Wooden Box Had button on top and two

wheels inside at right angles

Wheels took measurementsby rolling one wheel, whiledragging the other at a rightangle

GETTING ITS NAME Engelbart called it the XY

Positioning Indicator

Because it measured the X and Y axisto move the cursor

He thought the public would give it adignified name

A colleague thought it looked like amouse and after that it was referred toas a Mouse.

Not a big success

Very slow

Extremely expensive Xerox Star sold for $16,595

Caused Mouse to be

unsuccessful too BUT, they heavily influenced

Microsoft and Apple

Were too complicated for a mass

production Steel ball held in place by metal

assembly

Required exact alignment with rollersand springs to work

Collected dirt from places it rolled on

= bad performance

Replaced steel ball with
