EXCEL Leadership Program for Greene County
Individuals that enroll in the Greene County MU Extension EXCEL Leadership Program will be required to earn a set number of points to graduate the program but this can be done at your own pace.
Various county and extension programs and events provide a different amount points. The goal is to 1) expose participants to the people and issues of Greene County and 2) to provide practical opportunities to develop leadership skills for the benefit of their community and even employer.
Program participants will be regularly updated on upcoming programs via an emailed newsletter to program participants and alumni. As events are developed and scheduled, program participants will be notified. Participants will have a menu of options from which to pick and up to three years to complete the program.
Thanks to a grant and sponsors like the Greene County Commission, the EXCEL program does not have an enrollment fee. Some mater ials and trainings are provided free-of-charge. Some events where leadership points could be earned do have registration fees.
We will offer various leadership trainings and programs and an EXCEL graduation where class graduates will be recognized formally. We plan to host events for EXCEL alumni or involving alumni in other events too as part of ongoing professional development.
EXCEL program participants MUST:
Earn 250 points to graduate. ____
Register for the program and sign program ethics and participation agreement. (Enrollment can occur at any time and should be done online). ______
Complete the “ Community Assessment Guiding Questions” survey about the needs of your community ______
Attend the required EXCEL leadership classes (applies to programs like Ash Grove EXCEL and employee EXCEL programs). _______
Complete a community project or 4-H Spin Leadership Club as coordinator or in partnership with a team member, extension personnel or community leader. ______
Write a letter to the editor to the Greene County Commonwealth newspaper or Springfield News-Leader about a community issue. _____ (copy of published letter/column required)

Events and trainings that will help them understand the issues in Greene County and the
communities that make up this county.
An alumni network of program participants from whom to learn and connect.
A framed certificate upon graduation from the program. (Announcement to their employer.)

____ Participate in the Greene County Commission Ag Tour (if seats are available). — (15 points)

____ Work on (or assist with) a previous EXCEL project with an EXCEL alum. — (20 points)
____ Learn about a different ethic group or religion in Greene County and write about the experience.
Examples: attend a cultural festival, service of a different religion, or museum. — (20 points)
____ Attend MU Extension Leadership Event at the Capital in Jefferson City. — (20 points)

____ Attend a David Novack Leadership Series at Mizzou in Columbia. — (25 points)
____ Help coordinate a “Betterment Night” event in Ash Grove, Willard, Walnut Grove, Republic, Fair
Grove, Strafford or Rogersville. These events will focus on needs in the community, county resources,
and non-profits in that community and opportunities to volunteer locally. — (25 points)
____Volunteer 10 hours with a local community non-profit and document it. — (25 points)
____ Enroll and attend a four-part Brown Bag University class from MU Extension — (25 points)

____ Create, implement and report on an approved community project. —(75 points)
____ Attend a Supervisory Certificate Program conducted by MU Extension. — (40 points)

____ Host a leadership round table discussions in your community involving the mayor and council
members or other community leaders and members on community needs or leadership. - (50 points)
____ Organize a 4-H SPIN Club focused on leadership. SPIN Clubs meet just 6—8 times and focus on
a special topic of interest. Must complete the needed 4-H paperwork. — (75 points)

IMPACT REPORT ON EXCEL
The following items would be considered significant impacts of EXCEL in Greene County
since 2017.
Class member pursued answers to the housing shortage in Ash Grove and up meetings that
lead to a proposal to the Homebuilders Association about building in Ash Grove; creation of
a property inventory for the city; and creation of a packet for builders regarding costs and
contacts for building in Ash Grove.
Creation of a Volunteer Recruitment Fair/Expo in Republic with an emphasis on volunteer
recruitment for non-profits.
Start of cooking classes at the food pantry in Ash Grove for low-income families.
Develop a training/coordination program for volunteers in Ash Grove to maintain flowers at
the welcome signs, park and city triangle.
EXCEL team member created a list of safe places in western Greene County. These are
places (marked with a yellow triangle) where those in danger from abuse can see refuge un-
til police are contacted.
Worked with the City of Republic to name a new city walking trail in honor of a fallen
solider (grad of Republic) and the creation of a hero wall inside the high school.
Development of a communication mode between senior centers in Ash Grove and Republic
to connect drivers and cooks when a need exists.
Creation of an Ash Grove endowment as part of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.
Probably known as the Ash Grove Foundation, this will seek to capture monies and keep
them in Ash Grove for benevolent purposes and community development.
Creation of a welcome sign for the city of Willard. The original idea was a “W” shaped
planter funded by local businesses.
A graduate took on bylaws and organizing the creation of the a Neighborhood Association
in Springfield.
A student felt confident enough to run and win the office of president for the Missouri Li-
brary Association
