Title notes: Soil and Rocks

Warm Up:

1. Explain what causes tectonic plates to move.

2. Explain what plate boundaries create earthquakes, mountains, and volcanoes.

3. Explain subduction.

Dec 159:29 AM

Examine the soil samples* Write your observations on the chart.

Soil color

Observations

What do you see within in?

Describe what it looks like.

Dec 119:08 AM

I can describe the materials that make up soil.

Soil is a mixture of 4 things: weathered rock particles, organic matter, water, and air* Organic matter: remains/wastes products of plants, animals, and other

living things (roots, bacteria, fungi, decomposers) These things give the soil nutrients

All soils are not the same! different soils are made up of different ingredients and

different amounts of those ingredients

Soils video (4:45)

Dec 119:11 AM

Properties of soil: texture: determined by size of weathered rock particles (sand, silt, clay) color: helps to identify content of soil the nutrients level (iron: red, humus: black/dark brown); helps determine ability to hold moisture (bright colored drain well) particle size: space between soil particles * As particle size increases so does the amount of water that can pass through

pH: measure of acidity fertility: nutrient level ability to hold moisture

* Sand: holds least amount of waterClay: holds the most water

* The environment the provides the richest and most fertile soil would be somewhere that has the best mixture of

humus, clay, and sand (ex: floodplain)

Dec 119:12 AM

I can explain how soil forms as a part of plate tectonics and the rock cycle.

rock is broken down by weathering and mixes with other material (organic material, water) on the

surface of the Earth

Types of Rocks and the Rock Cycle video

How are the rock cycle and tectonic action related?

Dec 119:13 AM

I can illustrate the rock cycle.

Dec 119:19 AM

 Liquids cool and form crystals

Dec 119:13 AM

I can describe how igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks form through the rock cycle.

Igneous rocks: forms when molten rock cools and becomes solid can form on Earth's surface or within it can raise to the Earth's surface over time ex: volcanic rock, basalt (covers ocean floor)

Sedimentary rocks: forms when pieces of older rocks, plants, and other loose materials get pressed together or cemented together the loose materials are carried by wind and water, creating layers ex: shale, sandstone (Grand Canyon)

Metamorphic rocks: forms when heat or pressure causes older rocks to change into new types of rocks Rocks get buried underneath others, can happen instantaneously or over millions of years ex: slate, marble

Dec 152:46 PM

Create a song for the rock cycle with a partner.

Your song must include all main parts of the rock cycle

Dec 172:27 PM

TOD:

Explain the rock cycle.
