    DR. DOUGLAS C.

    ENGELBART

Creator of the Mouse Earned Ph.D. at University of

    California

    1957 Researcher at StanfordResearch Institute

Came up with the idea as a

    student Having equipment measure

the area of a two dimensional

    chart

    THECREATION

Before Mouse, the onlyway to move cursor wasby using arrow keys

    1963 Engelbart inventedthe Mouse

    1964 Engelbartscolleague, Bill English,

    built the first prototype

    FIRST WORKING MOUSE

Wooden Box Had button on top and two

    wheels inside at right angles

Wheels took measurementsby rolling one wheel, whiledragging the other at a rightangle

    Calculated the 2-D area

    WORKING MOUSE

Information sent tocomputer and shown onscreen as cursor moving

Cord originally attachedto the back got in the way

    Switched it to the front

GETTING ITS NAME Engelbart called it the XY

    Positioning Indicator

Because it measured the X and Y axisto move the cursor

He thought the public would give it adignified name

A colleague thought it looked like amouse and after that it was referred toas a Mouse.

    EXPERIMENTATION

Same time as Mousedevelopment, other deviceswere being made.

Ex: Knee Switches (top)and Light Pens (bottom)

    EXPERIMENTATION

Engelbart received a grantfrom NASA to test andcompare the devices

Wanted to determine whichdevice could do the task thefastest and most accurate

    Mouse won the experiment

    PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION

    December 1968 Fall JointComputer Conference

    First public demonstration ofmouse

Also demonstrated remote network,shared-screen collaboration, videoconferencing, hypertext, and

    interactive text editing

Known as Mother of All Demos

    Received a standing ovation

    EVOLVING THE MOUSE

Bill English continued thedevelopment of the Mouse

    Replaced wheels with steel

ball This Mouse was first used

    with Xeroxs Alto computerin 1975

XEROX COMPUTERS Only 100 Alto computers sold

    Not a big success

    Very slow

Extremely expensive Xerox Star sold for $16,595

    Caused Mouse to be

unsuccessful too BUT, they heavily influenced

    Microsoft and Apple

    EXPENSIVE TO

    CHEAP(ER)

Xerox Mice were expensive $350 to $400

Were too complicated for a mass

production Steel ball held in place by metal

    assembly

Required exact alignment with rollersand springs to work

Collected dirt from places it rolled on

    = bad performance

CHEAPER(ER) Steve Jobs asked design team to

make a mouse that Apple couldsell for $15

    Replaced steel ball with

floating lead ball in rubber Made a precision injection-

    molded ribcage to hold all

internal mechanics Mouse production became a

    cheap, snap-together process

IMPROVING THE MOUSE Went through a variety of shape

    changes

From box like to more roundedshape

    Needed to accommodate usercomfort

    Improved accuracy by movingball

Originally in the back of mouse

Moved it to the front, closer to

    users fingers

    MOUSE IS COMPLICATED

Early 1980s, public thought it was

    hard to use

Apples computer manuals containedchapters on how to use the mouse

Needed to convince public it waseasy to use

Slogans: If you can point, you can

    use a Macintosh.

Encouraged practicing using a mousebefore dismissing it

MOUSE IS COMPLICATED Microsoft included games to play

specifically to learn how to use themouse

Notepad a mouse based text editor

    Piano an on screen piano
