Open Choice and Full Support to Customers SAP remains committed to support its customers’ choice of database technologies and vendors. SAP will continue to provide innovation for all databases supported and work with its database partners to support these innovations, which may include in-memory optimizations.
http://global.sap.com/corporate-en/news.epx?PressID=20221
SAP Business Suite remains open to other database technologies and vendors and only one version of SAP Business Suite goes forward without disruption. Innovations in the SAP Business Suite, such as push down of data centric processing logic from the application server to database tier via stored procedures would be made available to other databases too making them perform better too.

18
What is Oracle Exadata?
Innovation Benefits
Smart storage capabilities Smart storage reduces the I/O bandwidth consumption and CPU consumption of database server by offloading
query processing to data aware storage layer – DW databases gain significant from this Exadata capability.
Hybrid columnar compression for
OLTP
Reduced warehouse size in Exadata increases the DW databases performance due to lower database scan I/O.
There are associated capex savings too.
Smart flash cache Repeated random reads and writes typical of OLTP databases benefit from the usage of Flash cache – enhances
read/write performance between 8X – 20X resulting in smoother online experience.
Infiniband network Both DW and OLTP databases gain significant from the usage of the ultra high speed Infiniband network – data
movement between database and storage layers happen very fast.
Single Stack for all Oracle
products Both DW and OLTP databases benefit from the ease of patching and maintenance of Exadata.

Challenges at Dongfeng – an automotive scenario example
30
Use Cases
Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. (DFL) was established on June 9, 2003 as a joint venture between Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Nissan Motor Co. It is the biggest joint-venture enterprise in China’s automotive sector, with registered capital valued at US$2 billion. In July 2011, DFL launched a 2011 to 2015 development program, which will be worth around US$7.9 billion to the Chinese economy. The program will increase the company’s sales from 1 million to 2.3 million vehicles and its sales outlets from 1,400 to 2,044.
The Client
DFL needed to ensure its IT services and infrastructure could support this rapid business development, while minimizing infrastructure implementation and maintenance costs.
The Challenge
DFL chose Oracle products to develop its privatecloud database as Oracle Exadata’s integrated hardware and software offers high reliability, easy integration and scalability, reduced costs, and is convenient to manage. The company was attracted to Oracle Exadata’s excellent performance, which significantly reduced purchasing costs by eliminating the need for extra database software and disk arrays. Oracle Exadata would also improve the company’s return on investment for its private cloud database, and save energy, data center space, and management and service expenses.
Why Exadata

Use Cases
31
Challenges at Dongfeng – Business Outcome
The Implementation Path
11/2011 DFL purchased an Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 Quarter Rack, engaging Oracle Diamond Partner Accenture and Oracle partner Shenzhen Lan-You Technology Co., Ltd. to install the machine at the company’s data center.
12/2011 Shenzhen Lan-You Technology deployed the test and development environment later that month, followed by the main Oracle Exadata hardware.
01/2012 The Oracle partners deployed the databases for the spare parts logistics management and distributor management systems. The deployment time was reduced from one month to one week, minimizing the impact on the company’s operations.
03/2012 The partners carried out performance tests and additional tuning, and deployed and tested the management monitoring tool.
06/2012 The spare parts logistics management and distributor management systems went live on the Oracle Exadata-based, private, cloud database.

Use Cases
32
Challenges at Dongfeng – Business Outcome
By taking advantage of Oracle Exadata’s superior performance, DFL has easily supported both systems on a single database machine. In preliminary tests, Oracle Exadata improved the performance of the spare parts logistics management system by 15x, compared to its legacy architecture-based database environment.
The Results
In addition, running the distributor management system centrally on Oracle Exadata ensures DFL can support the large volume of data in the company’s distributor-management system and the rapid increase in system users. This will significantly reduce the hardware required, compared to running the system separately at each location.
The database machine also provides the storage capacity and scalability to easily support the expected growth in sales, products, and concurrent system users over the next three years. This will save DFL a significant amount in system upgrade costs.
The company developed a private cloud database based on Oracle Exadata Database Machine to integrate enterprisewide data services and support its SAP-based, spare-parts, logistics management system and in-house-developed, distributor-management system.

SAP HANA
SAP HANA is a new data base
technology based on in-memory. It can support transactional (OLTP) and multidimensional (OLAP) workloads. All of
its OLAP capabilities are virtual: there is no need to duplicate data or have a
separate system for reporting. As data is stored once, it is also instantly available through other tools, such as
SAP Landscape Transformation, Data Services or Event Stream Processing for
transactional purposes, and therefore reporting is in real time.
Oracle Exadata
The Oracle Exadata Database Machine is
a complete package of servers, storage, networking, and software that is massively scalable, secure, and redundant.
The Exadata Database Machine is composed of database servers, Oracle
Exadata Storage Servers, an InfiniBand fabric for storage networking and all the other components required to host an

SAP HANA
• Column/Row Storage: Using columnar storage
HANA delivers greater compression, can be better
partitioned (which in turn aids parallelization) and allows on-
the-fly schema extensibility
• 100% In-Memory: HANA computes all aggregates
on-the-fly and performs application logic within the database,
simplifying application design and reducing data movement,
i.e. no materialized aggregates and associated hardware to
maintain, disk only required for persistence, back-up and
for cost saving purposes by shifting unused data
• Parallelization: HANA parallelizes tasks by leveraging
multi-core CPUs, dynamic multi-threading within nodes, and
horizontal and vertical partitioning
• Insert Only: By storing all historical versions of data
values analytics on historical data is enabled, and the
database is ready to meet certain audit / regulatory
requirements
Oracle Exadata
• Intelligent Storage: Smart storage reduces the I/O
bandwidth consumption and CPU consumption of database
server by offloading query processing to data aware storage
layer
• Hybrid Columnar Compression: Reduced
warehouse size in Exadata increases the DW databases
performance due to lower database scan I/O

• Both databases are in-memory enabled and also able to provide significant performance gains for
existing SAP applications using OLAP or OLTP. • For both databases the advancement is still in progress and new supported SAP applications will
follow.
• Both databases can be extended with Analytical applications by adding HANA Apps or Exalytics. This increases the dependency on the DB vendor though.
• Oracle Exadata • More mature product certified by SAP, supports more SAP applications Use Case: Client wants to accelerate SAP application which SAP HANA does not supports
• Supports also older versions of SAP applications (e.g. SAP BI 7.0 vs SAP BW 7.3) Use Case: Client wants to accelerate SAP application without upgrading the SAP application
• Avoid database dependency by not shifting business logic to the database layer Use Case: Client wants to remain DB vendor independent
• SAP HANA
• More and more SAP business functions will become optimized for SAP HANA Use Case: Client wants to implement HANA-optimized business functions
• Applications and database are fully integrated and optimized on each other Use Case: Single vendor strategy Use Case: Client wants to benefit further from future SAP updates
