What’s It All About?

“Loose Change to Loosen Chains” is a campaign led by kids from kindergarten through high school to rescue victims of modern day slavery. According to “Real Simple” Magazine, there is $10.5 billion in loose change lying around in American households. Loose Chains to Loosen Chains will emphasize three simple steps to get students involved in raising funds for this cause:

1) Educate Family, Friends, and Community on Modern-Day Slavery2) Collect Change through Various Activities and Drives3) Submit funds to Loose Change to Loosen Chains. All success stories can be sent to

[email protected]

The campaign was launched by a then 7th grade student from Ashburn, Virginia who believes one person can make a difference. Inspired by the work of William Wilberforce, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Harriett Tubman, and others who have fought for equality and justice, Zach Hunter wanted to do something about the problem of oppression and slavery today.

Zach discovered that kids could get involved by getting educated about the problem of modern-day slavery and raising funds to actually emancipate modern day slaves! Zach is now a college student and continues to work to end the sale of humans and to inspire his generation to be the change they want to see in the world.

Modern Day Slavery

Millions of children, women and men are held as slaves in the world. Sometimes they have borrowed a small amount of money to pay a debt such as a medical bill. They then find themselves in bondage to the money-lender and may work in a rock quarry breaking rocks by hand, making bricks, rolling cigarettes or cutting gemstones; sometimes, children as young as 5 or 6 years old are forced into prostitution. Victims are often beaten or threatened with violence if they try to leave or aren’t productive enough.

Who Will Benefit From Your Loose Change?

All funds collected through Loose Change To Loosen Change for 2013 should be sent directly to NCF/Loose Change to Loosen Chains. The focus on LC2LC for 2013 is three fold:

PREVENTION Preventing slavery through educating children in impoverished areas who are at high risk of human trafficking. Providing for basic daily needs for these children to keep them from lives of slavery. Experts believe that education, lifting from poverty and providing basic human needs helps prevent slavery, removes children from the snares that traffickers use to entangle them and their families and give them hope for their future. LC2LC has partnerships with two organizations providing this kind of relief and development work.

EQUIPPING Training and mobilizing new abolitionists and giving them the tools to help educate others, raise funds to end slavery and activate others to become voices for the oppressed.

RESCUE Providing funding to organizations who are on the front lines of rescue operations is key to alleviating suffering from those who have already been entrapped. LC2LC supports four organizations rescuing victims.

Steps to launch Loose Change to Loosen Chains at Your School (LC2LC).

The following is a list of suggestions for you to start a LC2LC campaign at your school, church, or youth organization. Feel free to customize this list to meet your group’s needs.

1. Recruit student leaders and adult sponsors to run the campaign. Designate one person to make the presentation at a special assembly or chapel service to launch the campaign. That person should rehearse the Power Point presentation using the “Script.” (The “Script” can be found on page 6).

2. Present the concept to the administration of school and student leaders using the PPT presentation. Secure commitment to launch the program. This commitment is critical to the success of the campaign. Ideally, the whole school and not just one class will participate.

3. Order LC2LC cups for change collection from any stadium cup vendor. You can order these with or without the logo for LC2LC. Yellow cups seem to get the most attention.

4

Page 5: Example Newsletter Article - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/zachhunter/documents/Loose Ch…  · Web viewExample Newsletter and School Newspaper Article Page 11. Example Press

If you don’t have the funds to order cups, ask students to college funds in any container.

4. Reproduce “Example Letter to Teachers” and “Example Letter to Parents” customizing it with your school’s/group’s information (Letters can be found on page 8 and 9). Copy one per teacher of the teacher letter and one per student for the student letter. Send letter home to students.

5. The day of the Power Point Presentation, send home a LC2LC cup with students with the letters to parents.

6. Reproduce and put up posters on campus prior to Power Point Presentation/assembly (see example on page 10).

7. Buy plastic 2-gallon buckets from a hardware store, one for each classroom or homeroom for students to empty their cups into. Label the buckets and plan a competition with prizes for the class that raises the most funds. These buckets come with lids. Cut a hole in the lid large enough for change to go in, but not large enough for hands to fit in. The buckets can usually be purchased for $5 each. If you cannot afford the bucket, use large pickle jars or other containers that have a lid that allows for a slit to be cut in it.

8. Each week of the campaign (3-4 weeks seems to work best) encourage families to look for change in unusual places such as: In your junk drawers Under car seats In the bottom of your purse Ask parents to consider putting a cup in the cup

holder of the car and put the change from fast food purchases in the cup each time for a week

Ask families who own a business to put the cup on the counter for customers to contribute

9. Make announcements in the mornings reminding students each day to collect their change. Remind them that their efforts will bring freedom to kids who are suffering as slaves.

10. Do the devotional with the middle school and high school students. Lower grades can benefit from using the intercessory prayer suggestions each day, but the devotionals are written for older students (see example starting on page 12).

11. Have volunteer students make signs to hold up during carpool that say “Fill up your cup!” and “Loosen the Chains” and “Free the Slaves!” Help build excitement for the program.

12. Publish an article in the weekly newsletter/school newspaper (see example on page 11).

13. Send out a press release to the local media about the campaign (see example on page 15).

5

Page 6: Example Newsletter Article - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/zachhunter/documents/Loose Ch…  · Web viewExample Newsletter and School Newspaper Article Page 11. Example Press

14. Consider having students create artwork or essays in class related to slavery and justice. Display the work and auction the art to benefit the campaign. Please send any and all essays and artwork to [email protected]

15. Keep families informed of the progress with newsletter announcements.

16. When the campaign is complete take the buckets of change to a bank with a “Coinstar” or other automated change counter. Keep track of how much change is collected per class if you’re having a contest. Have the total produced as a cashier’s check or have a check cut by the school for the total.

17. Send out a press release/news letter announcing the success of the campaign.

18. Send the funds raised, via check made out to: NCF/Loose Change to Loosen Chains.

Mail to: NCF 11625 Rainwater Drive, Suite 500Alpharetta, GA 30009.

Example Letter To Parents

Dear Parents,

This month, students at [School name] are launching a campaign to help rescue victims of modern day slavery. Globally, there are more than two million children alone in bonded slavery. They suffer at the hands of slave holders and are robbed of their childhood. [School name] students are raising funds to help prevent children and adults from being enslaved, mobilize a new generation of abolitionists, and rescue people from slavery.

According to “Real Simple” Magazine, there is $10.5 billion in loose change lying around in American households. Loose Chains to Loosen Chains will emphasize three simple steps to get students involved in bringing freedom to victims of modern day slavery:

1) Educate Family, Friends, and Community on Modern-Day Slavery2) Collect Change through Various Activities and Drives to Bring Relief3) Submit Funds and Success Stories to Loose Change to Loosen Chains

The campaign was founded by a middle school student who was discovering his heart for the poor and oppressed and learned about modern day slavery. His idea was to connect students with people in need to bring about freedom for the oppressed. More information will follow about how you and your family can get involved in the coming days!

For now, please support your student as they seek justice.

Thanks for your support,

The student committee at [name of school]

Example Letter To Teachers [most appropriate for elementary teachers]

Dear Teachers,

Thank you for fostering in your students an excitement to rescue victims of oppression and modern day slavery. Here are a few missing details that might help you make the campaign a success:

Loose Change cups: Please give each student a LC2LC cup to take home and fill up with change. They may bring back the cup any day of the week and empty it in a bucket (provided to you) and then take the cup back home to refill it. If the school doesn’t provide cups, you can have the student use any container they have available including zip lock bags.

Please bring your class’s container of change with you to assembly so other classes can see how well your students are doing. At the end of the campaign the classroom that raises the most money will receive a special prize.

Duration of campaign: [list the duration of the campaign.]

If you have questions about the campaign, please email [list local contact information]

Thank You Very Much!

Child rescued from slavery

Recently a young girl and her family were rescued from a rice factory where they had been held as slaves. The great effort your children are making to raise funds to free victims of modern day slavery will allow investigators to free more people like this little girl.

Several (School Name) students have emptied their entire banks of the change and bills they have been collecting. This kind of sacrifice is powerful to see and we’re hoping they will experience joy in the giving.

Come on students -- don’t miss out of the joy of participating in the rescue of victims of slavery!

Students may continue to bring in their cups any day of the week and the change will be collected before class. Each time they fill up their cup they enter their name into a drawing for a weekly prize. The campaign will culminate the end of the first full week of school after spring break.
