FOUNDATION DIPLOMA
The Foundation Diploma (FD) is ideal for people with little industry
experience, but who would like to gain practical knowledge and a soundqualification. It involves taking our Introduction to Shipping paper and oneof our specialist group 2 papers from the list (below). It is a stand alone
qualification in its own right, but is also a great way to ease into thejourney towards membership and gives an overall view of the business.
Completion of the FD means the papers you have sat will be recognised ifyou go on to full professional qualification that leads to membership with
the Institute.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA
The Advanced Diploma (AD) is the latest qualification developed by theICS. Its been designed as a stepping stone into full qualification, and suits
those who have some industry knowledge, possibly gained through timein the industry. Like the FD, the AD is a respected qualification. It
involves taking the ICS benchmark paper Shipping Business and one
other specialist group 2 paper (see below). Because these papers will berecognised if you go on to study for the full professional qualifying exams(PQEs) theyre a great option for those wanting to ease into study or
juggle the demands of both work and study. You can also take the AD afterhaving sat the FD and have all of the papers credited to the full PQE.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS(PQE)
The Professional Qualifying Exams (PQEs) form the pinnacle of the ICS
qualification. Completion of these exams is an illustrationof ones developed knowledge and understanding of the commercial
shipping industry. It formally comprises 7 exams, which you can do over 5
years (although many complete in a much shorter time). Embarking on thePQEs will mean that you need to sit a minimum of 2 exams in the firstyear including Shipping Business and Excluding Introduction to Shipping.
Both the FD and AD count towards this qualification, but many otherdegrees and qualifications may make you eligible for exemptions although
this is only available for the full PQEs (exemptions cant be granted tocandidates sitting FD or AD).
Once PQE's have been completed, you will be eligible to apply forMembership with the Institute.

Exemptions:
Candidates with relevant professional or educational qualificationsvalidated by this Institute will be able to apply for exemptions, on subjectfor subject basis.
The exemptions are granted by ICS London after verifying thequalifications/ experience gained by the candidates.
For availing exemptions, students have to submit the Application form theExemptions alongwith the following:
Master Mariners: CDC copy showing last 3 years sailing details, COCCopy and Passport First Page copy.
For others: For availing Introduction to Shipping, submit Employment
certificate from the Employer giving details of job descriptions.
For availing exemption from other subjects please submit yourdegree/diploma certificate showing relevant subject for which exemption isapplied alongwith syllabus.

No need to submit the fee alongwith the Exemption Application form. Theexemption fee should be remitted on receipt of Exemption Letter from ICS,
London.
The procedure for applying for examinations are
1) Register as a student with the institute (by submitting StudentRegistration form alongwith Registration Fee- Demand Draft/ At par
Cheque drawn in favour of 'The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers' payableat Chennai.)
2) For availing Exemptions, alongwith Registration form please submit
your PQE Exemption form.
3) Enter the subjects you wish to sit and submit your Entry Formalongwith the payment.
4) For getting course materials, submit your Distance Learning Center
Application form alongwith the payment.
ICS- DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME
Distance Learning Centre is established by ICS, Madras Branch to enablethe student to prepare to take the Foundation Diploma, Advanced Diplomaand Professional Qualifying Examinations by providing ICS Course
materials.
The students who pursue the examinations may enroll for as many subjectsas they wish by submitting DLC Application form alongwith the relevant
course material cost.
