Co-Creating Community...11

Dear Friend,

For many years my life lacked a sense of community.

I’m not sure when this feeling came about, but I suspect it

was a product of my children growing and leaving the

nest. As a family unit I had that sense of clan, kinship and

a self-made community. After the girls moved out, I wan-

dered for years searching for something I didn’t know was

missing. Something I didn’t realize was missing, that is,

until I found it again in a different form.

Eight months ago I opened the Evolving Magazine Conscious Living Center. I

envisioned providing an outlet for our readers to experientially live the topics dis-

cussed in the magazine. What I didn’t expect was the incredible sense of community

that I received. Each month, the “home” of Evolving is filled with laughter; everyone

so happy as they connect and grow and experience tender moments. It’s a blessing I

didn’t know I sought, but I am grateful nonetheless.

This month, were taking community to a new level with the Conscious Living

Festival. Set on three acres at the center, we’ll have two days of music, laughter, edu-

cation and connection. I hope you’ll join us for this exciting event June 14 and 15.

There will be a raffle to benefit the Rime Homeless Outreach Program. If you feel

the desire to volunteer, several people are needed to help out both days. Email me if

you are able to volunteer for any portion of the festival.

And enjoy this issue of Evolving Magazine on creating community!

Where’s My Sanity? Stories that Help

"You can't attain sanity by just trying harder to be a better person, exercising a positive outlook, letting go, working on being happier, forgiving or meditating,” says Dr. Claudia Luiz. “These all might be great ideas. They may even lead to self-improvement. But what you need for sanity, when reason fails, are emotional experiences. Not ideas. Experiences." Many books claim they can rescue you from confu-sion, unhappiness and agitation. And even the best self-help programs for change can fail us. According to Dr. Luiz, sanity isn't where you've been looking. In her groundbreaking new book, Where's My San-ity? Stories that Help, Dr. Luiz delivers a unique and refreshing set of stories about the experiences that have been most effective for her patients. Included are stories about people suffering with our most common modern-day afflictions – from depression, the effects of womanizing, and having difficult teenagers, to be-ing stuck or agitated – and then what transpires to make things better. Drawing from her more than twenty-five years of treating people, Dr. Luiz reveals a new method for change and how you too can experi-ence it. Endorsed by the National Association for the Ad-vancement of Psychoanalysis and by the Society of Modern Analysis, Where’s My Sanity? reveals nine scenarios where Dr. Luiz details the emotional experi-ences that have been most effective for her and her patients. Then, with this new knowledge, you can start searching for powerful emotional experiences your-self. At the end of each story, anticipating what you might want to know more about, Dr. Luiz presents questions, answers and lessons she’s learned.

10% Happier How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress

Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That

Actually Works—A True Story ABC News anchor Dan Harris has found a way to be happier, calmer and—according to his wife—nicer in the midst of one of the most competitive careers on earth. And if it can work for someone as skepti-cal and stress-prone as him, it can proba-bly work for you, too. It’s a far cry from the heal-your-life, solve-all-your-problems over-promising of self-help. What Dan stumbled upon is practical, doable, and scientifically researched. In a new book, Dan tells this story as only a reporter can: through deep research, tough questions, and a healthy dose of humor. 10% HAPPIER: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress With-out Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works—A True Story (!t Books; Pub Date: March 11, 2014; $25.99), is part investigation and part immersive journalism: one man’s acci-

dental quest to boost his happiness quo-tient without losing his professional drive. Working his way from local television to the bright lights of network news, Har-ris had always believed the restless, re-lentless, impossible-to-satisfy voice in his head was one of his greatest assets. How else can you climb the ladder in field like TV news without hand-wringing and hy-per-vigilance? For a while, his strategy worked. Harris anchored national broad-casts; he covered wars. Then he made a series of poor decisions in his personal life that culminated in a televised panic attack in front of an audience of millions. What happened next was completely unforeseen. Through a bizarre series of events involving a disgraced evangelical pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a fateful gift from his wife, Harris discov-ered something that helped him tame the voice in his head: meditation. At first, he was deeply suspicious. He had long associated meditation with bearded swamis and unwashed hippies. But after learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essen-tially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who

are now using the practice to boost their focus, reduce their addiction to technolo-gy, and stop being yanked around by their emotions. Stacks of books on meditation piled up by his bedside, and Harris became a daily meditator, starting with 5 (excruciating) minutes. Before long, he found himself on a ten-day silent meditation retreat, which in a flash, went from the most annoying to the most incredible experience he’d ever had. But meditation did not transform Har-ris's life into a parade of rainbows and unicorns. Life’s problems still reared their heads. Could he use meditation to navi-gate a series of fresh career crises? Is it possible to be "zen" and successful? Written with candor and a wicked sense of humor, 10% HAPPIER is a spir-itual book written for, and by, someone who would otherwise never read a spiritu-al book. It is both a serious and a serious-ly funny look at mindfulness and medita-tion as the next big public health revolu-tion. Dan Harris is co-anchor of ABC News’ Nightline and also co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning Ameri-ca.

T ime is a very pre-cious commodity so giving it can be

a great gift. Volunteering is encouraged in the United States and there are many opportunities to be part of our local communities by giving our time and talents.

Surprisingly the receiver gets as much or more than he or she gives. There is a growing body of research that indicates volunteering, in addition to social benefits, offers great health bene-fits. According to the Corporation for Na-tional & Community Service, “Those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression.” Older volunteers are more likely to receive greater benefits from vol-unteering. HELPGUIDE.org authors, Joanna Saisan, M.S.W., Melinda Smith, M.A. and Gina Kemp, M.A. cite four benefits to vol-unteering:

Connects You to Others Volunteers often create programs, staff them and give countless hours to better

the community in so many ways. Being a volunteer gives back by helping a person make new friends, expand the personal network and provide an opportunity to practice social skills. Volunteering with friends or family can be a way to deepen our existing connections while making new ones.

Good For Your Mind and Body Volunteering increases self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. It can also reduce depression by giving one a sense of purpose and ending social isola-tion, one of the key risk factors for depres-sion. States with the highest rates of vol-unteerism have lower rates of mortality and heart disease. A study by the London School of Economics in a large group of American adults found that the more peo-ple volunteered the happier they were. The rate of happiness for people who vol-unteered monthly went up seven percent, 12 percent for people who volunteered two to four times a month and sixteen percent for those who volunteered weekly. Inter-estingly this hike in happiness is compara-ble to having a yearly income of $75,000-$100,000 versus $20,000.

Can Advance Your Career: Volunteering can help you get experi-ence in your area of interest and meet people in the field. It also gives you an opportunity to practice skills needed in the workplace such as teamwork, commu-nication, problem solving, project plan-ning, task management and organization. You can try a career without any long-term commitment. In addition to experi-ence you may receive extensive training. You may be improving skills you already have while helping the community. Volun-teering hours are required for some schol-arships, are viewed positively for admis-sion to some schools or programs. Many businesses also look favorably upon one’s volunteer contributions.

Brings Fun and Fulfillment to Your Life Volunteering can give us an opportunity to experience a different kind of work. For example, you may have a sedentary desk job and would enjoy a community garden, leading local hikes or helping at a chil-dren’s camp. It can be a way to explore interests and passions, find an energizing escape from your day-to-day routine. Studies have found there is a

‘volunteering threshold.’ Those who vol-unteered at least one to two hours a week (about 100 hours a year) had the largest benefit. As the first of the large Baby Boomer population (1946-1964) enter the retire-ment age, a large group of people is availa-ble to help solve community problems. Volunteering is the gift that keeps on giv-ing. Give yourself a gift — try it!

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 9 June 2014

W hen my sis died from sui-cide a long

time ago, I learned there was a lot more to grief than I could ever imag-ine. When someone we care about experiences a

loss, words often fail us. It may leave us stammering for the right thing to say. For those in their grief, they feel pain and sadness; they may share more tears than words. No words are needed. Be present.

Our grief takes many forms: death, illness, car wrecks, financial woes, mov-ing away, loss of friends, loss of a pet, etc.

Doing nothing at all helps no one. Hundreds of folks showed up for my sister’s wake. They spilled into the street waiting to offer sympathy. Abundance of food arrived each day. It is not high on the fun list; but do attend the funeral or wake. It shows you care. Sympathy cards help as well. Calls help. Even if it goes to voice mail, just say thinking of you and sending a prayer. They may feel too numb to talk.

Psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her 1969 book, On Death and Dying, was inspired by her work with terminally ill patients and is now largely accepted by the public. The stages are: 1. Denial, 2. Anger, 3. Bargaining, 4. Depression and 5. Acceptance. This includes all feelings such as blame, self-pity, sadness, fear and anxiety.

In January this year my best friend’s father died after a long illness. It felt good to listen to her: and, if helpful, share my experiences around death. I knew she felt my empathy. One’s beliefs about death may vary. The good that comes is that it teaches us how much we love and matter to one another.

A friend and I had lost contact. When I read on Facebook that her hus-band, who had been to our house for dinner many times, had died young at age 57 of cancer, I felt so bad. I didn’t know he had been ill. I called her and she remained calm as I wept. “You didn’t have time to prepare,” she said to me. He left us the gift of renewing our friend-ship.

A few guidelines:

#1Grief belongs to the griever: Do not talk…Listen! Allow them their grief. It is a personal experience.

#2Stay present and state the truth. It's tempting to make statements about the past or the future when your friend’s life holds so much pain. Avoid using clichés such as, “They finished their work here" or “They are in a better place." Stick with the truth: "This hurts. I’m sorry. I love you." #3 Do not try to fix the unfixable. Your friend's loss cannot be fixed or repaired or solved. The pain must be felt. #4 Anticipate Avoid saying, "Call me if you need anything," as your friend will not call. Because identifying a need and then making a phone call may be light years beyond her capacity. Make concrete of-fers: "I will be there at 4 p.m. on Thurs-day and take you grocery shopping," or "I will walk your dog tomorrow.” #5 Be Sensitive to Their Wants That empty water bottle beside the sofa may look like trash, but may have been left there by her husband just the other day. His shirts and pillowcases may be the last things that still smell like him. #6 Do pro jec ts toge ther There may be difficult tasks that need to get done such as cleaning drawers and closets. Your presence is powerful and important. #7 Love Above all, show your love. Be willing to stand beside the gaping hole that opened in your friend's life without turn-ing away. My friend kept saying, “My heart is so broken.” Be willing to not have any answers. “I know,” I said, “So Sorry. I love you.” Be strong enough for them to lean upon you.

D e p r e s s i o n t r e a t m e n t used to have

a very good outcome. If you went to your phys ic i an w i th symptoms of depres-sion 30 to 40 years ago, he or she would tell you that you could and would get

better. You’d be assured that most depres-sion episodes run their course without specific interventions such as drug treat-ment. Now advertisements that all but hypnotize you into believing that this drug or that will help you feel better – especial-ly if it turns out that you’re one of the two-thirds of people on antidepressants who aren’t getting better. When it comes to side effects, many people are aware of the most common ones, such as sexual dysfunction and se-dation. And if you go back to the TV, you’ll see that some of these negative ef-fects are mentioned in the ads. Other side effects, such as substantial weight gain, increased glucose and impaired lipid me-tabolism, can be so unpleasant that peo-ple on these drugs just stop taking them. Exercise: One of Nature’s Best Al-ternatives to Maintaining Good Mental Health A Duke University team studied three groups that tried exercise only; exercise plus drugs; and drugs only, to see what treatment best treated depression. They found that after six weeks, the drug-only group was doing a tiny bit better than the other two groups. The drug used was Zoloft. They hypothesized that the best stay-well rate would be those with drugs plus exercise. Ten months later, it was the exercise-only group that was most suc-cessful. "Simply taking a pill is very passive," said study leader James Blumenthal. "Patients who exercised may have felt a greater sense of mastery over their condi-tion and gained a greater sense of accom-plishment. They may have felt more self-confident and competent because they were able to do it themselves, and at-tributed their improvement to their ability to exercise. “Findings from these studies indicate that a modest exercise program is an effective treatment for patients with major depression. And if these motivated patients continue with their exercise, they have a much better chance of not seeing their depression return.”

Nutrition Also Plays an Important Part It’s already known that many additives, preservatives and food colorants can cause behavioral changes as well as sugar and gluten grains. One of the most recent and highly plausible theories that explain sugar’s impact on your mood and mental health is the connection between sugar and chronic inflammation. As explained by Dr. Russell Blaylock, high sugar con-tent and starchy carbohydrates lead to excessive insulin release, which can lead to falling blood sugar levels, or hypoglyce-mia. Hypoglycemia, in turn, causes your brain to secrete glutamate in levels that can cause agitation, depression, anger, anxiety, panic attacks and an increase in suicide risk. The dietary answer for treat-ing depression is to severely limit sugars, especially fructose, as well as most grains. How the Sun Can Influence a “Sunnier Disposition” Another essential nutrient in the treat-ment of depression is vitamin D. One study found people with the lowest levels of vitamin D were 11 times more prone to be depressed. Have your physician check your vitamin D level. What To Do if You’re Already on Medication for Depression A cautious approach to discontinuing prescription drugs is advised with the assistance of a qualified and knowledgea-ble clinician. Ideally, this would be someone who has roots in natural health, and who will help you use natural, healthy options such as dietary changes, exercise, and relaxation techniques. Assessing neurotransmitters can determine what amino acids, minerals and herbs can help naturally balance brain chemistry and can assist in helping depression, anxiety, insomnia and lack of focus. Always remember that these three primary factors — exercise, addressing emotional stress, and eating right — can make you feel at the top of your game.

Revelations—by Christine Lamb

Sage Center for Yoga

and Healing Arts

S age Center for Yoga and Healing Arts re-cently moved just two

blocks south, but their new location feels like a different world. Owner Sarah Kucera D.C. designed the layout of the space according to Vastu, the Indian version of feng shui, with the help of an Ayurvedic consultant. The result is warm and welcom-ing, with an asana room, four treatment rooms, and a chai bar in the retail/reception area. In Vastu, first the sacred center is de-termined. It is advised that this space be kept clear of obstruction or permanent structures like a wall and marked with a special symbol or decoration. At Sage the wall bordering this area has been hand-stenciled with a beautiful gold on gold design. The entire floor plan is then divid-ed into quadrants representing the ele-ments. Ideally one would place plumbing elements in the water quadrant, entrances in the air quadrant, etc. If that is not structurally possible, you can hang some-thing on the wall, a mirror or picture, or use color to invoke and/or balance the desired element. Because this center is a haven for healing, much of the design is done in warm, grounding colors, right down to the fixtures – bronze, gold and brass instead of silver and chrome, which are cooling and more stimulating. The overall effect is calm, simple and inviting. Ayurveda is often referred to as yoga's sister science and is based on the premise of the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is associated with the elements (air/ether, fire/water, and earth/water, respectively) and attributes, or gunas, from the following list: heavy/light, dull/sharp, hot/cold, oily/dry, smooth/rough, dense/liquid, soft/hard, static/mobile, subtle/gross, and cloudy/clear. Each of us has all three doshas in some combination, encompassing all the elements and their attributes to our unique degree, and our blend at birth remains our true constitution, called the prakriti. However, at any given moment this recipe may be “out of balance” due to environmental factors like diet, weather, time of life, or stress. This imbalance, or vikruti, can lead to discomfort or even disease and Ayurveda seeks to return one to balance through asana, dietary chang-es, personal practices, herbs, oils, pra-

nayama, meditation and more. Most imbalances are an indication of an excess of one or two doshas, and the treatments seek to pacify these surpluses. For exam-ple, a person with a vata imbalance might be advised to do grounding postures, oil her body, get a massage, reduce light crunchy foods like crackers and popcorn, and add steamed and root vegetables and stews. Sage is a unique yoga studio infused with Ayurve-

da at every turn. While the yoga classes are not always structured specifically on doshas, all the teachers and staff have been trained and exposed to Ayurveda and all personally practice at least some aspects. They teach being balanced rather than just giving students what they want, which is often contrary to what they need. Weather, world affairs, the seasons and other environmental factors can play a part in the composition of any given class. You're not likely to be practicing vrksasa-na, tree pose, on a crazy windy day. What sets this healing center apart is their offering of genuine Ayurvedic treat-ments like Shirodhara (warm oils poured gently over the forehead), foot massage with marma point therapy (a type of accu-pressure), guided seasonal cleanses, and personal consultations with Sarah, a Cer-tified Ayurvedic Practitioner. Ayurvedic herbs and teas are available for sale, as are personal products for use in dinachar-ya, daily routines, like tongue scrapers and dry brushes. Future treatment offer-ings will include herbal steam treatments, full-body therapeutic abhyanga (oil mas-sage), marma point massage, and more. The next nearest center that offers Ayur-vedic treatments is in Vedic City, Iowa. Come experience Sage at their Open House on June 6, 5:00-8:00pm. Patrick Shaw, author of "Chai Pilgrimage," will give a chai-making demonstration from 5-6 with different recipes to suit your Dosha. See more at http://www.experiencesage.com/open-house

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 13 June 2014

M y husband and I took a week off in

May for a juice fast. What? Take vacation time to fast? Why on earth would we do that? The short answer is that we both feel

much better after a fast. Our sleep, ener-gy, mental clarity and overall outlook improve. Our skin and eyes look bright-er. Our minds slow down and quieten leading to deeper meditation and overall peaceful countenance. I think of it as spring cleaning for body, mind and spir-it. We all carry a toxic load. When this load exceeds our ability to store or de-toxify it, then health problems result. According to Steve Meyerowitz, author of the book Juice Fasting and Detoxifi-cation, fasting was used traditionally to improve a wide variety of ailments. No-tice how many effect the organs of de-toxification mentioned above:

Today, few doctors would recommend fasting to treat illness or for health pro-motion. The good news is the majority of people can fast on their own. In my clin-ical experience, patients who are willing to fast and practice other detoxification methods make significant leaps forward in their health. However, pregnant and nursing women should not fast. People with any kind of organ failure, such as type I diabetes, congestive heart or kid-ney failure should not fast without medi-cal supervision. The first time my husband fasted he

experienced fierce hunger pangs on the second day of the fast. Day two is always the most difficult as the body shifts fuel sources. Normally the liver stores excess blood sugar then releases it when the blood sugar level dips. By day two, the liver is running out of glycogen and the hunger can be intense. The body then turns to fatty acids for fuel. This process isn't very efficient, and produces ketone bodies as a by-product. However, ketone bodies are thought to suppress the appe-tite. Once this process is underway, hun-ger disappears and a feeling of clarity and well-being ensues. Proper preparation also makes the first two days easier. Meyerowitz sug-gests a three-day pre-fast diet. Day one consists of cooked veggies, salads, fruits and juices and excludes processed foods, grains, breads, dairy, fish, eggs and oth-er animal foods. Day two consists of raw salads, fruits and juice, and day three, raw fruits and juices only. If your diet is heavy on the excluded foods, it may be helpful to take a few more days to gradu-ally remove them. Fasting gives us a chance to rest, re-pair, restore and even turn back the bio-logical clock, one reason scientists are now interested in caloric restriction, a fancy word for fasting. Caloric re-striction has been shown to increase the life span in primates and rodents by 40 percent or more. Increases in growth hormone and sex hormones have been noted, along with reduced insulin and cortisol levels. It is thought that caloric restriction invokes genetic programming that optimizes metabolism, slows aging and lengthens lifespan.

Co-Creang Community

C ommunity is created in the hearts of every

individual. Each one of us weaves a

unique thread in the communities with

which we interact. We are each given the oppor-

tunity to contribute our gifts, talents and abilities;

and also to explore how what we share harmoniz-

es with the gifts of others. Community offers each

of us the chance to see ourselves in a new light, to

challenge our growth and to strengthen our core

values.

On the heels of the recent tragic shooting at

our local Jewish Community Center and Village

Shalom Retirement Community, we are given the

opportunity to open our hearts to our greater

community with the energy of peace and love.

Such love that we transcend any perceived differ-

ences. Such love that we come together in the

spirit of unity, of one heart, and heal together. As

we are reminded that we live in a world of great

extremes, we are gifted with choice. We get to

choose how we respond, interact and lead.

Folk artist and gifted musician, Ani DiFranco,

said, “I know there is strength in the differences

between us. I know there is comfort where we

overlap.” And, here it is, so simply yet eloquently

said: Our diversity is what makes life vibrant. We

are a mosaic of colors, tones and vibrations. Each

of us is a shining face of the multi-faceted jewel of

community. We are a community that beats with

one heart, whose vibrations explode into a fasci-

nating and interesting melody in which each of us

is a unique expression.

So, this is beautiful, yes, but what do I do?

What do we do? How do we co-create a world that

is for our highest good and the highest good of

all? The answer is love. By sharing the love in our

hearts with those around us and our communi-

ties, we create the loving world that is our true

nature. By acting on love, we co-create the com-

munity of our highest potential.

Explore your local options and show your com-

munity support. There are many groups that meet

on a regular basis to share interests and passions.

Whether you join a walking group at the Overland

Park Arboretum, a Mom’s group at the birth cen-

ter, adopt a pet, visit a local farmer’s market or

attend a spiritual group discussing new and excit-

ing concepts, take a step to interact with others

and contribute the gift of your presence. Venture

out to those community centers, studios and facil-

ities where mind, body and spirit are treasured.

Find people and organizations that overlap.

Check out those places where theatre meets ath-

letics, where yoga meets artwork, where spiritual-

ity meets sound healing, where circles of this

city’s finest share their gifts with community.

The Kansas City spiritual community is a di-

verse web of individuals that are widely connect-

ed. We share spaces, explore nature together, re-

fer services and offer community events. Many of

us have partnered together, blending our gifts in

order to offer our community fresh and exciting

experiences. The key ingredient to these events is

not the planning, timing and scheduling, even

though these things are necessary. The key ingre-

dient is love -- love for self and love for the com-

munity. When we listen to love and let love guide

us, we hear the voice of community; we hear the

voice of one heart. It is not the individuals, but

the one community heart that creates the events

and blesses the spaces and locations where they

are held.

You who are reading this, you are a part of this

community. You are a valued piece of the evolving

heart. Allow yourself to get involved and become

evolved. Start with sharing your presence. Next,

share your thoughts, ideas and gifts. Create a

community group or event. Open your heart to

the one heart. A few more page turns or clicks and

a calendar of events awaits you. You are evolving,

we are evolving, and our community is evolving.

Let love be your guide, and co-create community

now!

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 16 June 2014

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) One of your main life themes is de-veloping a sense of security. This month, focus on meditating on a spiritual vision that connects with the strength of your soul. See your-self as a tree with deep roots that are joined with the source of everything you need. This is available to you at all times. When you are emotionally and spiritually secure, you can enjoy life! Also, your inner resources will effortlessly support others and you won’t feel drained.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Don’t dread June’s Mercury retro-grade. It’s here to help develop your intuition and soul connection. In-crease meditation time – and it needn’t be traditional. Go for walks in nature; take long baths; practice yin yoga or just sit and breathe. Ask for messages in dreams and keep a notebook by your bed. Guidance that comes reveals subconscious issues that keep you from deeper intimacy – and also releases pros-perity blockages!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) If you’re having money arguments with your partner, it’s covering dis-appointment about lack of connec-tion. Commit to spend more time together doing spiritual things – nature walks, art exhibits, meditat-ing together or saying gratitude statements about each other. Your renewed bond will birth amazing

solutions to financial issues. If sin-gle, meditate on loving affirmations to increase self-worth and money solutions will come too!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) You could be edgy this month, so please take extra meditation and quiet time so you don’t cause unnec-essary drama. Also closely examine eating habits. It’s likely that you’re allergic to something that affects your emotional and hormonal bal-ance. Maybe eliminating gluten and sugar is a start? Once your head is clear you’ll make better work and relationship decisions. Have daily stress reduction techniques to keep your spiritual connection going throughout the day.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Mercury is retrograde, bringing op-portunities for deep meditation and reflection! You’ll be able to see pat-terns that make relationships chal-lenging. Be gentle with yourself! Your ego wants to dwell on “flaws” and keep you stuck. Instead, forgive yourself and ask your intuition for solutions – then act on those solu-tions! Bonds will others will improve – and you’ll also feel comfortable in your own skin!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) June heals intimacy issues. Having “space” is crucial to you. You also get bored and need variety more than the average person. Meditate

and have courage to examine your heart for childhood wounds that caused deep disappointment. You’re actually an idealist, but can appear frivolous because of past hurts. For-give those experiences and open your heart to commitment with wor-thy people!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Mercury’s retrograde, potentially causing communication confusion in close relationships. To avoid pit-falls, meditate to reveal the roots of disharmony, and let your loved one know what you want to do to make things smoother on your end. Ask to meditate together to create a level of connection that transcends mere words. If single, you can attract a spiritually-minded person who “gets” the deeper parts of you.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) As an idealist, you’re often disap-pointed with others. You have cour-age to live your truth, while most people don’t. Meditate on this deep pain that makes you feel isolated or betrayed. Mercury retrograde shows how you take your feelings out on your body with bad eating habits, addictive substances, or disrespect-ing your need for rest and serenity. Treat yourself well, forgive other’s their frailties, and you’ll attract emo-tionally stronger people!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Neptune, your own planet, retro-grades this month, forcing you to look at boundary issues. Meditate on your needs and desires. Get clear about who you are and what you want in life and love. Write it all down and ponder action steps. At month’s end, talk to loved ones about changes that must happen. Outline what you need from them, and also how you’ll be changing. Be gentle, but stick to your truth. If sin-gle, you’ll attract people with the karma to love you and respect healthy limits!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) If there’s problems erupting in rela-tionships, dive into your subcon-scious with meditation. You’ll see childhood issues that cause the chal-lenges. You could also see past lives that are being triggered by current stress. Remember today’s “stuff” is pointing at old patterns. Broaden your thoughts to the bigger picture. If angry say, “What is the root of my reaction?” Look beyond symptoms to find and fix the cause!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) This month’s Mercury retrograde really opens your intuition! Seek out friends and activities that support your soul’s growth. You might get a group together who want to medi-tate and explore metaphysics. You likely know a few spiritual folks, but haven’t utilized each other in this way. Also, take care of your body with healthier foods, so your mind and spirit have a good home in which to grow and flourish!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Happy birthday Gemini! Mercury turns retrograde, helping you with issues of self-esteem. Meditate on your value. Focus on positive affirmations about your strengths and spiritual gifts. Finances are also con-nected with esteem, so as you have emotional break-throughs, you’ll also open the floodgates of prosperity! Also, reach out to new friends and try fun new hobbies and activities.
