Electric Motors and Generators

Electric Generators• Use electromagnetic induction to change 

mechanical energy into electrical energy.

• The electric current changes direction each time the coil makes a half turn.  This is called alternating current.

Examples of Generators• Nuclear Power Plant ­­ uses thermal 

energy from nuclear reactions to make steam, which powers a turbine.

• Power Plants ­­ burn coal or oil to make steam to drive the turbine.

• Wind ­­ wind power makes a magnet spin inside a coil of wire.

• Hydroelectric ­­ falling water turns the turbine.

Transformer ­­ a device that increases or decreases the voltage of alternating current (AC).

Electric Motor• A device that changes electrical energy into 

mechanical energy.

• All have an armature, a coil or loop of wire that rotates.
