Small News is BIG News

By Arthur CusanoInclement weather couldn’t keep

the Pleasantville Panthers from a 20-7 homecoming win on Saturday afternoon, even after being forced to play away from home.

Heavy rains during last week’s dismal stretch of chilly, dreary days forced officials to move the Panthers’ game against the Bronxville Broncos to the brand new football stadium at nearby Pace University. Both teams struggled offensively in the first half before the Panthers made a late push to break away.

The player who certainly did the most pushing was Pleasantville senior running back Mike Hammond. He finished the day with 183 yards on 15 carries and ran for two of the team’s three touchdowns. Hammond, one of four team captains, scored his first touchdown in the final minute of the first half to tie the game and then scored again early in the fourth quarter.

Hammond’s impressive running also helped put the Panthers on the 3-yard line late in the game, where freshman quarterback Jack Howe completed a pass to wide receiver Jack Minerva to help put the game out of reach for the Panthers.

Pleasantville head coach Tony Beccera said Hammond got major help from his linemen.

“You have to give it to the offensive line,” said Becerra, “for giving him the holes.”

Beccera also noted that the team’s seniors played a big role in Saturday’s class B victory.

“It’s their last homecoming, and they really willed the rest of the team to get it done in the second half,” he said.

Beccera, who is now in his 12th year as Panthers head coach, said he did not mind having his team play at Pace’s new facility for its biggest game of the season.

“I’m very envious of the turf,” he said. “I love that it’s so close and they even have a ‘P’ in the middle of the field for us. Our fans came out for us, and it was great.”

Pleasantville will play its regular-season against Putnam Valley on Friday evening, with both teams in position to make the Class B playoffs. When asked what his team still needed to work on, Beccera’s response was “everything.”

“We are not a complete team by any sense,” he said. “We’ll be a work in progress until the very last game. And that’s one of the lessons that they are going to take with them after football – that you never stop working.”

Bronxville’s Sam Connors helped the

Broncos get in scoring position with a 40-yard run, which running back

Anthony Napolitano then capitalized on for an early 7-0 lead. But the team

struggled from that point on. According to Bronxville head coach

Jeff Napolitano, his team was beat up front by the Panthers and could not get into any rhythm.

“They took the game to us right at the line of scrimmage,” he said. “And we didn’t answer back. We couldn’t stop them.”

The Panthers’ strong defense kept Bronco signal caller Brian DePaul on the run for much of the game.

“Unfortunately, our quarterback didn’t have much time to throw,” said Napolitano. “So that didn’t allow us to have as good a game as we had hoped.”
