Letter from the Editor:

Welcome to the rst edition of our new life style trend publication, Ewing

Living Magazine! This periodical is the result of months spent planning,

brainstorming, and organizing by our design team at Ewing Cabinet Company.

The essence of this publication is the value of inspiration and enjoyment.

Our goal is to keep our clients, readers, and friends informed of the most up

to date trends and products. A trend is dened as, “a general tendency,

movement, or direction.” These movements can be inuenced by changes in

lifestyle, availability of resources, and innovation. Awareness of the current

movements can oer exposure to useful new technologies, exciting new

experiences and popular new materials, colors and textures. The choices we

make every day are impacted by what we know and an understanding of how

they work. Our designers hope to broaden the range of choices for readers by

investigating and highlighting the latest trends in today’s culture.

We believe that it is important to see how trends and styles extend across the

areas of home & garden, health & beauty, food & beverage, travel & transpor-

tation, and clothing & accessories. By nding correlations between these areas

we can dene cultural movements. Understanding the general cultural

themes provides a starting point for incorporating them into our lives. For

example, when a movement gravitates toward the return of the “classic” look,

or a color from decades past reemerges in the fashion industry, you will often

see this same connection popping up in home decor.

In the end, our main objective is to help readers and clients nd inspiration.

Whether you draw the inspiration from today’s current trends or from your

own personal experiences, we want to be a resource for you. We begin all

projects with the foundations of great design, incorporating functionality

and aesthetics but an awareness of cultural movement and our client’s own

inspirations allow us to make a space feel uniquely personal and fresh.

Best, The Ewing Living Team

Too often the existing footprint of a kitchen or bath is restrictive and hinders the function of the space. A lot of the time this is due to the home’s age. As homes age, the way we live changes. The family lifestyle of the 1950’s is much dierent than the family lifestyle of the common millen-nial family. For example, we frequently have multiple working family members which has changed eating dynamics. Socially, the kitchen used to be a secluded space sealed o from the rest of the home. Now it’s where guests naturally gather and hangout. Today, the kitchen also holds many other functions such as oce work and kid’s hobbies. The purpose of the modern kitchen is continually evolving from a single-use space into a multi-purpose area. This reinforces the need for having the proper team in place to address all issues from design to execution.

Ideally, clients want to embark on a “turnkey” project. This means that everything, from oors to cabinets to structural work, is done in one fell swoop. Oftentimes, nding designers and contractors that can mesh well together on projects can be a bit of a struggle, or nding an accredited full-service remodeling business with design professionals can pose a challenge. This is where Ewing Cabinet Company and Ewing Building & Remodeling come into place. Here at Marlington and Main, our full-service design and remodeling team operate under one roof. This makes a “turnkey” project much more manage-able because your contractor and designer work side by side. Just as there is no limit to the imagination, the client is presented with limitless possibilities because the Ewing team is there. The client is left with an amazing, updated space, and the Ewing team has successfully added images to their “before and after” portfolio. These images show the craftsmanship and pride put into each and every project, and the entire Ewing team is left with something to be proud of. E

Marlington & Main Showroom

This bathroom was small and outdated. The homeowner wanted a modern space that felt less conned and more airy.

The monochromatic color palette and new lighting plan help the space feel bright and open. The tile continues around the entire room, oor to ceiling, making the space feel and appear larger than it is. Floating vanity and a frameless shower door contribute to the openness while adding an air of modernism.

This dilapidated old store front was in dire need of renovation. The façade needed an extreme makeover. The oor space was divided into three long and narrow dated units, the drop ceiling made the space feel short and the uorescent lighting was cold and overbearing.

The space was completely gutted oering new conguration and 14 foot open ceilings. The new design showroom hosts 12 vignette showcases each oering unique features and style to appeal to all budgets, lifestyles and personal taste. The ceiling and oor were selected to be black to set the stage for displays. The goal of Marlington & Main was to open minds to available options, combina-tions and to create a “WOW” at every turn.

When starting a major renovation project, the rst task at hand is to determine what you are willing to invest in the project. Once this is determined, your next step is nding a team that has the quality, standards and credibility you are looking for. After selecting a team for your project, you must develop a rapport with your designer so that you can discuss the topic of budget. Twenty 12 Bath

This original 1920’s bathroom served as the master, but the narrow conguration made it dicult for even one person to maneuver. The homeowners were ready for a master bath that was in keeping with their needs and style.

A true master bath was created by stealing space from an adjacent room, allowing to widen and create a his and hers set up, bringing this bath from nineteen twenty to twenty twelve. Warm neutral tones were used to create a peaceful spa like feel.

This kitchen did not complement the beauty and style of this elegant Virginia home. The poortrac ow of this galley style design made its function as unattractive as its appearance.

The elegance of the beautiful white cabinetry paired with classic oak, modernized by a dark true nish, will allow this kitchen to remain timeless. The kitchen’s new classic look becomes the perfect back drop for incorporating accent pieces that draw from current design trends. The removal of the wall to the great roomand the introduction of an island changed the trac ow and improved the view and function of the space.

The designer will incorporate this knowledge into a new space plan that ts the client’s needs, wants and style. Your designer should be able to guide you through the selection process so that your material choices evoke the look and maintenance you have set out to achieve. The next crucial member of your transformation team is your contractor. It is important to select a reputable, licensed contractor who has a great working relationship with your kitchen and bath specialist. The contractor will execute the vision of the designer. Your contractor should be able to educate you on the structural limitations of the existing space, the requirements of local building codes and oer creative and economical solutions to logistical issues. A collaborative relationship between the designer and the contractor will encourage a broader range of possibilities.

This master bath was a maze of small rooms lined withwallpaper and accented with color tiles and brass xtures. Many walls were removed and the space was transformed by a black and white color palette enhanced with accents of glass and polished chrome. One rule of budget savvy designing is “small choices can make a big impact on the cost.” The rst, and often the most impact-ful, is the choice of the cabinetry manufacturer. Here at Ewing Cabinet Company, we work with a variety of cabinet lines, each of which has specic oerings geared to dierent styles and budgets. Our designers will help you choose the cabinet line that is best for your project. Within each line, decisions can be made that will have a positive impact on the budget without negatively impacting the look of the space. For example, many cabinet lines have multiple options for the drawer front. The simplest kind is a slab drawer front and a more elaborate option is a decorative ve piece front. This may seem like a minor choice but it can make a signicant impact on overall cost. Customers can select their favorite door and add savings by pairing it with a simple slab style drawer. This budget friendly choice is now a clean, crisp backdrop for some elegant hardware.

Another area in which a homeowner often has a strong preference is wood species. Again, there are still ways to make educated decisions so that the nal look is not compromised by the budget. For example, when a customer wants the richness of cherry but the budget would lend itself more to maple, a less expensive alternative, the designer can propose several scenarios. The rst scenario would be to put a cherry-like stain on the Maple wood species. The second scenario would be to provide a way to oset the upgrade cost for cherry. The choice of door style is an excellent way to do to this.

Glam Kitchen

The client wanted an overall classic kitchen but fresh space, so we added transitional elements to give it an updated look. This kitchen now has high fashion accents like black lacquer trim, full mirror backsplash that runs up behind the glass cabinets, and two crystal and chrome chandeliers. Great storage accessories such as a magic blind corner and a pull out for cutting boards, just to name a few, keeps the clients organized.

T he transformation of a new space begins with careful planning. When starting a new remodeling project such as a kitchen or bathroom, it is important to nd a certied and/or accredited kitchen and bath specialist. This person will become your advisor as well as your designer. He or she should be able to evaluate your space, not only for aesthetic updates but also improvements to the functionality and ow of the space.

A talented designer will be able to evaluate trac patterns, storage needs, function of neighboring rooms, current amenities and structural hindrances such as windows and doorways.

B E F O R E

This glamorous kitchen was born when we had the ability to remove two walls in the former space. Specically, we relocated a laundry room, removed a doorway to the basement and opened up the kitchen to the breakfast nook. These major changes allowed the designer to address some major space planning issues.

The former space was completely cramped and uninviting. The client enjoys cooking, specically while entertaining, to make it a social experience with guests. We kept the cook top in the center of the room for this reason but made the island much larger on either side. With the removal of a basement door, the designer was able to keep trac ow to the outside of the island allowing the cook to have an uninterrupted workspace. The built-in Subzero Refrigeration was integrated seamlessly into the cabinetry and is in good location to the cook and guests at the bar area. The bar area stands outside of the work zone for anyone to help themselves. The pop up at the island allows visitors to naturally gather around for conversation. The six inch legs on the corner of the island were placed at a 45 degree angle for drama. The built in oven was raised above standard for ergonomic purposes.

Selecting a simpler door will balance the percentage increase of the cherry wood species. This same principle of “small changes can make a big impact in savings” can be applied to the other areas of the design such as counter-top selection, backsplash options, and design elements. A knowledgeable designer will educate his or her client on the options available while making recommendations that are in tune with the overall look and in keeping with the budget.

Another rule of thumb for budget conscious designing is “the more informa-tion the better.” The more a designer knows about the likes and dislikes of the client, the better prepared he or she is to create the perfect space while staying within the budget. The use of inspiration photographs and conver-sation can give the designer a better picture of the “must-haves”, the “can live with outs” and the “can’t stands”. The designer will lead in a discussionof give and takes so that the client makes informed decisions about their nal selections. Knowing that every selection along the way impacts the style, function, and budget, an informed designer will develop a compre-hensive plan that meets the client’s needs. E

This large kitchen was hidden away at the back of the house making access to and from the space dicult. The unusual placement of the spiral staircase, heavy molding and oversized cherry cabinetry was dated and confusing. The arched entrance way provided the necessary passage from the front of the house to the new heart of the home.A neutral palette with a variety of textures takes this kitchen from drab to fabulous.

STEEL STRENGTH

Clean lines of the slab door style and continuous hardware in combination with the dark Maple cabinets and crisp white countertops provided just what the homeowner longed for. Attention to details such as the integrated full height backsplash and the waterfall leg of the peninsula ensured that the desired contemporary look was achieved.
