Ocean Avenue, Lompoc, CA 93436 VOLUME 40 NUMBER 7 PUBLISHED MONTHLY OCTOBER 2011 Many things in life are a cause for faith. We have faith that when we put the key in the ignition of our car, it will start. We have faith that the sun will rise tomorrow. We have faith that somehow the Lodge will continue to operate, and continue its' good works. Faith is a good thing and can be a source of inspiration to lift us up in times of need; but faith without good works are for naught. It takes hard work for things to happen. We are truly blessed that we have so many good Elks that have invested so much of their time and energy for the good works of the Order. Many hands make the load light and when you lend your own hand to a project, you are the one to benefit. The good feeling that you get when you help someone else is like no other. The feeling of belonging that you get when you join your Brothers and Sisters in accomplishing the good works of the Order is also truly special. After all, that is why I joined the Lodge. I wanted to make a difference in the life of someone else and make a few new friends in the process. The great thing about the Elks is that you have many opportunities to do just that. It can be as simple as helping in the mailing of the Elks Tale, to stepping up to being a Chairman for one of our many committees. Don't let fear of the unknown limit your life in the Lodge. There are many resources available to you. All it takes is that first step. Step up and speak up. You will be glad you did. Bob Murray The Biggest Boy Scout in the Lodge My selection for the Elk of the month is Beverly Rammelkamp. She has supported the good works of our Lodge and jumped right in after joining. She was the Candidate for the Ritual Contest. She can be counted on to serve on a dinner crew. She set up and conducted a tour of the NASA facility for our Boy Scout Troop. Congratulations to Beverly on being Elk of the Month.

The support of family and friends was great. The eventmade all of us pull together and focus on the now andrenew what family is all about. With that in mind, I wouldlike to inject some of that into my Elks family and spreadthe love and energy of that thought. We need to heal, build and share our time and effort in supporting eachother and the lodge.Yours TrulyGlen Heidlebaugh, Leading Knight

Hello Brothers & Sisters,Can you believe it’s already

October? It’s the last quarter ofthe year and the few months leftare surely going to fly by just as

fast. I hope you have enjoyed the entertainment so far thisyear and I’m already hard at work lining up more gigs forthe next couple months. We’ve got some newentertainment this month along with our regulars. Sorry, the comedy show for October didn’t pan out, but we’llkeep working on it. We hope you join us and support thevenues we’ve selected for your entertainment. We stillhave open dates to fill and always looking for reasonablypriced ideas.

Now for some serious talk – LUNCH, yes lunch, whois eating our lunch. We have a few thoughts on this and myears are always open. Please put your ideas in black andwhite so we can pass them on to the right people – I’msure some of you may have heard the term “C.R.S.” (Can’tRemember Stuff) so put it on paper and get it to me thenI won’t have any excuse!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas andalways open for suggestions either in person or by leavinga note in the suggestion box.

Thank you for your support!Sincerely,Terry Gurley, Loyal Knight

Please reconsider...Don’t quit! Stick with those of uswho are standing up for you andsupport those who need to besupported. Show your compassion

to those who need it.Misunderstandings can often shatter the best of families.

If there is a moment when you feel like throwing in the towelor slamming the door shut on our family, please come to ourBig Brother, the Biggest Boy Scout in our family of Elkdom. He’s always there for us and ready to listen openly if we needan opportunity to express our concerns.

Being human is tough! Being Benevolent is even tougher!A forgiving heart is often hard to find. Showing kindness orgoodwill is often looked upon as “what do you want in return”?Performing good or charitable acts comes from the heart. Elk’sare known for being charitable givers and not seeking to makea personal profit or be glorified for what they do. A smile orkind word in return is our reward. When I am in my home ofElkdom, I profit with warm wishes and an occasional thankyou! The opportunity to be a part of this supportive Family withalmost 1000 members is my bounty!

It is my continuing passion to be an integral, active part ofour most wonderful family. Please know we are all equals inthis world and we all have our breaking points. After all, we areall humans with feelings.

Again I ask, don’t quit! If you are not satisfied withsomething then reach out to a fellow brother or sister or put anote in the suggestion box. Let someone have the chance tohelp work through our troubles, Yes, ‘our troubles’, becauseyour troubles are our troubles. If we lose even one Elk memberfrom our family, we are all ultimately losers. The lodge loses, the community loses, those who benefit from our deeds loses. We don’t want to lose you! Please keep a Benevolent Heartopen to all who need it.

Remember we are a National program. We might start inLompoc, but we are Elks of America!May Brotherly Love bind us always,Janet Gurley

I would like to take this time to say thank you to allof the members who helped on refinishing the members’bar top. I hope everyone understands that taking on a joblike this requires a lot of help and, as always, there is thepotential for setbacks and mistakes. With that beingsaid, we were fortunate and only very few of thesehappened. Now, after all the work is done, I think wehave a beautiful bar again. Achievement was a team effort and I would like torecognize the participants. First on the list are HarveyPettplase (PER) and his partner Mario Robledo ourBrothers from the Santa Barbara Lodge #613. Withouttheir help, I would have been lost. These men who, also, redid the two bars at their lodge are like a resin-pouringmachine! Thank you Harvey and Mario!!

From our lodge, the construction crew consisted ofTerry Gurley (Loyal Knight) , Jim Martin (COB Trustee), Phil Hager (Trustee) and Joe Vasques (PER) . On ourpouring crew were Frank Martinez, Jim Huseman, RogerAllen, Bonnie and Boomer (PER) Braithwaite, PhilHager and Terry Gurley. The name tag group was madeup of Co-Chairs Randy (PER) and Junnell Tillman, JohnSams, Joe Vasques (PER) and Sylvia Boynton (PER)

If I missed anyone, I’m very sorry. To thosementioned or missed, thank you one and all!!Sincerely,Howdy Spicer

REMINDER

A SPECIAL DAY THIS COULD BE USSOMEDAY:Our 24 Annual Happy Happening was held atth

Kiwanis Lake in River Park on Saturday, September17 . Once again it was another wonderful day for ourth

handicap children and other physical challengedresidents of our community. Our special guests enjoyeda fun filled day of fishing and the companionship ofmany volunteers who assisted them through out thecourse of the day. As chairman of this event, I am soproud of the many volunteers who worked so diligentlyto insure our program would be another great success, which it was. This year in addition to our own Elkmembers and many of their wives, we also had MilitaryPersonnel, local students working on credits forcommunity projects, local citizens and of course ourown Boy Scout Troop #2274 who offered theirassistance. In addition to fishing, our guests enjoyeddelicious hamburgers and hot dogs along with othertreats which they really look forward to every year.

Our Aid to Local Handicap Committee would liketo take this opportunity to thank Cindy McCall, TheDepartment of Parks and Recreation and the ParkRangers for their support of this years HappyHappening. They provided us with the Rainbow Troutand did a great job in preparing the park for our event. Itis also appropriate to thank the major contributors to ourLocal Handicap Fund. They include The Lompoc ElksLadies Auxiliary, George P. George, Neil & JeanieMcBratney, The Brewski Boys, Gene Schaefer, SandyDoty and Jerry Agnelli.

In closing, let me once again praise the effort putforth by all of our volunteers. Your patience andcompassion while assisting our special guests wascertainly in the true tradition of ELKS CARE - ELKSSHARE. Finally, one final note “Thanks Pete for all thegreat pictures you took during the day”.Jim Braithwaite, ALHC Chairman

LODGE MANAGEMENT

MEMBERSHIP HISTORY

What do you think about the management of yourLodge? Do you think that all the officers are electedevery year? Does the Manager manage all thepersonnel? Do you think the Board of Trustees doesn’thave to listen to the will of the Lodge? Does theSecretary take the minutes of the House Committee? Isthe Exalted Ruler the final word on all decisions? Would you believe all of the above are not entirely true?

Our structure is designed as a check and balancesystem and therefore, there are a lot of controls over theentire operation. The “Bible” is the Grand LodgeStatutes, they describe the responsibilities of positionsand methods of operation. Of course, individual Lodgesare different and the local By-Laws elaborate on thosedifferences. The Officers:

There are seven officers elected to office on April1st every year; The Exalted Ruler, Leading Knight,Loyal Knight, Lecturing Knight, Secretary, Treasurerand Tiler. One person is elected for a term of five years— a Trustee. There are four carry-over Trustees andfour appointed officers: The Esquire, Chaplain, InnerGuard and the Organist. The Structure:

In large Lodges like ours, we establish a club withinthe Lodge structure. Primarily, this is the bar, kitchenand our catering service and are the operationresponsibility of the Manager The controlling body ofthe Club is the House Committee. Under our Laws, theHouse Committee is chaired by the Exalted Ruler andconsists of five Trustees plus the Leading Knight, LoyalKnight and the Lecturing Knight. They meet on the thirdThursday of the month and their meetings are generallyopen.

The other governing body is the Board of Trustees. They are charged with the control of funds, investments, real and personal property, and the budget of the Lodge. Of course, this makes them the controlling factor in allmajor expenditures. The budget and any majorexpenditures over the budget are approved by themembership.

By Grand Lodge Statutes, all monies go through theTreasurer’s ledgers. Requests are from the controllingbodies to the Treasurer to issue checks.

The operations of the Lodge are in the hands of theSecretary: membership, accounting mailing lists, GrandLodge reports, correspondence of the Lodge and the

assistance of carrying out the Lodge program as long itdoes not violate the Laws of the Order. He also receivesand turns over to the Treasurer all monies due to theLodge. It is the responsibility of the Secretary to assurethat the Laws of the Grand Lodge are followed.

The Exalted Ruler is the Executive Officer of theLodge, and as such, presides over meetings, appointscommittees, attends Lodge clinics and enforces theLaws of the Order. He is an ex-officio member of theBoard of Trustees, but he cannot preside, vote or reversethe actions of the Board. In the absence of the ExaltedRuler, the Leading Knight assumes the office of theExalted Ruler. Now that you have an idea of how your Lodge isgoverned, I hope that you know where to direct yourcomments, whether they be praise, criticism or ideas.
