month of Shabaan-ul-Muazzam in 4 Hijri.There is some difference of opinion regarding the exact

date of birth; it was 3rd, 4th or 5th of Shabaan.RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was extremelyhappy on hearing the news of Imam Hussains birth. Hetook the baby in his arms and gave the Adhaan in his rightear and Iqaamah in his left, and also gave his blessedtongue in his mouth to suck. On the seventh day, hesacrificed two sheep for the Aqeeqah and named hisgrandson as Hussain.

The Blessed Name and Family Lineage

His name was Hussain and kunniyat (nickname or pet-name) was Abu-Abdullah (father of Abdullah). Sibtey

Rasool, Raihanae Rasool, Qurrat-ul-Ain, Sayyid and Tayyibare his titles. His family lineage goes as Hussain son of Ali

son of Abi Talib son of Abdul Muttalib son of Hashim son ofAbde Munaf Qarashi Hashmi.

Blessed Appearance

Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu was so beautiful that theNoor (light) from his blessed face would illuminate the

surroundings. His blessed appearance had a unique

resemblance with that of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam. It is stated in a narration by Hazrat Ali RaduyAllahuAnhu that Imam Hasan RadiyAllahu Anhu was identical withRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam from head to chestand Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu was alike from chestto the feet.

Childhood

Hazrat Abu Hurairah RadiyAllahu Anhu narrates that oncethey were with walking with RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam when he heard Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain

crying. Upon enquiring the reason, Hazrat FatimaRadiyAllahu Anha replied that they are crying due to thirst.RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam asked all thosepresent if they had any water but none had any. He then

asked Hazrat Fatima to give one of the children to him:

He took the child and cuddled him and gave his blessedtongue into the childs mouth. The child sucked it till he was

satisfied and stopped crying. He then did the same with theother child till he too was satisfied and stopped crying.

Riding on the Shoulders of RasoolAllah Sallallahu

Alaihi wa Sallam

Hazrat Osama bin Zaid RadiyAllahu Anhu narrates that onenight I visited RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam andsaw him carrying something on his back which I could not

recognise. When I finished my task I enquired, What areyou carrying Ya RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam?RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam moved the coverand I saw that he was carrying Imam Hasan and Hussain.

He then said, O Allah! These two are my sons and the sonsof my daughter. O Allah! I love them and love those wholove them. [Tirmidhi, Mishkat]

Choose Between Son and Grandson

Once RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was carrying

Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu on his right shoulder andhis son Hazrat Ibrahim RadiyAllahu Anhu on his left. Justthen Hazrat Jibraeel Alaihis Salam arrived and requested,Allah Subhanahu wa Taala will not let both these childrenlive with you and He wants to recall one of them. You canchose whom you want to keep. RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam replied, If Hussain passes away then I willbe hurt as well as Fatima and Ali [RadiyAllahu Anhuma] but

if Ibrahim dies, then only I will suffer the most. And so Iwill prefer Hussain to live. Three days after this incidentoccurred, Hazrat Ibrahim RadiyAllahu Anhu passed away.After that whenever Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu cameto RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, he used to kisshis forehead and say, Welcome O Hussain! I havesacrificed my son upon you. [Shawahidun Nabuwwat]

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam InterruptedHis Speech

Hazrat Buraidah RadiyAllahu Anhu narrates that RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was once delivering a sermon

when Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain arrived walkingplayfully, both wearing red shirts. RasoolAllah Sallallahu

Alaihi wa Sallam came down the pulpit and held them in hishand making them sit near him. He then said, Indeed Allah

has said the truth that your wealth and your children aremeans of testing you. When I saw these two childrenwalking in an unbalanced manner, I could not hold myselfand interrupted my speech to support them.

Support of Hazrat Jibraeel Alaihissalam

One day Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain started towrestle. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam waswatching and saying, Hasan, hold Hussain. Upon hearingthis Hazrat Fatima RadiyAllahu Anha said, Ya RasoolAllah!You are helping Hasan when Hussain is younger.RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam replied, Jibraeel is

helping Hussain. [Shawahidun Nabuwwat]

A villager once came to RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam and gifted him a baby deer. After a short whileImam Hasan arrived upon which RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam gave the baby deer to him. When ImamHussain saw the baby deer he enquired, O brother! Where

did you get that from? Our grandfather gave it to mereplied Imam Hasan. Imam Hussain quickly ran toRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and demanded ababy deer. RasoolAllah tried to console him but ImamHussain would not listen and was close to tears. Just then adeer arrived and said, a villager presented one of mybabies to you and now according to the command fromAllah, I have come to present my second baby for Hussain

as he was asking for it. [Raudhtus Shuhda]

Clothes from Jannah

It is narrated that on the night of Eid, Imam Hasan and

Imam Hussain came to their mother and said, Tomorrow isEid and all the children in Madinah will be dressed up innew clothes. Will the grandchildren of RasoolAllah Sallallahu

Alaihi wa Sallam not wear new clothes? Hazrat FatimaRadiyAllahu Anha was filled with emotions upon hearing the

requests from her children and she promised them thatthey would wear new clothes. Hazrat Fatima, the leader of

the women of Paradise prayed Salaah, and then raised herhands to the Lord of the Worlds and requested, O Allah! Ihave promised my children and now I leave it up to You tofulfil my promise.

Just then she heard a knock on the door. Hazrat Fatimaenquired, Who is it? The tailor of the family of RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam has brought some new clothes

for his children replied the voice from outside. SayyidahFatima dressed the children in them the next morning.When RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam arrived heasked, Do you know where the clothes were from and whobrought them? O Father! I dont know, please tell mereplied Hazrat Fatima. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam said, That was Jibraeel who got the clothes from

Jannah upon the order from Allah Taala. [RaudhtusShuhda]

Who Will Decide?

Hazrat Allama Nusqi Rehmatullahe Alaih narrates that onceImam Hasan and Imam Hussain each wrote something ontwo separate slates. Each one claimed that his handwritingwas better. To get the verdict they went to their fatherHazrat Ali RadiyAllahu Anhu. Hazrat Ali who made majordecisions in his life could not decide on this as he did notwant to hurt either of them, and so he directed themtowards their mother. They went to Hazrat Fatima

RadiyAllahu Anha, who upon seeing the situation, felt thesame as their father and directed them to RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam, the greatest and most exalted decision maker inthe world, did not want to decide in favour of one of themeither, and in turn hurt the feelings of the other. So he said

that the decision will be made by Hazrat Jibraeel AlaihisSalaam. Hazrat Jibraeel soon arrived and said, The

decision will be made by Allah Subhanahu wa Taala and forthat I have brought an apple from Jannah on His

instruction. I will now throw this in the air and whicheverslate it falls on will be the winner. When the apple was

thrown in the air, it split into two halves and one half fell onone slate and the other half on the other, thus deciding thatboth handwritings were equally good. [Nuzhatul Majalis]

Protection By An Angel

One day Hazrat Fatima RadiyAllahu Anha came toRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam in a very distressedstate. Upon seeing this RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam enquired as to the reason. Hazrat Fatima replied

that she could not find both her children. Just then HazratJibraeel arrived and informed RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihiwa Sallam that the children were sleeping at a certain placeand that an Angel was protecting them.

When RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam reached theplace, he saw an Angel who had spread one of his wingsbelow the children whilst covering them with the otherwing. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam then took one

on each shoulder and started to walk. On the way he metHazrat Abu Bakr Siddique RadiyAllahu Anhu who requestedRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam to give one of thechildren to him. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam

smiled and replied, Look, their ride is so exalted and so arethe riders. Upon reaching the Masjid, RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam announced to the companions present

there, Shall I show you the people who are best amongstthe creations? The companions responded, Surely, informus Ya RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam.

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam declared, The

maternal grandparents of these children. The companionstestified. He then continued, I am their maternalgrandfather and Khadijah is their maternal grandmother,

we are the best. Then their parents are best and they areAli and Fatima RadiyAllahu Anhuma. Then their uncle andaunt are the best. Their uncle is Hazrat Jafar and the aunt

is Umme Haani [RadiyAllahu Anhuma]. Then their maternalaunts and maternal uncles are the best. The maternal aunts

are Hazrat Umme Kulsoom, Hazrat Ruqaiyyah and HazratZainab [RadiyAllahu Anhum] and their maternal uncles are

Hazrat Abdullah Tayyib wa Taahir, Hazrat Qasim and HazratIbrahim [RadiyAllahu Anhum]. [Nuzhatul Majalis]

Intelligence of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu

One day Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu had a guest. Afterthe meal the guest asked for something to drink, upon whichImam Hussain enquired as to what drink he would like? Theguest indicated that he wanted a drink which if not available ismore precious than ones life and when one does have it, it isof no value. Imam Hussain told his companions that the guestis referring to water. Those present were astonished with hisintelligence. [Istiqamat, Dec 1979 issue]

Did Not Decline His Wish

Imam Hussain once requested a camel from RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam when he was in the Masjid.Upon hearing the request, RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam went on his hands and knees and rode ImamHussain on his back. Imam Hussain further commentedthat the camels generally have reins and my camel doesseem to have one. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam

gave his blessed hair in his hands. Imam Hussain further

went to say that the camels of Madinah seem to speak. Onthis wish, RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam started tomake noise like that of camels. [Istiqamat, Dec 1979 issue]

Sustenance Is On Its Way

A very poor man came to Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhuand pleaded, O beloved of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa

Sallam, I am a destitute and have nothing to feed myself ormy children, so please give me some of your dinner. ImamHussain reassuringly said, Please sit down and wait, mysustenance is on its way. Soon after a man arrived and

handed over five bags, each bag containing some thousanddinars to Imam Hussain and said, This is from HazratAmeer Muawiyah RadiyAllahu Anhu and he has apologisedthat he sent you so little. He said to use this for now and

more would arrive soon. Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhupresented all the five bags to the poor man and apologisedsaying, Please excuse me for making you wait for this long.

This is all I have for now; hope it will be enough for you.We are the people of trials and we have abandoned ourdesires and forsaken our pleasures.

Exalted Status of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees, the virtues and merits of Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu are highlighted in many narrations, herewe mention just a few in order for us to understand his

high rank in the court of Allah Subhanahu wa Taala and HisBeloved Rasool Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam.

Hussain is from Me

Hazrat Yala bin Murrah RadiyAllahu Anhu reports thatRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said;

Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain.

[Tirmidhi Sharif]

This means that RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam andImam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu are extremely close to

each other as if they are one. The remembrance of ImamHussain is the remembrance of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi

wa Sallam, the friendship of Imam Hussain is the friendshipof RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and the enmity of

Imam Hussain is the animosity of RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam.

In one more tradition Hazrat Abu Hurairah RadiyAllahu

Anhu narrated that RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamsaid about Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain, whosoever

loves these two loves me and whosoever has enmity withthem does so with me. [Madarijun Nubuwwah]

The Most Beloved

Hazrat Anas RadiyAllahu Anhu says:

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was asked about

who was most beloved to him in his family? He answeredHasan and Hussain. He used to ask Hazrat Fatima, bring

my two sons to me. He would then call them close andcuddle them. [Tirmidhi, Mishkat]

The Beloved in the Heavens

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar RadiyAllahu Anhuma was sat

near the Kaaba when he saw Imam Hussain coming. Uponseeing Imam Hussain he remarked:

On this day, he is the most beloved amongst the dwellers

of the earth to the inhabitants of the skies.[Khutbaat e Muharram]

Please Grant Something

Hazrat Fatima RadiyAllahu Anha once brought Imam Hasanand Imam Hussain to RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa

Sallam and requested, Please bestow them withsomething. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamgenerously declared:

For Hasan is my awe and leadership, and for Hussain is mycourage and generosity. [Khutbaat e Muharram]

The Leaders of Paradise

Hazrat Huzaifa RadiyAllahu Anhu once asked permission ofhis mother to visit RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamto appeal to him to pray for their forgiveness. Hazrat

Huzaifa says, I came to RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam and prayed Maghrib behind him. After thatRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam engaged himself involuntary prayers until it was time for Isha. Then we

prayed Isha after which RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam started to walk back from the Masjid. When he

heard me, he said, Is that Huzaifa? I replied, Yes. Whatbrings you here? May Allah forgive you and your mother

Indeed this was an angel who has never visited the earthbefore. He requested permission of Allah Taala to visit me

and convey his salutations and give me the glad tidings

that Fatima is the leader of the women of Paradise andHasan and Hussain are the leaders of the youth ofParadise. [Mishkat]

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri RadiyAllahu Anhu reports that

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said, Imam Hasanand Imam Hussain are the leaders of all the youth of

Paradise. [Tirmidhi]

Sweet Scented

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar RadiyAllahu Anhuma narrates

that RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said:

Hasan and Hussain are Raihaan for me in this world.(Raihaan is a sweet-scented plant) [Tirmidhi, Mishkat]

Martyrdom Was Well-Known

The martyrdom of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu waswell known since his childhood. His blessed parents and

many companions knew that one day he would besacrificed and receive the highest degree of martyrdom.The wife of Hazrat Abbas, Hazrat Ummul Fadhl RadiyAllahuAnhum says, One day I visited RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi

wa Sallam. I saw Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu sitting inhis blessed lap and noticed the constant flow of tears from

the eyes of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. Ipleaded, May my parents be sacrificed upon you Ya

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, what is thematter? He replied:

Jibraeel came to me and informed that one day myUmmah will kill this son of mine. Ummul Fadhl enquired,will they kill Imam Hussain? RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi

wa Sallam confirmed, Yes, and Jibraeel even gave me thesand of the field where he will be martyred. [Mishkat]

Hazrat Anas RadiyAllahu Anhu reports that the Angel of rainasked permission of Allah Taala to pay his respects toRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. When he arrived hesaw Imam Hussain sat in the lap of RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam who was cuddling and kissing him. The

Angel enquired, Hussain is most dear to you? Your Ummahwill one day kill him. If you wish I can show you the fieldwhere he will be sacrificed. The Angel then got some sandfrom the field which Ummul Mumineen Hazrat UmmeSalma RadiyAllahu Anha set aside in a safe place. In onenarration it states that RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam handed over the sand to Hazrat Umme Salma

RadiyAllahu Anha and prophesised, O Umme Salma, when

this sand turns into blood then be certain that my sonHussain has been martyred. Hazrat Umme Salma says, Istored the sand in a bottle and saw that on the day ImamHussain RadiyAllahu Anhu was martyred, it turned toblood.

Hazrat Shabi reports that at the time of the war of Siffin,

he and Hazrat Ali RadiyAllahu Anhu passed through the

plains of Karbala. At the banks of river Euphrates, HazratAli stopped and enquired as to the name of the place.People said that it was called Karbala. As soon as he heardthe word Karbala, a river of tears began to flow from hiseyes which drenched the area around him. Then he said,

Once I came to RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and

saw tears in his eyes. I enquired the reason for it and hereplied, Jibraeel just came to me and informed me:

My son Hussain will be martyred at the banks of riverEuphrates at a place called Karbala and he even showedme the sand from there. [Khutbaat e Muharram]

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees, it is clear from the above narrations that

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam prophesised themartyrdom of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu right fromhis childhood. Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Fatima RadiyAllahuAnhum along with other members of family andcompanions knew that Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu

would one day be killed and even knew where. But none ofthem prayed or requested RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam to pray for Imam Hussain to be protected from this

calamity. This is because they were aware that ImamHussain RadiyAllahu Anhu would be tested and it was moreappropriate to pray for steadfastness in trials, rather thanto be spared from it.

Imam Hussain in the Holy Quran

Mubahila

The excellence of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu is alsoimplied in the Holy Quran in the incident of Mubahila. Letus look at the incident in detail.

The root word of Mubahila is Bahl which means dua,

humbleness, and curse.

Mubahila is practiced to prove a point. When two groupsdo not agree with to each other and all other methods suchas debate fails, then they take the extreme step ofMubahila. Both groups meet at a destined place with theirclose family members and curse each other. Whoever is on

the right is saved and the other group is perished. Mubahilawas only practiced by RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa

Sallam against the unbelievers. Now let us see what theHoly Quran mentions about Mubahila.

Verse Regarding Mubahila

Allah Taala states in the Holy Quran:

Then O beloved! Whoever disputes with you about Isaafter knowledge has come to you, then tell them, 'come, letus call our sons and your sons our women and your women

and our souls and your souls, then let us pray earnestly,

and so lay the curse of Allah upon the liars.(Surah Aal e Imran Verse 61)

This verse was revealed in relation to the Jews of Najraan,

who came to argue with RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam over Hazrat Isa Alaihis Salaam. Najraan is a largewell-established city near Madinah Munawwarah towardsYemen. It has been named after Najraan bin Zaid. This city

was like a headquarter for the Christians with over seventythree villages in its radius of influence. In the city was a

prominent church which the Christians considered as theirQibla and many of their well-known scholars lived there. Ayear before RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam passedaway from this world, a group of about sixty people fromthere came to see him at Madinah Munawwarah. The lordbishop of the time, Abu Harisa was also amongst them.

Twenty four out of the sixty were the cream of theircommunity and out of the twenty four, three were very

significant. One of them was Abdul Maseeh without whoseconsent, his people would not do anything; the other wasthe treasurer who would look after the finances of thecommunity and the third was Abu Harisa who was thehighest ranking scholar amongst them.

They reached Madinah at the time of Asr, wearing the mostelegant clothes ever seen by the people of Madinah. They

went straight to Masjid un Navbi Sharif where people wereoffering their Asr Salaah. They too started praying by

turning towards the west. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam indicated to the companions to let them completetheir prayer. [Tafseer e Naeemi]

Bagwi states that when RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam recited the above Ayah and invited them for mutualimprecation (Mubahila), they hesitated and requested sometime to think over it. Aaqib, who was most intelligent

amongst them said, O brothers in Christianity, you knowvery well that Muhammed Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam is thetrue Prophet. History teaches us that whenever a groupcame face to face with any Prophet for Mubahila, they allperished, and if you chose to do the same then you too willperish. So my advice is to reconcile with MuhammedSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and return home.

Early next morning, RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamleft his house carrying Imam Hussain whilst Imam HasanRadiyAllahu Anhuma was walking holding his finger; HazratFatima RadiyAllahu Anha walking behind him and Hazrat AliRadiyAllahu Anhu was walking behind Hazrat Fatima. So asmentioned in the verse above, RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihiwa Sallam took Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain

RadiyAllahu Anhuma as his sons.

When the Christians saw this sight, one of the scholarscried out, O brothers, I see the faces, which if they raisetheir hands in prayers, the Almighty Lord will movemountains from their places. Therefore do not face the

Prophet and return or else there will be no Christians left onthis earth. [Tafseer e Mazhari]

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees. Ponder the fact that it was decided that for theMubahila, each group would bring their women and childrenwith them. At this point, RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa

Sallam, from all the members of his blessed family choseHazrat Fatima, Hazrat Ali, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain

RadiyAllahu Anhum. Thus the Ummah will alwaysremember Imam Hasan RadiyAllahu Anhu and Imam

Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu as the sons of RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam as he himself called them hissons.

Who Was Yazeed?

Yazeed bin Muawiyah was the unfortunate soul whosehands are stained in the blood of the family of RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. He was an ugly, obese, ill-mannered, alcoholic and evil person. Many prohibited acts

were made legal by him such as marrying to women whoare Mehram and the use of interest, etc.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Hazrat Hanzalah RadiyAllahu Anhuma

reports:

We decided to fight with Yazeed when we feared that dueto his evil practices, we would be bombarded with stones

from the skies as a result of the Wrath of Allah Taala. Hehad allowed unlawful marriages, like marrying ones sister,

drinking alcohol was becoming the norm, and people werenot punctual about Salaat anymore. [Tareekh ul Khulafa]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah RadiyAllahu Anhu, who was one of the

secret bearers of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamused to supplicate to Allah Taala in the following manner in

the year 59 Hijri:

O Allah! Save me from witnessing the year 60 Hijri and the

barbaric rule of the youngsters of Quraish(referring to Yazeed). [Tareekh ul Khulafa]

oath from prominent personalities like Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Hazrat Abu

Bakr, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar and Hazrat Abdullah binZubair RadiyAllahu Anhum Ajmaeen and not to give them

any time to think over it.

As soon as he received this instruction, Waleed invitedImam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu to the governors houseand demanded that he pledge allegiance to Yazeed. ImamHussain was very straightforward in declaring that Yazeed,due to his evil practices and wicked nature, was not fit tobe the leader of the Muslims and that he would not pledge

allegiance to such a person.

Upon learning of the decision of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahuAnhu, Waleed calmly tried to convince him and warned himof the consequences that would follow. But when herealised that Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu was as firmas a mountain on his decision, he advised him to return

home and think carefully over the matter and come againthe next day.

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees. Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu was well awareof the fact that by declining to pledge allegiance to Yazeed,he had made Yazeed his worst enemy, and that he(Yazeed) would now be after his life. But how can it be

possible for the grandson of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam to forsake the path of truth and guidance and agreewith a tyrant, just to protect his own life?

It is clear that if Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu hadpledged allegiance to Yazeed, he would have been very

grateful to Imam Hussain and would have showered himwith gifts and presents, or in fact made him the governor of

a province. But the true Imam knew that if he did so, thenthe system of Islam would be shattered and chaos wouldprevail all over; Islamic principles would be ruined and theglorious flag of Islam would never fly high again as theallegiance of Imam Hussain would have become a stamp of

approval for all that Yazeed did, and people would blindlyfollow him as he would be their leader.

This was the only reason why the grandson of RasoolAllah

Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam chose to face the trials inflictedby the enemy and even had his family sacrificed right infront of his eyes and shed his own blood in order to savethe dwindling and sinking ship of the Ummah.

Setting off from Madinah Munawwarah

Yazeed had planned to first take oath from Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu and once he had achieved this no oneelse would dare to decline pledging allegiance to him. When

Imam Hussain refused, his plans were shattered and hebecame furious. Yazeed sent a message to Waleed that ifImam Hussain did not agree to pledge allegiance to him, heshould be killed and his head sent to Yazeed. When Waleed

received a number of such messages, he was compelled todisclose the evil plans of Yazeed to Imam Hussain. ImamHussain took some advice from the companions anddecided to leave Madinah.

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees. We can only imagine the state of Imam Hussainwhen he must have paid his final respects to his

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. With a mountain ofgrief on his heart and tears flowing from his eyes, he musthave cried, O grandfather, who rode us on his shoulder,

who kissed our forehead and cuddled us, who extended hisprostrations for us, look at our state. We are being forcedto leave the most beloved land by some evil men, pleasepermit us to leave, Ya RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam.

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees. What must the state of RasoolAllah Sallallahu

Alaihi wa Sallam himself been when he was witnessing thedeparture of the one who was nurtured by his love, thebeloved son of his beloved daughter. After all it was Imam

Hussain, due to whom RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam sacrificed his own son. Even the slightest

displeasure felt by Imam Hussain would upset and grieveRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. These are the

thoughts which upset, disturb and grieve the hearts ofthose who truly love RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamand his blessed family.

It is stated in Raudatus Shuhda that Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu first visited Jannatul Baqi to pay hisrespects to his blessed mother Sayyeda Fatima and hisbrother Imam Hasan, and then went to the blessed Rauda

of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. After offering hissalutations and confiding in RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam about his situation, he fell asleep. In his dream,RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was holding hishead in his lap. Imam Hussain urged, Ya RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, I am being forced to leave yourblessed city by some evil elements and I feel I will never be

able to come here again. RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam replied, Soon you will join me and I see that youare being mercilessly killed in Karbala in a desperate stateof hunger and thirst. O Hussain, be steadfast andaccomplish your task. It wont be long before you join yourfather, mother and brother when you will be sitting with usenjoying the immeasurable bounties of your Merciful Lord.At this point, Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu woke up and

he became certain that his martyrdom was near.

Hence, on the 4th of Shabaan, 60 Hijri, he set off towardsMakkah Mukarramah with his family and companions,leaving the people of Madinah grieving on his departure.After reaching Makkah in Shabaan, he lived peacefully for

the following four months of Ramadhan, Shawwal, ZilQadah and Zil-Hajj. The people of Makkah were very proud

and pleased that the grandson of RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam was living amongst them.

Saeed bin Aas was the governor of Makkah who wasappointed by Yazeed. Upon seeing the arrival of Imam

Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu and realising his growingimportance, he cautioned Yazeed, which frustrated him

even more.

Requests from the People of Kufa and the Departure of

Imam Muslim

In the period of his stay in Makkah, Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu received about 150 letters from thepeople of Kufa, in which he was invited to go and live in

Kufa. The inhabitants there were eagerly waiting to pledgeallegiance to him as they did not want to make a tyranttheir leader.

Hazrat Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu, upon seeing thedesperate state of the people of Kufa, decided to go there.Many companions of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamadvised him against going there as history had shown that

the people of Kufa were very disloyal and could not betrusted. But Imam Hussain was extremely concerned aboutthe state of people and so he sent Imam Muslim to gatherfirst hand information about the situation there.

Imam Muslim accompanied by his two children reachedKufa and received an overwhelming welcome from thepeople of Kufa. Soon over twelve thousand people took an

oath at his hands on the name of Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu. Imam Muslim wrote to Imam Hussaindescribing the situation and the support that he had from

the people of Kufa.

Betrayal of the People of Kufa

and the Martyrdom of Imam Muslim

When this news reached Yazeed, he appointed Ubaidullahbin Ziyad as the governor of Kufa, before which he was thegovernor of Basra. Ubaidullah was a very shrewd and cruelcharacter. As soon as he arrived in Kufa he threatened thepeople of Kufa that if they did not stop supporting Imam

Muslim, they would be thrown behind bars or killed andYazeeds army would attack their houses, destroy them and

massacre their families.

On receiving these threats, the people of Kufa began toabandon Imam Muslim and soon he had no followers. SoonUbaidullah sent an army to fight Imam Muslim, who single-handed fought fearlessly with extreme courage and facedthe swords and arrows of the army until finally his head hita stone and his body was drenched in blood. He fell on theground and turning his face towards Makkah cried, Obrother Hussain bin Ali, look what these people have done

to me and I fear that they might do the same to you, buthow can I let you know and stop you from coming here?

In the end, Imam Muslim was captured and brought beforeUbaidullah who ruthlessly killed him. Inna Lillahi wa InnaIlaihi Rajioon.

Martyrdom of the Two Sons of Imam Muslim

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees. After killing Imam Muslim, the oppressors startedto look for his children. Ubaidullah announced that whoever

brought the two children to him would receive a heftyreward, and the one who gave them refuge would be killed.They were living with Qazi Shareeh, who when he heardthe announcement from Ubaidullah called for the twoorphans and began to sob. The children pleaded to knowthe reason and asked if their father had been killed. Whenhe confirmed the news, they hugged each other and beganto grieve.

In the middle of night, Qazi Shareeh arranged for thechildren to join a caravan which was on its way to Madinah.Due to the darkness of night, the two children got lostbefore reaching the caravan. In the morning they sat at theside of a pond and were spotted by a slave-woman who

recognised them. The slave woman took them to herowner. The owner was a very pious lady and loyal to the

Ahle Bait (family of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam). She was so pleased to have the children that she

freed the slave and engaged herself in serving the children.But her husband Haaris was just the opposite and was

looking for the children so that he could hand them over toUbaidullah and earn the reward. He came home and wentto sleep unaware that the children were in the house. But inthe middle of night he was woken up by a loud cry. Theelder brother woke the younger one and said, This is notthe night to sleep, I just saw our grandfather, RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, in Jannah with Hazrat FatimaRadiyAllahu Anha and Hazrat Ali RadiyAllahu Anhu. I also

our beloved father and we too were present with them.Then RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam looked at usand said to our father, O Muslim, you have come on yourown and left your two oppressed children behind? ImamMuslim replied, Ya RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam!They will soon join us and will be here by tomorrow. Sobrother it seems we too will soon be martyred.

When Haaris spotted them he enquired to his wife as towhom they were. His wife was too scared to speak so heasked the children themselves. They fearlessly revealedtheir identity. The cruel man grabbed their hair and pulledthem outside the house. The children were crying due tothe pain and agony. He then loaded them on a mule androde them to the banks of river Euphrates. There he

aligned them and removed his sword but his wife, who hadbeen following them, came in between and pleaded withhim to change his mind and not stain his hands with theblood of the Ahle Bait.

But the devil was riding on Haaris and in a rage of fury he

attacked his wife who fell on the ground. He then turnedtowards the children. As soon as he was about to attack the

younger brother, the elder brother cried and demandedthat he should be killed first so he would not have to seehis younger brother dying. The same words were repeatedby the younger brother. But nothing could move the stone-

hearted monster and he finally killed them both. Inna Lillahwa Inna Ilaihi Rajioon.

Departure of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu

On receiving the letter from Imam Muslim, Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu was convinced that it was safe to leaveand he sat off towards Kufa with 72 family members andassociates. On the way he learnt about the death of Imam

Muslim and also about the disloyal nature of the people of

Kufa.

When Kufa was only a short distance away, Hurr binRiyaahi came with an army of one thousand soldiers andsaid, I am under orders from Ubaidullah to arrest you. Butbecause I respect you, I advise you to turn back. ImamHussain started to move from there at night but by

morning they were in a desolate plain called Karbala. Imam

Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu dismounted from his ride andsaid:

This is Karbala, the place of pains and trials. This is whereour camels will sit, this is where we will get down, and this

is where my family will be sacrificed.

The day was Thursday the 2nd of Muharram, 61 Hijri.

Ubaidullah sent a large army who surrounded the camp ofImam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu and stopped water onthem from the river Euphrates. Allahu Akbar! The grandsonof the Master of the Pond of Kausar Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam had the water stopped upon him and his family.

Thousands of troops surrounded them, only a small groupof people consisting of women and children. Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu is left with two gruesome choices; to

pledge allegiance to Yazeed or to die. But Imam Hussain,who was an embodiment of patience and endurance, choseto die but decided not to give his hand to the tyrantYazeed.

The Sermon of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu

My beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallams beloveddevotees. When Imam Hussain realised that the enemieswould not settle for anything less than his head, hegathered all his family members and associates and said, Iwillingly give you consent to leave me and return and notwaste your life over me. I will still be pleased with you. Butthe companions disagreed and said emotionally, There is

no question of us turning back and deserting you. We will

fight for you with our hands, our necks and our foreheadsuntil we lay down our lives for you.

After that, they prayed their Salah and spent their nights inremembrance, whilst also digging a trench behind thecamps so that it could be filled with burning wood to avoidthe enemies attacking from behind.

The Night of Aashura

The night before the war was spent in the remembrance ofAllah and His beloved RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam by Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu. He did notseem to be threatened by the whispers of war nor was heanxious about his fate. In fact he was under the Mercy ofAllah Taala with serenity and tranquillity shrouding over

him. He then saw RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamwho was present in the field in the midst of angels.RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam came closer to hughim and said, O son! Your enemies are striving to kill you,but they will be deprived of my intercession on the day ofQayamah. O Son! Do not be impatient, very soon you willjoin me and I will present you with a drink from the Pond ofKausar. Then he prayed for him in these words:

O Allah! Bestow Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu with patienceand reward.

The Morning of Martyrdom.

The night of Aashura passed by and the dawn of a decisiveday broke out. Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu led the Fajrprayers. The situation was such that they were sufferingfrom the pangs of hunger and thirst for the past three days,no one had even a morsel of food or a drop of water. Andto fight such people is an army of twenty-two thousandsoldiers who had no shortage of food, water or arms!

The sun was about to rise when the beloved grandson ofRasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, the lion of HazratFatima and Hazrat Ali, rode towards the camp of theenemies to give them a final warning with his wise wordswhich have been recorded in golden letters in our glorioushistory. O people! Listen to me and do not haste so that Ican complete my duty of cautioning you, and to tell you the

purpose of my journey here. Thus if you agree with me and

testify the truth then this will be a means of eternalpleasure for you and you will lose nothing. But if youdisagree with me, then gather all those who agree with youand attack me. Indeed Allah is my helper, the One who hasrevealed the Book and the One who is the aide of therighteous.

Do you recognise who I am? Then ask yourself is it right foryou to kill me? Am I not the grandson of your Prophet?And am I not a son of his associate? Is the leader of theMartyrs, Sayyeduna Hamza and Sayyeduna Jaffer Tayyarnot my fathers uncles? Has the narration of RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam not reached you that me andmy brother are the leaders of the youth of Jannah?

Thus, if you agree then testify it. By Allah! Since the day Ilearnt that lying causes the displeasure of Allah, I havenever lied. And if you think that I am lying then ask peoplelike Jabir bin Abdullah, Abu Saeed Khudri, Suhail bin Saad,Zaid bin Arqam and Anas bin Malik.

These companions of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam will tell what he had said. Is there no one amongst

you who can deter you from shedding my blood? If youthink I am lying or doubt that I am the grandson of

RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam then by Allah,between East and West there is no one else who can claimto be the grandson of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam.

After all why do you want to kill me? Have I killed any oneof you? Or have I seized your wealth? Why do you want toshed my blood? [Istiqamat December 1979, Reference from

After he received no response from the enemies, he namedsome of the people who had written letters to him invitinghim to Kufa and asking them, Did you not invite me? Theyanswered in the negative.

He continued, You surely did. And if you say you did notthen let me leave and return to where I can live in peace.Qais bin Ashab shouted, Submit yourself to Ubaidullah andno one will hurt you.

The Imam replied, You would say that, as you are thebrother of Muhammed bin Ashab. Is it not enough that you

have the burden of killing Muslim bin Aqeel upon yourheads? By Allah! I will not give my hands to the tyrants norwill I surrender myself with humiliation.

Dreadful Martyrdoms

The speech of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu, which hemade to clarify his position and to clear any doubts in theminds of the enemies, did not have any effect on them. Infact, they declared the beginning of war and started to firearrows. This was indeed a very crucial moment for ImamHussain RadiyAllahu Anhu and his followers. One by onethey pounded upon their enemies sending scores into the

fire of Hell before themselves smelling the sweet fragrance

of martyrdom. After the companions it was the time of thefamily of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu to offer theirsacrifices. The two grandsons of Hazrat Jaffer Tayyar,Hazrat Aun and Hazrat Muhammed, Hazrat Muslim binAqeels three brothers Hazrat Abdullah, HazratAbdurrahman and Hazrat Jaffer, Hazrat Alis five sonsHazrat Abbas, Hazrat Usman, Hazrat Abdullah, Hazrat

Muhammed and Hazrat Jaffer one by one gave their lives to

uphold the flag of Islam. In the same way, Hazrat ImamHasans sons, Hazrat Qasim, Hazrat Abdullah, Hazrat Umarand Hazrat Abu Bakr, and Imam Hussain RadiyAllahuAnhus sons Hazrat Ali Akbar and Hazrat Ali Asghar soonfollowed. RadiyAllahu Anhum Ajmaeen

The Martyrdom of the Son of Imam Hasan RadiyAllahu

Anhu

The blossoming flower from the Hashmi garden, HazratQasim, the son of Imam Hasan is only nineteen years old.He is stood in front of Imam Hussain in a very respectfulmanner. Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu enquired, Whatis the matter Qasim. He replied , When my father wasdying he gave me am amulet (Taweez) and instructed methat there will be a time when my brother Hussain will be in

great trouble, open this Taweez, read it and act upon it.Which time can be more crucial than this? So I opened theTaweez and it says, Dear son, In the battle of Karbalawhen the time comes, do not let Ali Akbar go to fight beforeyou, but instead you go first and sacrifice your life in the

way of Allah. O uncle! I have come to ask permission so Ican fulfil my fathers last wish. Imam Hussain fighting his

tears said, Seeing you revives the memories of mybrother. How can I permit you to go and be killed? Hazrat

Qasim pleaded, O uncle, if I dont go, and if Ali Akbar ismartyred before me then what face will I show to my fatheron the Day of Judgement? When Hazrat Qasim RadiyAllahuAnhu insisted, Imam Hussain permitted him with a heavyheart and with tearful eyes bid him farewell.

A soldier from the enemy ranks, Hameed bin Muslim states,When Hazrat Qasim came forward it felt like a moon had

risen from the horizon. He had no armour on his body andwas eagerly seeking martyrdom. He challenged the Yazeediforces, O enemies of Islam, I am Qasim bin Hasan bin Ali,one of the lights from the family of RasoolAllah SallallahuAlaihi wa Sallam. Send whomever you choose to fight me.

Amr bin Saad instructed a heavyweight fighter named

Arzaq to accept the challenge, but he declined saying that itwas not worthy of him to fight a child. Amr reiterated,Dont take him as a child; he is the son of Hasan who isthe son of Ali, who single-handedly uprooted the door ofthe fort of Khyber. Though he has been starving for threedays, fighting him will not be easy. Arzaq was adamantthat he would not go and instead sent his eldest sonthinking he would settle the score in minutes. But, in

minutes the situation was reversed and Arzaqs son waslying on the ground dying and Hazrat Qasim had his sword.His second son became furious and went to take on HazratQasim but he too fell prey to the very first attack by HazratQasim and was sent to Hell. Now the third brother jumpedto fight using foul language. Hazrat Qasim said, It is not

the way of the Ahle Bait to respond to foul language withfoul language; instead I will send you to your brothers. In

one shot he was cut into two pieces. The fourth and lastson of Arzaq soon met the same fate also.

Arzaq was now trembling with rage and fear. All his pridewas turned to dust. He was now forced to face the Hashmi

lion. He entered the field with a roar throwing emptychallenges like, Be ready to die. Hazrat Qasim replied,

You have lost your senses Arzaq, we are the blood of thelion of Allah, you are nothing compared to us. They

attacked each other with spears but both shots were off themark. Then the swords were drawn out. When the fightingbegan, Hazrat Qasim laughed at Arzaq and said, You didnot even remember to tighten the rein of your horse due tothe fear of fighting me. As soon as Arzaq bent down to lookat the rein, Hazrat Qasim struck a final blow cutting himinto two pieces.

Hazrat Qasim mounted the horse and sped towards thecamp of Imam Hussain expressing, O uncle! Thirst thirst. IfI can get one bowl of water, I will send all the enemies toHell. Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu replied, Just a littlelonger my son, soon you will see your grandfather who willgive you a drink from the Pond of Kausar, after which youwill never be thirsty again. Hazrat Qasim returned to the

battlefield. Amr shouted to his people, Surround and killhim. Hazrat Qasim was surrounded by enemies from allsides, but he did not give up. He fought fiercely and hadtwenty seven wounds on his body until finally Sheesh binSaad pierced a spear through his chest. As he was fallingfrom the horse, he was saying, O uncle! Come and attendto me.

When Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu heard his cries, heran towards him and found that the young body wascovered with wounds. He took Hazrat Qasim RadiyAllahuAnhus head in his lap and started to clean the dust from it.Hazrat Qasim opened his eyes to find his head in Imamslap. He smiled and with that his blessed soul left his body.

The Martyrdom of the Flag Bearer

The flag bearer of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu, HazratAbbas bin Ali RadiyAllahu Anhuma, approached him and

asked for permission to fight. He further said, I can nolonger bear to see Ali Asghar and other infants who are

dying of thirst. Please allow me to go and get a bag ofwater from the river. Imam Hussain responded, How can I

allow you to go as you are the bearer of my flag? ButHazrat Abbas repeated his words and insisted to be allowedto go. Imam Hussain hugged him and gave him permission.Hazrat Abbas mounted a horse and started towards theriver. When the enemies saw Hazrat Abbas approaching theriver, they blocked his path. Hazrat Abbas shouted, OKufans! Be fearful of Allah and be ashamed of having toface RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. It is so

regrettable that firstly you invited Imam Hussain and thenbetrayed him. And now you have joined with his enemiesand killed his companions and family members. And if thatwas not enough, you are torturing young children andinfants from the family of RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi waSallam, not allowing them even a single drop of water sothat they would die of hunger and thirst. Just think, what

face will you show RasoolAllah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallamon the Day of Reckoning? But the treacherous souls repliedthat if the whole world was filled with water, still he wouldnot get a drop from it. Hazrat Abbas became agitated androared like a lion, Hussain will sacrifice himself but willnever surrender to the evil tyrants.

The evil forces attacked from all sides but Hazrat Abbas

kept moving forward until he took his horse into the river.He filled his water-bag and was about to have a sip whenhe remembered the thirst of the children in the camps. Hecould not tolerate the fact that he would quench his thirstwhereas the blessed children from the family of RasoolAllahSallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam would remain thirsty. He hung

the water-bag on his shoulder and rode towards the camp.There was an uproar, Stop him, stop him. If this water

reaches the camp of Hussain then none of us will survive.

Though he was attacked from all sides, Hazrat Abbaswanted to reach the camp at all costs, so he attacked sofiercely that bodies were falling in each direction and

streams of blood was flowing on the ground. Just then hewas deceptively attacked from behind by a man called

Zararah, due to which his right shoulder was cut off fromhis body. He took the water-bag in his left hand and also

fought with the same hand. He was further attacked byNaufil bin Arzaq and this time his left hand was separatedfrom his body. Now he held the water-bag in his mouth butthe water was not to reach the camp. An arrow struck thebag and all the water was lost. Soon he succumbed to theconstant attack and fell to the ground calling, O brother!Attend to me.

Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu ran towards him andfound his body soaked in blood and he was very close toattaining martyrdom. Seeing this state Imam Hussain criedout, Now my back is broken. Soon the soul left the bodyand Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu carried the body backto the camp. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajioon. [TareekheKarbala]

The Courage of Hazrat Ali Akbar RadiyAllahu Anh

All the companions and family members of Imam HussainRadiyAllahu Anhu had now attained martyrdom and he was

left alone with his three sons; Imam Zainul Aabideen,Hazrat Ali Akbar and Hazrat Ali Asghar RadiyAllahu Anhum.Hazrat Zainul Aabideen RadiyAllahu Anhu was very ill,Hazrat Ali Asghar was still an infant and Hazrat Ali Akbarwas eighteen years old. So Imam Hussain RadiyAllahuAnhu decided that he should now enter the battlefield. ButHazrat Ali Akbar stopped his way and pleaded, O belovedfather! How can you go to fight when I am still alive?

Please allow me to go and fight. Imam Hussain looked athim with tearful eyes and said, With what heart can I allowyou to go? How can I see you covered in dust and blood?The Yazeedi army want my blood and once they kill me,they wont bother with you. But Hazrat Ali Akbar would notlisten. Ultimately Imam Hussain had to allow him to go and

fight.

Hazrat Ali Asghar and the Unimaginable Torture

The youngest son of Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu,Hazrat Ali Asghar RadiyAllahu Anhu was still an infant; hewas dying of thirst and was the subject of the extremetorture from the people of Yazeed who had stopped watersince the 7th of Muharram. The breasts of the mothers hadalso dried up and there was not a single drop of wateranywhere in the camp. Hazrat Ali Asghar would become

unconscious at short intervals, and when he would regain

consciousness he would pull his tongue out to his mother.When his mother could not bear to see him in this state,she brought him over to Imam Hussain and pleaded,Please carry him outside, maybe the enemies will showsome mercy towards this infant of six months and give himsome drops of water as this infant will neither fight themnot stand up against them.

Imam Hussain RadiyAllahu Anhu carried the baby towardsthe enemies and said, O people who pray the Kalima of mygrandfather. You have destroyed my whole family to satisfyyour greed and anger, but this infant has not wronged youat all. If you have any mercy in your hearts, then give himjust two drops of water. But the stone-hearted wretched

souls were not to be moved by anything. In fact, one ofthem aimed at the dry neck of the baby and shot an arrowwhich passed through the neck and into the shoulder ofImam Hussain. A fountain of blood oozed out of the neckwhen the arrow was pulled out and the thirsty infant died inthe hands of his blessed father. Inna Lillahi wa Inna IlaihiRajioon.

When the Imam walked towards the camp, the motherthought that Ali Asghar had been given water as he was notcrying.
