Subject: ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENGLISH LITERATURE
Autumn Term
GCSE Literature coursework should have been completed whereas English coursework both written and oral continues. The main focus of the term is preparation of the examination texts and the AQA Anthology.
Spring Term By Friday 24th February 2005 all coursework should have been completed for both English and English Literature courses (common folder), including oral coursework.
Summer Term Coursework components will have been assessed by the English Department and moderated externally. Examination revision and practice only remaining.
English
Paper 1 30% 1hr 45mins – unseen media reading, writing to argue, persuade, advise. Paper 2 30% 1hr 30mins – Anthology poetry, writing to inform, explain, describe.

Literature 70% one Paper 2 hours – Anthology poetry, 20th Century prose text.
Written Combined English/English Literature folder – five essays – 20% of English Mark, 30% of Literature.

Summer Term The focus will be on reading, listening and speaking skills. The speaking examinations take place at the beginning of May.
Further Guidance (if any) The learning of vocabulary is essential, if students are to be fully prepared for the examinations. It is also vital for students to produce draft coursework, to enable them to receive feedback from staff before completing their final version.
Written Exam Papers and Percentages
There are 2 written examination papers which are taken at either foundation or higher level. These cover the skills of listening and reading. In addition every student completes an oral examination consisting of two role plays and a conversation. Each of the examination papers is worth 25%.
Coursework or Assessed Practical
Written coursework is completed at appropriate times during the course, including controlled coursework in Year 10 and Year 11. The amount of coursework produced determines the level of entry and the grades available.
Grades Available:
You will be entered for either foundation or higher level in each skill area. Foundation papers cover the grades C - G and Higher papers A* - D. The final grade is determined by the cumulative score achieved over the four papers.

Subject: GERMAN (MODULAR) Full course
Autumn Term
Module 3 Work and Lifestyle. During this term students complete written and spoken coursework, as prescribed by the board. They must submit 2 pieces of written work, although more pieces may be completed in order to select the best pieces of work. In addition they have to produce a 4 minute speaking tape on one topic in this module. Students are encouraged to make a practice tape completed at home which staff can comment on before the final tape is recorded in school.

Module 4 The Young Person in society. Module 4 is completed during the Spring and Summer Term. Modules 1-3 are revisited for revision purposes.
Further Guidance (if any) The learning of vocabulary is essential if students are to be fully prepared for the examinations. It is also vital for students to produce draft coursework to enable them to receive feedback from staff before completing their final versions. To ensure a grade C students must be able to accurately use all 3 basic tenses and give opinions.
Written Exam Papers and Percentages
Module 4 Examination consists of listening reading, speaking & writing papers. Each paper is worth 12.5%. The speaking test consists of one role play and a conversation on two topics. In the writing paper students are required to complete 2 tasks. At Foundation level they write tasks of approximately 30 and 75 words and at Higher Level the tasks require 75 and 110 words. All papers in the module are sat at either foundation or higher level.
Coursework or Assessed Practical:
Module 3: Speaking - 7.5%; Writing - 12.5% All written work must be completed before GCSE mock examinations. The speaking test will be recorded in October. The level of entry is determined by the tasks set for each pupil.
Grades Available:
Each module is assessed separately and awarded a grade. Foundation papers can achieve grades C - G and Higher papers A* - D. The final grade is determined by the cumulative score achieved across the four modules.

Written work is assessed by 2 pieces of coursework covering topics studied over the 2 year course. One piece must be completed in controlled conditions. This will be completed at appropriate times during Year 11. Coursework is worth 25% of the student’s final grade.
Grades Available:
Foundation level covers the grades C – G and higher level A* - D. Students may be entered for a mixture of foundation and higher papers depending on their strengths in each skill area. The final grade is determined by the cumulative score across all four papers.

Revision Preparation
Time Management & Goal Setting
It is important that you use your revision time effectively to enable you to maximise your potential. In order to make the most of your available time you must firstly identify what you need to revise and what feasible time you have available to do it.
Here are a few possible ways of organising your time:
" Make a calendar and write on it what subjects and particular areas you will cover on each day.
" Produce a Chart displaying the total time available for revision (up to the day of the exam) and plot against it the time you will set aside for each subject.
" Keep a diary/organiser. Write down all of your commitments (such as football training, etc.) and divide up the time you have left to revise.
For effective revision it is vital that you set yourself ACHIEVABLE deadlines.
Of great significance can be the time and place that you choose to revise. Many believe that the morning is the most receptive time for learning. However many people prefer to work at night - whatever suits you best.
" Perhaps in the mornings get up an hour early to do some revision before the rest of the family get up. Alternatively set aside some time in the evening to do some revision.

" Find a place that you feel comfortable revising in.
" Tidy the table up so that it is free from clutter.
" Gather all the revision materials that you may need
" Make sure that the room is well ventilated so that there is enough oxygen.
Try to avoid drinking caffeine-based drinks. Your brain will learn to associate this with revision, which is not good as you will not be allowed such drinks in the examinations.
‘The Rule of Three’
This method of revision organisation can be used at best when you have left school and are on study leave. In this time you must strike a balance between good quality revision and time at rest. You should aim to do approximately 6 hours of revision a day.
Below is a method of revision which balances work and rest productively.
According to research, the average person’s attention span is 20 minutes. Choose a topic and revise for this length of time.
After this it is best to have a short break and then have two more 20 minute sessions.
You should have now revised for one hour. Take a slightly longer break. Continue for two more hours, up to a total of 3 hours.
In one day there are three possible blocks of three hour segments that you can revise in, the morning, the afternoon and the evening. You should revise in two of these blocks.

Revision Tips
Methods of Revision
It is important for quality revision that you select the methods of revision that best suit you. Here is a selection of different tips for you to try for yourself.
" Brainstorming; This is helpful to initiate the revision of a subject area. Start by writing down everything that you already know about the topic. Use this information to lead you to revise certain areas in more depth and add things that you didn’t know before. This can work well in groups if you share the knowledge that each of you know.
" Mind-Mapping; Start by getting hold of a copy of the subject syllabus and on separate pieces of paper, write down all of the things that it says you should know. Lay these notes down and put them in a logical order. You will find that many topics with contain shared information. It is then easy to follow these maps and revise each area as you follow the chain.
" Memory Aids; there are several types of memory aids that you may chose to use.
" A popular one is the use of Cue-Cards which have short pieces on information on. They can be read regularly and used to prompt you to relay additional knowledge that you have on the subject area.
" Tape Recordings, You can make a recording of the notes which you have made and play them back when you are doing something else.
" The use of Mnemonics (translated as ‘trick of the memory’) can be used in order to remind you of certain things, such as the expression ‘Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vein’ to remember the colours of the rainbow.
Revision needs to be active, so don't just sit there reading and re-reading your notes! You will remember far more if you make your revision an active learning process.

" Making Notes; This will most likely form the basis of the revision that you do. However there are several ways of making notes.

" Simplify your notes; It is most helpful if once you have made your notes that you go back and simplify them. This process of condensing and re-writing will aid your long term memory of the subject.
" Making Outlines; This can be used in order to remember an overview of a subject area, or indeed they can be used to enable you to recognise the form of exam questions.
" Making Lists; Use lists to remember things like a series of events or parts of a flower for instance. They can be easily read and in time, recalled.
TESTING YOURSELF! There can be a temptation to spend all your revision time reading and writing notes, however it is vital that you spend time testing yourself in order to check whether you have actually absorbed the information.

Key Words
Integral to exam success is the ability to interpret the key words in each question.
Here is a selection of the most commonly used words found in exam papers together with their definition.
examine - write what you have to say for and against a subject, say which side you support and give reasons for your support. explain - give the reasons for something. express - often found in maths exams; say in a different way, e.g. express as a fraction. illustrate — use examples to make a point clear. interpret — give the meaning in your own words using examples, where necessary, to make the meaning clear. justify - say why you think that the answer is what it is and give reasons for why you feel that way. option — a choice. outline - write about the main ideas; do not go into detail. pictorial - (adjective) in a picture. prove — show that the answer is true by giving the steps needed to reach it. purpose — (noun) the reason why. relate - show how things connect; they may be very similar or one may make another act in a certain way. requirement - something which must be done. review - give an overall view of the important parts of the subject and give your views backed up by facts when necessary. state - write the main points in a brief, clear way. suggest — often found in geography exams; using all that you have learned, say what the answer might be. summarize — bring together the main points and write about them in a brief, clear way. trace - write about the history of a subject starting at the beginning and following it through to the end.
Once you have read the exam question, go back and circle or highlight the
key words in order for you to identify exactly what is wanted from question.

Examination Day
You should know when and where your examinations will take place and arrive in good time to save stress on the day of the exam. On the day itself, follow the guidelines below in order to perform at your best.
" DRINK WATER - Before the exam. Try not to drink too much, as you don't want to have to go to the toilet during the exam! Water is good for the brain and can help you concentrate.
" BE CONFIDENT – Have belief in yourself. Hopefully you should have revised well and you should have confidence in your ability. Keep your distance from people who may increase your anxiety or distract you.
" READING TIME - Give yourself time to read through the paper before you attempt it. This will help you to get an idea of what the paper is about, and should prevent you from repeating the contents of your answers. This may also help to get rid of some nerves.
" ORDER - It doesn't matter in what order you answer the questions (as long as you make it clear to the examiner). If you can’t answer the question, don’t waste time. Move on to the next question and try to come back to it later on. You will become more relaxed when you find a question that you can answer.
" STAY CALM - Try to relax, by taking deep breaths.
" TIME MANAGEMENT – Calculate the time available to answer each question and ensure that you attempt the required number of questions.
