SENIOR SIGN OUT PROCEDURE Beginning Tuesday May 23 AFTER 3:00pm, Seniors may stop in the Third Floor Office and pick up their Senior

Sign Out form. The forms will NOT be available any sooner.

Over the next three days, they will follow their REGULAR class schedule and while in EACH class, the senior will:

1. Take their exam.

2. Turn in all required books, materials, etc. to their teacher. 3. Have the teacher sign their Senior Sign Out form. This signature states that the senior is totally done with

that CLASS and is not to return. 4. Repeat these steps in EACH class until the senior has all the necessary signatures. Once the senior obtains ALL the necessary signatures, they take their Senior Sign Out form to the Third Floor Office. If everything is in order, Mr. Walker will sign and then the senior is no longer a ‘senior’. They are ready for

Thursday June 1 graduation ceremonies.

This procedure can take up to 3 days to complete. The senior MUST continue to attend each class until they have obtained that teacher’s signature. If a senior has ANY Off-Campus classes (or on-line classes), they should have

received an OFF-CAMPUS SIGN OUT form. They can go to the Counseling Office if they need one.

ACADEMIC AWARDS Our high achieving students will be honored on Thursday May 4 in our auditorium. The senior ceremony begins at

6:30pm. Our underclassmen are honored, each class with their own ceremony, during the day. Qualifying students

will receive invitations in the mail. Ceremony times are as follows: 11th grade 8:42am, 10th grade 10:36am, 9th grade 1:09pm.

tickets for Grad Bash can be purchased through Mrs.

Augustine in the 12th Grade office. Students must bring their waiver form and $60 check payable to PN Grad

tained the login codes and passwords to access IB scores. AP students must login to the AP system on their own,

create a user name, and a private password known only to themselves. If you have trouble accessing scores in Ju-ly, please contact Mr. Searing via email at [email protected].

VOLUNTARY STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE PROGRAM During this school year the Portage Board of Education made available a voluntary student accident insurance pro-gram. Since the District has made this insurance available, an increasing number of parents/guardians have been

taking advantage of this inexpensive policy. This fact dictates that as a community service, we will continue to offer

this voluntary insurance.

The District offers this program because of trends in rising family health and dental insurance costs, increased de-

ductibles, and co-payments. Furthermore, in an attempt to limit the Districts' rising insurance costs, this program provides an alternative for claims due to accidental injuries that unfortunately occur on our property. This is the

case for both during and after school hours.

Plan information and the enrollment forms are available and respond to diverse family insurance needs. Coverage

provided can help decrease the burden of unexpected medical and dental expenses, including those left unpaid due

to family insurance deductibles and co-payments.

As it relates to middle and high school interscholastic athletics, this voluntary insurance plan also provides coverage

for all sports except grades 9 through 12 tackle football. In that the District requires athletic insurance, you should consider this policy for the coverage it will provide you and your child. A separate policy for high school interscho-

lastic football is also made available before practice begins in August.

A link is provided on the District’s home page under the parent/parent information tab, or go directly to www.1stAgency.com. Go to “Find Your School”; select the state; hit “Go”. Select Portage Public Schools. From

there you can download and print the brochure/enrollment form PDF and enroll via the mail with a check or money order, OR enroll online with a credit card.

FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE

2017-2018 Schedules

With the Skyward system in place, online scheduling was utilized for 2017/2018 course selection. It will be im-portant to pay attention to announcements toward the end of the year. Please remember, schedule changes will be

very limited! This includes seminars. We must treat seminars as a regular elective class. Classroom space and teach-

ers are limited no matter what class is in question. The only schedule changes that will be permitted are those in which level changes are required (i.e. class failure or poor class performance) or a student is missing an hour due to

a dropped class or schedule conflict. In order to maintain the integrity of the scheduling process, no other schedule changes will be allowed, including teacher, lunch, or seminar requests.

As counselors work through schedule “conflicts” this spring and early summer, they will contact students via their school email addresses. Students should frequently check their school email for any possible communication re-

garding their schedules for next fall.

College Planning

Earlier this year, counselors visited all English 11 classes to discuss college planning for all juniors. A detailed

presentation was given and students received a parent newsletter to summarize the presentation. A copy of the power point was on our PNHS website in November. Some highlights are: researching college options, arranging

college tours/visits, taking and re-taking college entrance exams (ACT/SAT), funding tuition, the college application process and timeline and resources/tools to help guide them in these steps.

To follow up with the group presentations, counselors will meet with students individually during May. Counselors

are committed to providing the best opportunity for open discussion, planning and research for all juniors as they begin the college exploration process. During the 1:1 junior interview, counselors will provide an organized folder to

all juniors. This folder will summarize the meeting, provide online resources for scholarships and test prep and re-view the college application timeline and process. Your junior should be bringing home a grey school folder with

many handouts and resources in it to prepare for the college application process coming up this summer and early

fall.

Junior students can begin their account set up through www.parchment.com this summer. Parchment is the 3rd

party system that is used to send transcripts electronically to colleges. Account set up info was included in the jun-ior Google doc from the Junior Interview.

Final Transcripts for Seniors

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that his/her final transcript is sent to the college s/he plans to attend

in the fall. To request a final transcript, students need to log on to their parchment account at parchment.com to request that a final transcript be sent electronically to the school of choice. All transcript requests for all schools

MUST occur through the Parchment site. Students must request their transcript through Parchment to be sent to the

Common App, as well. This info was shared with all seniors during the senior class meeting on April 19th, in English classes at the end of the school year and via announcements. Final transcripts will be ready approximately mid June

2017.

Counselors will visit all English 12 classes on May 10 to review the final transcript process and to inquire, in writing,

the post-secondary plans of all seniors.

ACT and SAT National Test Dates and Info

For all ACT and SAT test questions, dates and registration, please visit each test’s website: www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.org.

Audits and Credit Recovery

Counselors will individually “audit” each student upon completion of the second semester. That means we will re-view each student’s transcript and credits earned. If the student has failed a required class, the counselor will adjust

the schedule for next year accordingly. If the student is behind in credits necessary for graduation, the counselor

will notify the parent and student via phone and a letter home. The letter mailed home will outline credit recovery

options available for students. This information will be time sensitive as enrollment in summer online classes for credit recovery will be limited and classes will begin the first week in June. Contact your student’s counselor if you

have questions.

Office Hours

The Counseling Office will remain open until the middle of June. Hours will be 8:00 to 3:00 pm. We will be closed for lunch from noon to 1:00 pm. The Department Chairperson will be available until the approximately the end of June.

INTERESTED IN TRAVELING TO JAPAN? Ms. Nott is recruiting travelers for a trip to Japan in 2018. We will be departing June 26, 2018 for a 10 day tour traveling to major sites and cities. Any student (grade 8-12) , parent, or interested adult from any school is eligible

to attend. Teachers and family are eligible for a discount. Students 9-12th grade can earn 3 college credits for free.

FROM YOUR PN PARENTS COMPASS

From Sheila Labian, PNP president: As the end of the school year approaches, here is one last event that Portage Northern Parents Compass supports through donations and volunteers: The Portage Northern Staff & Retiree Luncheon is June 13 and we will be providing the desserts. We will need delicious dessert donations as well as a few volunteer servers. Watch for a SignUp Genius coming out in early May.

Though our organization has no direct responsibilities on June 1, did you know the beautiful and elegant graduation ceremony at Miller Auditorium is made possible by PN Parents Compass sponsorship? And that sponsorship is only available due to the generous donations of our par-ents? Please consider donating to this non-profit in the fall!

On Wednesday May 17, we will host our final Compass event of the year in the PN Community Rooms. All parents are welcome to join us at their convenience for light refreshments at an in-formal reception in honor of the parents who have donated their time, talents, or funds during the 2016-2017 school year.

In order to make attendance easi-er, we are offer-ing two reception times:

7:00-7:40am

or

12:00-12:30pm.

During these times we will also be voting on officers and a budget for next year.
