lluminated by love and devotion, Herb Estrin’s

face lights up when he talks about his family.

Retired after 50 years of hard work in the food

business, he can now focus his time and attention on

what was always his greatest inspiration in business—

the people he cares about most. Wife Rosalia, daughter

Maritza and grandchildren Free and Noah are now the

center of his life.

Herb entered the workforce at 12 years of age, workingin his parents’ delicatessen near Columbia University. Hesoon became an important part of the staff, as his fathergrew increasingly debilitated from what would becomea fatal brain tumor. Herb shouldered responsibilities beyond his years, toiling beside his mother and brother.Eventually, the original store expanded to become agourmet deli, and the family added a supermarket. “It wasa seven-day-a-week business,” said Herb, who welcomedretirement in 2003 with a smile.

Herb took on an additional opportunity and challengewhen he became the administrator of his family’s charitable foundation after the death of his brother fromcancer in 1996. Since then, Herb has overseen the distri-bution of the foundation’s assets to various causes.

An intensely personal moment in his life was the impetusfor his first gift to Englewood Hospital in 2008. Deeply involved in the care of his wife’s elderly mother, Herb witnessed first-hand the exceptional level of care the frail woman received in the emergency department. “I was very impressed. They really cared. They were veryprofessional, and they took care of her right away,” he remembers.

A man who knows the value of a job well done, Herbshowed his appreciation and gratitude by promptly, andquite unexpectedly, visiting the offices of EnglewoodHospital and Medical Center Foundation to make his firstgift to the Hospital. “It’s a pleasure to be able to give, especially when I have seen the results of the dedicationof the caregivers at Englewood Hospital.”

The Leslie Simon Breast Care and CytodiagnosisCenter, a model for breast care centers aroundthe world, expanded its highly acclaimed complement of humanistic state-of-the-art carewith the implementation of the American Cancer Society’s Patient Navigator Program. A total of 517 breast cancer patients, most of whom were contacted within a week of diagnosis, received emotional support, valuable information and assistance with accessing

on Lefcourt’s desk, an Italian dining table,

is covered with carefully arranged piles of

paperwork and other materials to review.

By design there are no drawers, a choice based on the

suggestion of a mentor who advised him many

years ago that a traditional desk presented too many

opportunities for work to hide and be lost. “This desk

is a work in progress,” said Ron, who can easily identify

and select files.

The son of a musician and a homemaker, the remarkablysuccessful businessman grew up in Astoria in Queens,New York without any particular professional expecta-tions for life. “Nobody in my neighborhood was going tocollege,” he said. But, what began as an after-school job in Manhattan as a teenager evolved into a notable 45-year-long career in the transportation business.

“I wasn’t programmed by my parents to achieve what I have accomplished in life. I attribute my success to thetimes in which I grew up—people worked hard, theywere respectful, nothing came easy to anyone, familyhelped family.” Before the days of television, when radiowas king, even entertainment required initiative and effort. “You had to listen and use your imagination.”

Giving to Englewood Hospital has been his way of supporting not just his local Hospital, but the place he’scome to know personally for its exceptional care, first experienced during quadruple bypass surgery in 2005. Ron reached out with a generous financial gift, the first of several over the years, as a way of showing his appreciation and gratitude.

A commemorative plaque in the new emergency carecenter in memory of his beloved wife, Helen, marks this donation and Ron’s commitment to a place of exceptional care and caring. “I liked everything about Englewood Hospital, from my doctors and nurses all theway to the woman who runs the valet parking.”

The Heart and Vascular Institute celebrated tenexceptionally successful years as a pioneer in cardiac care. The program, which began as a special state-sanctioned endeavor incorporatingthe standards of transfusion-free medicine andbloodless surgery, has been recognized for itsoutstanding survival rate for isolated coronaryartery bypass surgery (100% for the most recentfour years studied by New Jersey) and leading

results in the treatment of heart attack victims, among other indicators of superior care. The Hospital received the HealthGrades 5-star ratingin two categories pertaining to cardiac care, including Coronary Bypass Surgery and Treat-ment of Heart Attack. It was also recognized forservice excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program for“An Outstanding Cardiovascular Experience.”

A total of 46,110 patient visits to the emergencycare center was recorded, representing an increase of six percent for the year. Numerous acknowledgments marked the great success ofthe first full year of the new facility. The emergency medicine program was recognizedfor service excellence under the J.D. priorities, Allison and John Paul DiStaulo

seem to be like many other couples. Two

growing children, a beautiful new home, a family

business and valued relationships with loved ones and

friends inform their decisions every day. However, one

choice, made with care and caring, sets them apart from

many others. Allison and John Paul are among the gen-

erous individuals who donate to Englewood Hospital.

Raised in Bergen County, John Paul grew up knowing his family could count on the Hospital. Even before its expansion, the Hospital was a comforting sight on EngleStreet, a symbol of the quality care inside. The couple paidthe Hospital the ultimate compliment, choosing it for thebirth of their daughters, Amanda and Sofia, now 14 and12 years old.

A pivotal moment in 2003 would be the first step in making Englewood Hospital Allison and John Paul’s toppriority for charitable giving. “When my mother, SerafinaDiStaulo, died, the family wanted to honor her memoryby doing something to benefit the community, so weasked for donations to Englewood Hospital in lieu of flowers,” said John Paul, who with his brothers matchedthe total value of the gifts. Since then, Allison and JohnPaul have been loyal donors, and she has joined TheBreakfast Club, an auxiliary that gains friends and fundsfor the Hospital. Previously, Allison had been touched byher experiences as a volunteer. “Even the affectionate waypatients said goodbye to staff was special,” she said.

Allison and John Paul’s support of the Hospital has been inspired by their desire to further the cause of aninstitution that is essential to making their community anoutstanding place to live. As someone whose construc-tion and real estate business has helped shape manytowns in the area, he knows the importance of the availability of top-rated medical care. “Great healthcare ispart of an exceptional community,” said John Paul. “All ofthat is a wonderful thing to support.”

Physicians and nurses were recognized for thehigh quality of their work on numerous occa-sions. More physicians from the Hospital thanany other in the state were named in New Yorkmagazine’s “Best Doctors” issue (June 14, 2010).Physicians were selected by their peers, who

looking the Hudson. “If you could look around

the corner, you would see the Statue of Liberty,” she is

pleased to point out. Vivacious and gracious, Juliane

has a wonderful zest for life and a desire to share her

own happiness that is immediately apparent.

Juliane grew up in Austria in a family not rich in worldlypossessions, but infused with strong values and high expectations for life. “My mother insisted we all get an education and do something with our lives.” Julianemoved to the United States as an adult and worked in the fashion industry, eventually becoming mom to ablended family of seven children, now 28 to 55 years old. Life presented its challenges, but the rewards have been great. “I am blessed. I am privileged,” she repeatsemphatically and often. When her already comfortable

circumstances became even more abundant, she discov-ered the joys of philanthropy. Her life today is replete withpeople she cares about, a remarkable enthusiasm foreach new day and a commitment to charitable giving.

It was her move to New Jersey a few years ago to becloser to the family members she loves so dearly, and ofwhom she is extraordinarily proud, that brought Julianeand Englewood Hospital together. She made her first donation after a positive experience with a routine mammogram. “That day, I picked up a brochure aboutthe Hospital and its need for private funding,” she said. That first gift was soon followed by others, includingthose for nursing scholarships at the Hospital. “I knowfrom experience the value of caring, qualified nurses, and I saw a powerful opportunity to help dedicated individuals who want to be nurses,” she explained. “Thisis my way of sharing my blessings and supporting a causethat’s important to me.”

Some of the most remarkable and successful works of art are

collaborations — where the results are unexpectedly greater

than the sum of their parts. Here at Englewood Hospital, the

art of excellence is just such a meeting of minds and hearts,

depending on the strength, creativity and devotion of many

caring souls. Together, we form what can truly be considered

a work of art — a powerful, nurturing entity that provides for

the health and wellness of all in need. Won’t you renew your

commitment as an Ambassador of Excellence by making a

donation today? With your help and support, this excellence

will continue. Please give as generously as you can — you can

be sure that your gift makes a difference.
