A MESSAGE FROM EVS CEO MURIEL DE LATHOUWER

What are your goals for EVS?

EVS will remain focused on what we do best: live. We will continue to build on our DNA that includes expertise in live, reliability, pragmatic innova-tions, excellence in support, and customer intimacy. EVS keeps reinforcing its core technology founded on an intelligent live video produc-tion server with a series of building blocks – hardware, software, web platforms, in-tegrations – that create more capabilities for live content producers We enable them to tell better stories faster, more efficiently and deliver content to wider and new audiences. Ultimately EVS’ goal is to help

customers in its four targeted markets (sport, entertainment, news and media) get more val-ue out of their content.

How do you see today’s mar-ketplace and EVS’ next phase of leadership?

Today’s fast-changing mar-ket offers both opportunities and threats for broadcasters and content owners. There is continuous buzz around new technologies: IP, 4K, 8K, cloud, second screen, virtual reality, etc. and our customers are wondering if and when they need to change their infra-structure to adapt to these trends. Our role is to guide customers, support them in their jobs and understand

what innovation makes sense to improve their viewers’ ex-perience. This is exactly what EVS has been doing for years with future-proof technology like the XT3 or XS that enable our customers to meet new demands, get more out of live and meet new technology standards.

You have an interesting and diverse technology back-ground. What’s the common thread throughout your experience?

I’ve had the opportunity throughout my career to work with different parts of the digital value chain - content producers, cable operators and mobile telecom players, consumer electronics and, with EVS, video production. The defined roles within this digital value chain are blurring, with multiple actors playing new roles. We’re seeing ex-tremely rapid convergence of the broadcast/media, IT and telecom realms. Innovation and improvement of consumer experience are the common thread.

There’s so much change and innovation happening in me-dia and entertainment. What excites you most about today’s landscape?

I think it boils down to this con-vergence. While challenging, it’s tremendously exciting. It’s opening up new opportunities for innovation and new ways for consumers to enjoy content of all types. It’s a new world and I believe EVS is well posi-tioned to be at the heart of it.

IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR, EVS ANNOUNCED  MURIEL DE LATHOUWER AS ITS NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CEO. MURIEL IS NO STRANGER TO EVS OR TO THE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY. THIS SEASONED VETERAN AND VISIONARY GEARS UP FOR HER FIRST NAB AS EVS HEAD.

C-CAST DELIVERS A BIG GOAL FOR ROGERS NHL GAMECENTER LIVE Rogers NHL GameCenter LIVE is making it easier than ever for hockey fans throughout Canada to watch their favorite team, by providing live streaming video, live stats, video on demand, archival footage and unseen game angles to fans’ mobile devices. It’s easy to see the boom in multiscreen content delivery. Consumers are hungry for live content that they can consume and share on mobile devices. Venue owners, content own-ers and rights hol ders are racing to provide enhanced live experiences, build brand loyalty and create more reve-nue opportu nities. Best of all, talented developers have the ideas and the ingenuity to cre-ate apps that accomplish all of these goals.

To meet the growing demand for compelling multimedia con-tent, EVS launched the C-Cast APPlied Challenge. Developers were challenged to develop a second-screen experience that uses EVS’ C-Cast content distri-bution platform to reinvent live event media consumption.

EVS received an overwhelming response to its first APPlied contest. At the end of judging, four winners were recognized for creating a mobile application that significantly heightens the experience of live TV audiences.

BURST – Gets fans in on the action by broadcasting user-generated content

Burst is an innovative mobile video platform that enables me-dia companies to crowdsource authentic videos from fans and reporters. It then delivers them directly to broadcast TV, digital sites, social media channels and/or in-venue screens in near real-time. Once received, me-dia companies to broadcasters can integrate the mobile video into their existing live and stu-dio production workflows and create engaging viewing experi-ences across any screen.

CHIRPVISION – Engages fans with personalized live and on-demand content

ChirpVision’s live event plat-form, EventHorizon, offers in-stadium fans the opportu-nity see more action, instantly delivered by C-Cast technology to their mobile devices. Fans can stream and search live and on-demand content and access slow-motion replays and mul-ti-camera content. The system publishes directly to social me-dia, generating huge exposure and awareness, but brings fans back to the team and event websites to create new oppor-tunities for engagement and monetization.

INTELLICORE – Delivers com-prehensive team, game, and player information at a touch

Leveraging its Playrz sport platform, Intellicore’s appli-cation gives every fan instant access to a world of information about thier favorite players and teams while providing up-to-the-minute game details and the latest news. Successfully

implemented at the FIBA World Championship, Intellicore uses the extensive metadata capa-bilities of C-Cast to give viewers access to exclusive content – including multiple camera an-gles, VoD videos and statistics – whenever they want it.

LIVELIKE – Taps users into a virtual reality that adds anoth-er dimension to events

LiveLike’s virtual reality app simulates being at the venue inside a VIP suite. Viewers are up close to the action during the live event but benefit from addi-tional special viewing features. Through the use of a virtual reality headset, users can aug-ment their viewing experience, calling up exclusive C-Cast mul-ti-angle replays on demand that are integrated into the action as

the game unfolds. The app also allows viewers to easily switch between different games and different sports.

With the Epsio FX live graph-ics module, it just takes the input of simple parameters to add artistic replay effects, and highlights enhancements.

Welcome to the newest mem -ber of the family. Epsio FX Reveal Mode allows you to integrate synchronized exter-nal data with your replays for more informative and com-pelling action.

Imagine this scenario: The clock is winding down in a close basketball game, the player shoots and scores - after the buzzer. The only valid proof that the ball left the shooter’s hand before the clock ran out is the time display. With Epsio FX Reveal Mode, you can accurately broadcast the time on the first

replay, moving back and forth to show the exact moment when the ball left the player’s hand.

Alongside LSM and LSM Connect, Epsio FX Reveal Mode enables you to add dimension to replays and verify any measureable sports event. As with all Epsio FX products, you’ll save post-production costs and potential headaches.

NBCUniversal’s top-rated entertainment news show, Access Hollywood, once again turned to EVS for the most ad-vanced live studio production workflow. An EVS upgrade in 2010 took the California-based facility to a tapeless work-flow driven by EVS’ XT server, IPDirector asset management suite and IPEdit non-linear ed-iting module. Four years later an explosion of new content formats and a changing media landscape necessitated anoth-er upgrade.

“Ours is an XDCAM world that requires a lot of conversion

during ingest,” said Erick Diaz, technical operations manager, Access Hollywood/NBCUniversal. The new system takes a leap forward, anchored by EVS’ XS media production server designed for fast-turna-round productions.

Based on its powerful dual net-working broadcasting and IT capabilities, XS makes recorded media instantly available across the production network. This means content is available for simultaneous preview, rough editing, archiving, playback and post-production. Supporting a wide range of formats and

codec configurations, the XS fits all types of workflows while streamlining media transfers and better preserving quality.

“The EVS upgrade allows us to share files seamlessly with greater speed and efficien-cy; our central playback from Avid is now four times faster,” continued Diaz.

The system also features high-bandwidth 10GigE con-nectivity, allowing high-speed file delivery to and from the EVS system.

EVS’ workflow and transfer tool Xsquare is also part of the new

studio, easily handling all media transfers, content transcod-ing and orchestration of all load-balancing tasks. Together the new solutions speed up the entire production process and eliminate the waiting time re-quired with manual conversion.

As with the prior EVS system, the workflow must integrate seamlessly with tools such as Avid Media Composer and in-cludes the use of EVS tools such as IPEdit for extensive real-time and on-the-fly editing.

“It’s always interesting to see the new and creative ways our

team uses EVS tools,” added Diaz. “They’re experts with the equipment and their ingenuity is impressive.”

Henry Alexander, EVS’SVP, Market and Product, puts it all into perspective. “It’s a coop-erative process and working with programs like Access Hollywood keeps us all innovat-ing and evolving.”

MARCH MADNESS COVERAGE A SLAM DUNK FOR EVS

RAMP UP YOUR STORYTELLING WITH THE NEW REVEAL MODEEvery year the advent of spring

brings not an illness but a kind of fever – for basketball. March Madness, the annual NCAA col-lege basketball tournament, is one of the biggest US sports events of the year. And if you watched the games this year, odds are EVS solutions deliv-ered the action.

This year’s entire NCAA Tour-nament production marks the first time that CBS Sports and Turner Sports deployed a com-plete file-based workflow at all its game sites and the networks’ New York City and Atlanta com-mand centers.

At CBS Sports’ broadcast center in NYC, an EVS IPDirector live content management system managed ingest feeds from the tournament sites as well as metadata and logging for all the games. Avid editing was ena-bled, providing content sharing

and metadata exchange to the production environment.

An EVS Xstore central storage system provided a solid back-bone for sharing content among the production staff – who re-viewed upwards of 14TB of in-bound file transfers per night.

EVS XT3 servers were also at the heart of the infrastructure inside the remote trucks. The F&F Productions mobile units at the Final Four compound used XT3 servers as the back-bone of a new, fully file-based, 10-gigabit workflow that had all broadcast sites in Indianapolis connecting and sharing more seamlessly.

With the new workflow, CBS Sports was able to produce more tournament replays and highlights, faster and more effi-ciently, than ever before. > READ MORE

MULTIPLE SOURCES AND FORMATS.ONE FRONT END.

PAINLESS.

We all know the nightmare caused by today’s many con-tent formats. No longer. Now EVS realizes the dream of wor-ry-free content ingest with the Ingest Funnel, a standalone solution that makes content ingest – of all sources – easy, streamlined and painless.

You asked. We answered: Ingest Funnel

In recent years, studios and broadcasters have all shared the same complaint: the ex-plosion of file formats, rasters, codecs and closed caption for-mats makes it a nightmare to handle varying content for efficient, fast-turnaround play-out, post-production, archiving

and mastering operations. And often there are as many dif-ferent ways to capture content as there are flavors of formats. EVS overcame this challenge with a simple and easy-to-use solution even while the work-flow for managing, monetizing and repurposing media con-tent has become increasingly complex.

Ingest Funnel is a unique front-end solution that successfully transforms, legalizes and masters all ingest formats and content, towards ready-to-air, archive and post-production formats.

Using a simple and single front-end, media managers facilitate

a unique automated process governed by efficient IT-based principles. The system works by analyzing content and au-tomatically selecting the right tool, whether an EVS solution or third-party component. Best of all, this web-based appli-cation can be run remotely, without requiring additional specialized skills. An intuitive HTML5-based interface and simplified workflow enables us-ers without additional technical knowledge to ingest content through easy steps.

The Funnel ingests formats including files (MP4, MXF, AS-11, IMF, etc.), ENG sources, video feeds, tapes and IP streams

from wide-ranging sources. A built-in workflow management system analyzes and transforms the content, changing its format as required to meet specific customer specifications. It can then perform QC functions and legalize content - all fully controlled through workflow automation. At the conclusion of the funnel, content can be delivered to any shared storage or MAM solution.

A highly functional mix of IT and broadcast technologies, the Ingest Funnel uses Business Process Management (BPM) practices for advanced file processing and standardized notation through an intuitive

graphical workflow designer and MXF support. A distributed service-oriented architecture (SOA) allows services to be simply and cost effectively added or deleted for a highly scalable solution that can be easily duplicated at multiple locations.

Sound too good to be true? Contact your local sales manager. It’s time to realize what a solution that handles all content formats can do for you.

Through EVS’ IPLink plug-in extension panel for Adobe Premiere Pro CC, editors can enjoy high-speed access to live content while content is still being ingested.  Sear-ching through logging and clip metadata, locating content from live bins, previe wing without committing to final con tent and bringing all fast-

paced multicamera content in-to their edits is now fast and easy.  Adobe Anywhere brings the next degree of power to environments that need to colla-borate and define best team-based editing solutions for fast-action productions.

For EVS’ Henry Alexander, it’s an evolution of EVS’ partner-ship with Adobe. “By extending

our offering with  Adobe  Any-where, we’re giving editors vital collaborative capabilities and im me diate editing visibility to much larger teams. This impor-tant step in our partner ship with Adobe brings our editing work-flows, integrated live content management and storage solu-tions to the next level.”

SINGAPORE’S MEDIACORP GOES BIG WITH AN ALL HD, END-TO-END NEWS WORKFLOWAs Singapore’s leading me-dia company, MediaCorp has numerous platforms - television, radio, newspa-pers, magazines, movies, digital and out-of-home media – and lots of content to manage. To ensure their leadership position and provide the best possible coverage, they’ve selected an end-to-end, state-of-the-art news production work-flow from EVS. The solution will be implemented at the company’s new facilities in Mediapolis, the country’s digital media hub now under construction.

When fully implement-ed later this year, the EVS

News PAM (production asset management) system will provide infrastructure for 56 HD-SDI channels, 500TB of central storage equivalent to 12,000 hours of HD content (plus 20,000 hours of low res) and more than 500 journalist editing stations.

While the size and scope of this installation is impres-sive, the critically important elements for live news work-flows – speed and reliability – are the same whether sys-tems are large or small. The workflow also provides instant access to all of the content so essential to pro-ductivity and ultimately to

the quality of MediaCorp’s far-reaching programming.

The integrated solution will facilitate all aspects of modern news production, from recording to playout, including central shared storage and archiving, high- and low-resolution client browsing, onsite and remote editing, playout and NRCS integration.

MediaCorp joins other ma-jor broadcasting networks across the globe that trust EVS to provide the speed, reliability and integration so important in today’s rapidly evolving and lightening-fast news environment.

beIN SPORTS brings many of the world’s prime sporting events to life in four languages across more than 30 countries around the globe. Rebranded from Al Jazeera Sports to beIN SPORTS in 2014, the company is headquartered in Doha, Qatar.

The broadcaster turned to EVS technology for its unique new beIN SPORTS MAX Highlights Service. Part of the central-ized production operations at its headquarters, the work-flow facilitates the creation of highlights packages - including content ingest, management and storage - used in the net-work’s wide-ranging sports broadcasts.

Given the nature of beIN SPORTS’ programming, high-lights functionality is critical. Operators must have immediate access to content during ingest and global offices need the ability to search, view and use highlight packages remotely. Any work-flow also must integrate quickly and easily with third-party ele-ments such as edit suites, while remaining scalable to fit in with the network’s expansion plans. EVS products were already in place as part of a centralized in-gest and playout center, which meant that beIN SPORTS knew the speed, reliability and innova-tive integration of EVS solutions.

As a result, EVS technology was implemented at every point in the new highlights system. Five XT3 servers sit at the heart of the workflow to ingest content. This allows beIN SPORTS to record up to 20 live HD SDI feeds

simultaneously while using up to ten channels for output, which are used for content review and delay playout. CleanEdit soft-ware is optimized specifically for sports highlights production and uses ingested content to create highlights in two-, five- or 25-minute edits.

XTAccess units, controlled by an Xsquare interface, gen-erate low-resolution files, allowing users to instantly manage content and begin ed-iting. IPDirector integrates the workflow and XStore storage features third-party integration with Adobe Premiere Pro and other systems, a critically im-portant aspect of the workflow. Editors benefit from instant access to content while logs are still being created.

IPWeb’s online interface allows content in the XStore central storage system to be viewed and searched anywhere in the world.

The new workflow delivers a comprehensive and innovative way of quickly and efficiently ingesting, managing, delivering and storing a huge amount of live content. The integration of EVS solutions doesn’t offer just a singular benefit to beIN SPORTS, but an entirely new end-to-end production solution.

Summing up the project, Jérôme Wauthoz, EVS’ market solution manager said, “The ambitious nature of this work-flow’s functionality is something that’s perfectly suited to EVS technology and is just the kind project we thrive on.”

NAB INSIGHTS FROM EVS SVP MARKET & PRODUCT, HENRY ALEXANDER

What’s new from EVS at the NAB Show?

There’s a lot to see this year. We’re showcasing signifi-cant enhancements to indus-try- trusted solutions, like the new Multicam engine for the XT3 server. Multicam 14.0 is giving more capabilities to the XT3, with increased SuperMo-tion camera configurations (up to two SuperMotion 6X camera recordings with two addition-al recording and playout chan-nels available). New ingest and playout options with the XS server for studios and 192 au-dio channels/MADI support are coupled by added IPDirector capabilities for faster ingest, management, exchange and contribution.

New tools for the LSM environ-ment including Epsio FX Re-veal enable the integration of external data - think biometrics sensors, chrono, etc. - instantly embedded into live motion re-plays as graphics insertions for truly compelling and efficient storytelling. For stadium control rooms, IPDirector content tools

will show HD and 4K advance-ments. For multi-camera stu-dio productions, we’re showing how IPDirector brings recording sessions to the post-production stage efficiently and with col-laborative workflows, evidenced by our new integration with Adobe Anywhere for collabora-tive editing and new, fast-turn-around 4K editing workflows. Our C-Cast content distribu-tion platform, along with Fan-Cast, are powerful solutions for bringing customized content franchises direct to consumers that can open up new revenue avenues for rights owners.

How are your new product offerings different from what’s available in the market?

EVS is always pushing the boundaries of what can be done with live content. We provide ways to enhance content production and delivery, making it faster and easier, without compromising on reliability. One of our new-est products, the Ingest Funnel, is a multi-source and multi-format, HTML5-

based front-end solution, which employs Business Pro-cess Management (BPM) practices for advanced file processing. It’s a perfect ex-ample of how EVS is removing complexity from live manage-ment workflows and meeting demands for more and faster content delivery to multiple au-diences.

In addition, we’ll unveil the industry’s only 4K-ready, IT/software-based switcher system, DYVI. This revolution-ary production system offers unprecedented capabilities with flexible, distributed produc-tion architecture (for manag-ing real-time content between multiple sites and across mul-tiple continents), fully expand-able I/O processing modules, unparalleled creative capa-bilities (conditional macros, RAMrecorder) as well as new 4K-ready features. And, DYVI’s simple and flexible panel con-figuration scales to fit any type of production, large or small.

What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trend at NAB 2015?

The demand for 4K will continue to be a significant topic as we’re now moving from the experi-mental and testing phase that we’ve seen over the last year to full-scale 4K deployments. More broadly, customers are feeling the pressure to save re-sources and streamline work-flows more strongly than ever, so innovations around these areas are tremendously signif-icant. Finally, remote produc-tion, IP-enabled solutions and multiplatform distribution are trends driving a transition in the industry – realities that broad-casters, content owners, rights owners and venues all share if they want to stay ahead.

AND THEY’RE OFF! EVS GETS MEDIAPRO RACE-READY FOR F1 LATIN AMERICA

MEDIAPRO group, exclusive rights holder to F1 in Latin America (excluding Brazil), upgraded its production workflows with EVS for the launch of its new 24/7 F1 channel, F1 LATIN AMÉRICA. The channel launched on March 1 and will cover all F1, GP2 and GP3 races as well as exclusive interviews, analysis and reports on each championship.

To provide 24 hours of con-tent, 11 EVS XT series production servers receive up to seven feeds directly from Formula One Management (FOM), including the princi-pal transmission, redundant and personalized signals, on-board camera feeds and information about the circuit. Files are ingested directly into an EVS XStore shared storage of 200TB – after being logged and enriched with metadata. The addition of XTAccess and Xedio CleanEdit has readied the workflow for the launch of the new channel.

The EVS-equipped studios and the new integration of Xedio CleanEdit in the pro-duction workflow means editors are able to instantly work on content as soon as it’s transferred to the SAN shared storage. The Xedio CleanEdit software enables edits with multiple resolu-tions (SD/HD) and varying aspect ratios in the same timeline while offering a seamless integration with the

EVS XT series servers that are in place.

The workflow enhance-ment is completed with new XTAccess units, which are dedicated to transferring files from the central SAN storage to the Snell play out channel-in-a-box server. XTAccess simplifies this exchange, guaranteeing the maximum levels of integration with third-party systems.

This new installation at its Barcelona production facili-ties assures MEDIAPRO that F1 LATIN AMÉRICA has the highest quality and most re-liable production processes available to deliver broadcast content to its viewers. It also enables MEDIAPRO to deliv-er F1 content to viewers via its second screen app, which features live camera feeds, content highlights and social media integration.

Xavier Verd, CTO at Unitecnic – the technical services com-pany of the MEDIAPRO Group – and project director for F1 LATIN AMÉRICA said: “The flexibility and scalability of the EVS platform has enabled us to easily integrate with a new automated channel playout system. We’re able to increase the production efficiency in a very quick and timely fashion and as a result, successfully launched the channel on time.
