Aviation Humor?Hot-shot fighter vs. bomber

A young guy in an F-16 fighter was flyingescort for a B-52 and generally being a nui-sance, acting like a hotdog, flying rollsaround the lumbering old bomber. The hot-dog said over the air, "Anything you can do, Ican do better."The veteran bomber pilot answered, "Try thishot-shot."The B-52 continued its flight, straight andlevel.Perplexed, the hotdog asked, "So? What didyou do?""I just shut down two engines, kid."

Design limits.....

A stormy flight aboard a Boeing aircraft; anoff-duty airline stewardess is sitting next to aman in the grip of serious white-knuckle feveras he watches, through his porthole, the air-craft's wing bending and bouncing in thetempest. The stewardess tries to reassurehim; she works in the industry and flies allthe time, she tells him. There is nothing toworry about; the pilots have everything undercontrol."Madam," he replies, "I am a Boeing engi-neer and we did not design this aircraft to dowhat it is doing."

Innovation!

During the heat of the space race in the1960s, the U.S. National Aeronautics andSpace Administration decided it needed aball point pen to write with in the zero gravityconfines of its space capsules. After consid-erable research and development, theAstronaut Pen was developed at a cost ofabout US $1 million. The pen worked andalso enjoyed some modest success as anovelty item back here on earth. The Soviet Union, faced with the same prob-lem, used a pencil.

At Cirrus, our top priority is safety,so we’re always working to makeavailable to our pilots the best toolsto make better, safer, aeronauticaldecisions. When we saw the tangiblebenefits of EVS (Enhanced VisionSystem), we decided to certify andoffer EVS as an option for SR22models sporting the CirrusPerspective by Garmin integratedflight deck. Based on infrared tech-nology pioneered in the military andlaw enforcement, EVS sensors allowpilots to see up to three times furtherthrough some low-visibility condi-tions like mist, rain and the dark ofnight, giving pilots a real-time,unobstructed and hyper-realisticview of the terrain ahead. For pilotsflying precision and non-precisionapproaches into challenging airports,or identifying clouds while flyingVFR at night, EVS advances pilotsituational awareness to levels neverbefore realized in a single-enginepiston aircraft.

2010 SINGAPORE AIRSHOW -

PIPER ANNOUNCES GLOBAL

EXPANSION

SINGAPORE, Feb. 2, 2010 — Despite the cur-rent economic downturn, strategic investmentby the Singapore-based owners of Piper

Aircraft, Inc. has enabled the company to moveforward on many fronts, from the formation of anew company focused on Asia/Pacific initiatives,to accelerated development of its product line andother product programs.

“The Imprimis acquisition was a major milestonefor us – one that is a boon for the company and itsfuture,” said Piper President and CEO Kevin J.Gould. “Over the years, Piper has had many own-ers, but few saw the strategic value of this iconiccompany. Now, with Imprimis and its strategicsense of what Piper can be and how it can grow,we have owners the likes of which we haven’t seensince the days when Bill Piper owned theCompany.”

Imprimis -- a corporate finance and investmentmanagement firm that operates from its offices inSingapore and Brunei Darussalam – acquired Piperlast year with a pledge to take the company to newlevels of performance.

`We are making major commitments to expandingour business and providing top quality aircraft andservice throughout Asia/Pacific, said MaryMessuti, Managing Director, Piper Aircraft Asia.

Piper’s new initiatives in Asia/Pacific were thefocus of the company’s news conference held heretoday at the 2010 Singapore Airshow and constitut-ed yet another example of Piper’s new focus onexpanding operations in Asia/Pacific after the for-mation of Piper Aircraft Asia, Sdn Bhd.

“We have made huge inroads in establishing our-selves in the Asia/Pacific market,” said Messuti,“and our expectation is to continue significantgrowth in the region.”

Messuti pointed to the following major develop-ments:

• The formation of Piper Aircraft Asia, Sdn Bhd,with headquarters in Brunei Darussalam.

• The appointment of Allan Bligh – a major generalaviation aficionado and de-facto publisher ofAOPA’s Australian Pilot – as Vice President ofMarketing for Australia

• Ongoing plans to set up major sales and serviceoperations — in addition to head office in BruneiDarussalam – in the Pacific/Rim and China/adja-cent locations

• Establishment of a flight training academy inBrunei – requests for Proposals (RFP) are out nowwith decisions expected soon.

• Ongoing and new fleet sales in the region –i.e.,see (in media kit) Australian Airline Pilot Academy(AAPA), a wholly owned subsidiary of RegionalExpress Holdings Limited (Rex)

• Debut of the all-new PiperSport here today inAsia/Pacific markets and the Light Sport Aviation(LSA) segment as a world-class aircraft that speaksto Piper’s heritage in bringing seminal, entry-levelairplanes to market while offering features and per-formance normally found in high-end aircraft.

• Establishing Aviall Services, Inc., a whollyowned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, to bePiper’s global parts distributor, providing supplychain support for the company’s global dealer net-work and individual customers.

“Piper is truly committed to expansion of world-class sales and service globally –with particularemphasis on Asia/Pacific,’ said Messuti.“Imprimis bought Piper to expand its existing busi-nesses and investments, and facilitate its expansioninto General Aviation, a strategic sector, in which ithad been looking to invest for some time.”

Asia’s general aviation sales are set to rise beyondits current global share of five per cent and salesof two - to six - seat aircraft should grow steadilyduring the next five years due to growing wealthand sophistication in Asia and increasing demandfor pilot training from training schools and flyingclubs (commercial and private).

In acquiring Piper, Imprimis executives outlinedplans to propel Piper from its current status as acompany with a rich heritage and reputation forinnovation, and expertise in aircraft design, devel-opment and manufacturing, to one that has greaterresources and capabilities to capitalize on opportu-nities in emerging and traditional markets.

Product Development and R&D

Prior to its acquisition by Imprimis, Piper – as has

been the case with many companies – had to scale

back on the scope and timing of its research and

development programs. Now, however, the compa-

ny is back on track with full development of the

PiperJet and other exciting product initiatives.

Among the first actions Piper has taken in imple-

menting its new strategic direction has been

recruitment of new engineering resources to propel

its product initiatives, beginning with the PiperJet.

continued on Page 9

Everything Aircraft Page 9 March 2010

continued from Page 8

“Development of the PiperJet, as well as other newproducts and innovations, is crucial to Piper’s long-term growth strategy,” said Gould, “and Imprimishas earmarked funds to ensure that we move for-ward on these vital programs.”

Proof of that commitment is evident in Piper’s hir-ing of more than 50 engineers as it ramps up prod-uct development programs to ensure optimal tim-ing for first deliveries of the company’s first pure,jet-powered, turbofan design in its 72-year history.

“We are in the process of hiring engineers at alllevels – from senior to entry-level professionals –and across all engineering disciplines, includingstructures, systems, flight test, and manufacturing,”Messuti said. “With our new ownership, the accel-eration of Piper’s product programs is trulyremarkable.”

Piper’s Plans to Expand GloballyIn addition to its product initiatives Piper execu-tives have announced that the company is well onits way to international expansion of dealer basesthroughout Asia, Pacific/Oceania, the Middle East,Europe, Africa, Central America and Caribbeanregions. This expansion is in keeping with thecompany’s new strategic growth plan.

In acquiring Piper, Imprimis cited internationalexpansion as a top priority, particularly in Asia, where general aviation sales are set to rise beyondtheir current global share of five (5) percent. Pipersees significant opportunities there given the com-pany’s model mix and the steady growth analystsare predicting for sales of two-, four- and six-seataircraft over the next five years – the result ofshifting demographics and increasing demand forpilot training from training schools and flyingclubs (commercial and private).

Says Gould: “We have a serious game plan, and anownership group that is committed to our long-term growth and success.”

Ryan SCW-145

T. Claude Ryan, another of the early American aviation pioneers formed a new enterprise called Ryan

Aeronautical Company in 1934, quite separate and apart from his earlier aircraft ventures. This fresh start

inspired revolutionary concepts for all-metal constructed low-wing aircraft. The first of what would be a long

list of achievements, through World War Two and beyond, was the Ryan ST or “Sport Trainer”. This was a low-

wing tandem-seat monoplane of which only five were built before switching production to the Ryan STA in 1935,

that ultimately led to the widely used PT-22 Recruit military trainer.

Beginning in 1936 and pro-

gressing through 1937, exten-

sive efforts were put forward

to develop and produce a luxu-

rious ‘sport cabin’ monoplane

with thick duralumin skin and

fixed undercarriage. The

roomy three-place interior,

under a sliding canopy, was to

have the amenities of plush

leather upholstery, mohair car-

pets, adjustable seats, sound-

proofing, heating and ventila-

tion. Ultimately a 145hp

Warner Super-Scarab 7-cylin-

der Radial, SS165 Series

engine was installed where-

after the aircraft was re-desig-

nated SCW (Sport Coupe

Warner) in October 1937.

Exceeding all design performance expectations the prototype Ryan SCW-145 was put to public acceptance scruti-

ny at aviation gatherings and air meets around the country. Success was immediate. An initial production run for

25 SCW aircraft began in 1938. However, before completion of the run Ryan was inundated with urgent military

orders for the Ryan STM (Sport Trainer Military) model from numerous countries in Latin America and the

Netherlands due to the threat of war in Europe. In due course the United States military also showed a keen inter-

est in the trainer version. As a result only a dozen of the SCW-145 model came off the assembly line for public sale.

An additional example was much later assembled separately from available parts and the prototype was sold to

Mexico.

The sleek little sportster had a climb rate of 900 ft. per min., a top speed of 152 mph. and a service ceiling of 19,400

ft. Gross weight is 2150 lbs. and empty, 1350 lbs. with a wingspan of 37 ft. 6 in.

The New Ryan SCW-145 pictured herewith, and photographed at Concrete WA in July 2009, was built in 1938

American Legend Aircraft CompanyNews Release - The Legend Cub

1st Delivered International Texas Sport Kit CUBCompleted

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, FEBRUARY 2,2010 - American Legend Aircraft Companyannounced today the completion of its first inter-

national customer delivery of a Texas Sport aircraft kit.The kit was delivered to Brazil in early 2009. The newowners took approximately ten months to complete itsconstruction.

The Texas Sport kit is manufactured by AmericanLegend Aircraft Company. The kit, based on the popularLegend Cub design, enables amateur aircraft builders tofabricate their own CUB with any number of featuresand options they desire. Both the Legend Cub and TexasSport are similar to the widely recognized J-3 PiperCub, yet incorporate many modern features. The 1stdelivered international Texas Sport kit was assembledby experienced amateur aircraft builder FLYERIndústria Aeronáutica of Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The Texas Sport gives customers interested in a Cub-type aircraft all the advantages of the classic design, plus a nearly unlimited variety of customization oppor-tunities, all in a newly manufactured aircraft. The kit isbased on the LSA certified Legend Cub and is con-structed at the same factory--two important facts worthrepeating. Both aircraft utilize customized tooling, newly manufactured components, and proven assemblyprocesses. The Texas Sport starts with a fully weldedchromoly airframe sealed for corrosion protection. Itswings are predominantly aluminum, including customextruded aluminum spar and rib frames, exceeding thedurability of the historic wood wings, but matching theoriginal Cub airfoil. Texas Sport kit customers follow adetailed, and illustrated, manual for a major portion ofthe aircraft’s assembly, fulfilling FAA 51-percentrequirements for amateur-built aircraft. Builders of theTexas Sport kit will also exercise their skills and talentswhen performing fabric covering, interior finishes, instrument panel assembly, and engine installation.

Key features that differentiate the Texas Sport from vin-tage Cubs include 1) a design with electric start thatadditionally provides for electrically powered instru-ments, avionics, and lighting options. 2) The TexasSport can be flown solo from either the front or rearseat. It stores fuel it its dual wing tanks. And, 3) theTexas Sport features doors and windows open on bothsides of the aircraft adding to its wider frame and trueopen cockpit feel.

World's Newest Helicopter Debuts at

Singapore Airshow

SINGAPORE (Feb. 2, 2010) - The world's newest

helicopter, the light, twin-engine Bell 429, debuts

today at the Singapore Airshow exhibit of Bell

Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company.

"The 429 represents Bell's commitment to the commer-

cial helicopter market and to invest in delivering aircraft

and services that bring greater value to our customers,"

said Bell President and CEO John L. Garrison.

Certified in mid-2009 by Canadian, U.S. and European

authorities, the 429 is to enter service within weeks with

its first customer, Air Methods Corporation. Air

Methods will operate the aircraft for U.S. emergency

medical service operator Mercy One in Des Moines,

Iowa. Potential customers and attendees of the

Singapore Airshow can see the 429 features that set new

standards for helicopters in its class by the Bell chalet at

location CD11. Bell's stand (Q01 in the main exhibit

hall) also features a full-size mockup of this innovative

helicopter.

The 429's standard-setting features include:

• a design certified to the most up-to-date

requirements of airworthiness authorities

• the only EASA-approved maintenance pro

gram in the helicopter industry and the only

one based on Maintenance Steering Group 3

(MSG-3) practices that are the foundation of

the world airlines' unprecedented reliability,

and

• performance that, when compared to typical

aircraft in its class, provides almost 20 percent

more useful load at altitude on a hot day, more

than 30 percent greater climb rate at maximum

gross weight from sea level on a standard day

and higher demonstrated takeoff and landing

altitudes.

Bell developed many of the 429's design features with

input from customer advisory boards. The result is a

highly flexible cabin space that can be customized to

individual customer requirements, whether as an air

ambulance, offshore oil and gas support aircraft, VIP

transport or other applications.

"In designing this aircraft, we listened to our cus-

tomers," Garrison said. "Their positive response to the

429 is the best indication that it is the game-changing

helicopter they seek."

CIRRUS OWNER’S RELIEFEFFORTS IN HAITI: “Making aDifference, One Cirrus at aTime”Tuesday, 9 February 2010 05:38 by Cirrus

Aircraft

By Lisa Lotane

Thursday, January 21st started out as an

ordinary day filled with meetings, phone

depositions, and case preparations for

attorney and Cirrus Aircraft owner, Troy

Lotane.  After an afternoon appointment can-

celled, he decided to take a break and head

down to his hangar at Melbourne International

Airport.  He needed to check an altimeter set-

ting for the service center at Tampa Executive

where he regularly services his Cirrus GTS

Turbo aircraft.  It is imperative that he keeps

his high performance plane in tip top shape as

he uses it to travel the state of Florida for his

law firm.   On this particular day, as he

approached his hangar he noticed quite a bit

of activity a few hangars down from his.

Seeing his church executive pastor, Jay Austin,

and others loading a twin engine plane with

supplies for Haiti, he made a few inquiries.

Immediately the pilot, Pat Roth, began

explaining to Troy that his mission was to get

critical supplies and personnel into Haiti and

help adopted orphans from Ruuska Village get

transportation to the United States.  Two

organizations, Air Mobile Ministries and Reach

Out to Haiti, have worked together tirelessly

to coordinate this effort.  They have found

smaller planes to work extremely well and

very efficiently, and they have counted on

selfless local pilots to help them in their

efforts.  Pat had convinced Troy that because

he had his IFR certification and his own plane,

he was an ideal candidate to help with this

mission.    Little did Troy know that on

January 27th he would be using his pilot skills,

Cirrus airplane, and trust in God to go to

Haiti.  Having never flown this far over water

before he was a bit anxious. As he talked to

his pilot friends about his concern of only hav-

ing a single engine, the common response was,

“We may have a twin, but you have a Cirrus!”

ABOVE:  Cirrus owner, Troy Lotane with

Barbara Walker

At 5:30 am he met Barbara Walker, who he

knew was a special person from the moment

he heard about her.  She has worked at Ruuska

Village tirelessly for over 20 years to find fam-

ilies and secure visas for Haitian orphans with

very little hope of surviving otherwise.  As des-

peration and panic set in after the horrifying

earthquake on January 12th many visas were

granted and families across the United States

were notified that the children they have

longed to be with for years now finally had a

chance to come.  Barbara and 300 pounds of

supplies were loaded into Troy’s plane.  At

6:00 am they were off to the Turks and Caicos

- where he would refuel before continuing on

to Haiti.  Fuel in the Caribbean is very scarce

due to the disaster relief efforts, and few

islands are able to keep a supply very long.

After refueling they were off to Haiti to make

their 1:15 time slot.

ABOVE: The devastation in Haiti

As Troy approached the airport at Port-Au-

Prince he was overwhelmed by what appeared

to look like a war zone.  It reminded him of a

scene from the M.A.S.H. television show he

grew up watching.  There were tents, stacks

of supplies, medical and relief workers, armed

guards, razor wire, and an abundance of

organized chaos.   He had one hour on the

ground before he was required to leave.  Joe

Hurston, from Air Mobile ministries, and his

Haitian assistant met them at the plane with

two children, Natasha, age 14, and Amanda,

age 2. They seemed relatively calm as they

boarded the plane and prepared for takeoff.

Natasha found great comfort in singing spiritu-

al songs before succumbing to sleep.

Refueling in the Turks and Caicos was again

the plan, but took much longer than anticipat-

ed as the fuel truck broke and needed repair

work.

By the time Troy piloted into Miami

International Airport it was 10:30 pm.  He

couldn’t help but smile as the children had

their faces pressed up against the window

amazed at the light spectacle below. They had

left a world of darkness and terror, and were

being charioted into a brighter world full of

hope and promise.  What a privilege for a will-

ing pilot like Troy, and his extraordinary air-

plane, the Cirrus GTS TURBO, to get to escort

these children to their new life.

RELIABILITY. PERFORMANCE. DEPENDABILITY.PROVEN AGAIN AND AGAIN.

In 1947, the de Havilland Aircraft Company of Canada introduced the DHC-2 Beaveraircraft. They produced approximately 1600 before ceasing production in 1967. Knownby some as the "workhorse of the north", the Beaver has been instrumental in thedevelopment of modern frontiers around the world. It is also the first single-engine utili-ty aircraft to be turbine powered with de Havilland producing over 60 Turbo units beforeproduction ceased.

Viking became the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of de Havilland spare partsfor the DHC-2 Beaver in 1983 when we acquired the original jigs and drawings for theaircraft from de Havilland Canada. We hold the Supplemental Type Approval (STA) /Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for replacing the Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PT6A-20engine with the P&W PT6A-27 engine and have completed certification to increase theTurbo Beaver’s "all-up" weight to 6000 lbs. These and other enhancements make theViking Turbo Beaver a very desirable commercial aircraft.

The AircraftThe Viking Turbo Beaver has more power, better all-around performance, a longercabin and larger payload than the Beaver from which it was developed. It benefits fromover 40 years of continuous worldwide operation. It is the most rugged and reliable air-craft in its category.

In landplane form, our Turbo Beaver operates from un-surfaced ground strips or forestclearings of three hundred metres (1,000 feet) in length. With fuel reserves, operatingunder Visual Flight Rules (VFR), it carries a load of about half a ton on practical stagesfor nearly 1,000 kilometres (about 600 statute miles). With Viking's 6,000 lb upgrade, the Turbo Beaver can haul 2,450 lbs of freight.

A cabin extension, providing for extra windows, a large baggage door and a cargo net,is also available in two different configurations from Viking. The Turbo Beaver can alsobe fitted with floats, amphibious gear or skis. The Viking Turbo Beaver is versatile and may be adapted for agricultural spraying, dusting and seeding as well as in oilfield, mining, and industrial transportation applica-tions.

Designed with maintenance in mind, a number of Turbo Beaver modifications make forquick turnaround and easy maintenance.

Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch designed by Bombardier carries Olympic Flame into Vancouver

February 10, 2010 — Vancouver Corporate

Torch endures extreme winter weather on longest host country relay in Olympic history

After traveling more than 45,000 kilometres across Canada through snow, rain, hail, wind and sub-zero temperatures, theVancouver 2010 Olympic Torch will transport the Olympic Flame to the Host City of Vancouver on February 11, 2010.The 2010 Olympic Torch was designed and manufactured by Montreal-based Bombardier Inc., a Canadian companyfounded in 1942 that stands as the largest supplier of rail equipment, systems and services, and the third largest manufac-turer of civil aircraft in the world. Inspired by the contours of Canada’s winter landscape, the design of the 2010Olympic Torch symbolizes the tracks created in snow and ice by winter sports.

In collaboration with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games(VANOC), Bombardier engineers and industrial designers spent more than two years designing and testing the 2010Olympic Torch. A fuel blend of propane and isobutane allows the torch to burn in colder temperatures than any othertorch in Olympic history. A vent in the side of the torch allows the Olympic Flame to unfurl like a flag.

“Designing and manufacturing the 2010 Olympic Torch has given us an opportunity to apply our ingenuity in aerospaceand rail transportation in a way that has inspired Canadians,” said Pierre Beaudoin, President and CEO of Bombardier.“Our team is very proud to have played an important role in making the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay a suc-cess.”

This week, as the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay nears the end of its successful journey, the engineeringand design team from Bombardier is recalling the harsh Canadian winter weather that put the 2010Olympic Torch to the test.

Prototypes of the torch were tested in a weather simulation chamber before the final design was put tothe test in Canada’s bone-chilling winter. Bombardier manufactured 12,000 torches – one for eachtorchbearer – with final assembly completed by hand in Montreal, Quebec.

After beginning in the mild climate of Victoria, BC, on October 30, 2009, the torch relay came within900 kilometres of the North Pole at Canadian Forces Station Alert in the North-West Territories, andexperienced –38 degrees Celsius in Old Crow, Yukon. Bombardier worked closely with VANOCthroughout the relay to recalibrate the torches to ensure they would withstand extreme winds.

“During the Torch Relay, the weather was at times frigidly cold, but in communities across Canadahearts were warmed by the Olympic Flame and what it represents,” said Jean-Francois Clusiau,Bombardier’s Torch Assembly Manager.

When the torch relay concludes on February 12 at the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010Olympic Winter Games, the torch will have journeyed through 1,037 communities over 106 days in themost eastern, western and northern points of the country. Twelve thousand torchbearers carried theflame by foot and on a variety of modes of transportation, including quintessentially Canadian methodssuch as canoes, skis and snowmobiles.

Bombardier’s Guide to the 2010 Torch, which contains technical data and commentary from the design team, is availableat the following link: www.bombardier.com/files/en/supporting_docs/BI-Bombardier-torch.pdf

B-17 FLYING FORTRESS

As goes the way of legends and fame, so went the Boeing Aircraft Company B-17, four-engine, all metal monoplane bomber – the worlds’ first. Dubbed the fifteen ton “FlyingFortress” by a local news reporter, because of its size and bristling defensive armament, the XB-17 (Model 299) was rolled off the Seattle, WA assembly line and presented to

the public at large, including representatives of the U.S. Army, July 16, 1935. The prototype heavy bomberwas taken aloft a few weeks later, July 28. Although designed and built by Boeing without any governmentfunding or contract, the aircraft was, nonetheless, designed to meet U.S. Army Air Corps specifications of acalled for ‘battleship of the skies’. The XB-17 surpassed all requirements and at the same time set new rangeand speed records. However, the prototype crashed on takeoff in October of the same year, but because themilitary was already suitably impressed with test results, they ordered more aircraft for further evaluation - 14YB-17A’s powered by 1200-hp Wright Cyclone radial engines. The first improved prototype flew inDecember 1936. The remainder were delivered between March 1, and August 5, 1937 to the Army Air Corps2nd Bombardment Group for additional flight and ground tests which evidently proved successful.

The first production orderwas in 1938 for 39 B-17Btypes, further upgraded toinclude the newMoss/General Electricturbochargers thatbecame standard equip-ment on all future B-17’s.The B-17 designation wassimply the 17th bombertype used by the Army AirCorps. Soon after, a sec-ond order was placed, butfor 38 B-17C models, which among otherthings, were armed withseven machine guns

rather than the original five, and had self sealing fuel tanks. These planes arrived for duty in late 1939. A sim-ilar “D” model arrived in strength in 1940. The “C’s and D’s” were the first B-17’s to experience combat inthe Pacific following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

1941 saw the British Royal Air Force receive the first of their offered B-17C’s, which were immediatelyemployed on daylight raids against German targets. These foray’s, however, were not as successful as hopedin an offensive air campaign. The British thereafter concentrated their efforts more successfully on night bomb-ing missions over Germany with their own developed range of heavy bombers. The rest of the eventual 200‘Forts’, E, F, & G versions, received by Britain, apparently were assigned to various roles in Bomber andCoastal Commands until the end of the war, when they were retired from active service.

An extensively modified B-17E was the 1941 version that was to become the standard-bearer design of thedeveloping “Flying Fortress”. 512 E’s were built, being initially deployed to the Pacific Theatre of operations, but later mid-year 1942 most were moved to units of the 8th Air Force in England, where they would becomethe first B-17’s to see action over Europe with American crews.

By the spring of 1942 still another model ‘Fortress’ would appear, designated the B-17F. This flying bat-tlewagon would bear the brunt of the U.S. bombing offensive over Europe in 1943. The legend and the famebegan. Memory capturing news pictures of skies filled with hundreds of high flying, big tailed ‘Fortresses’,spewing contrails on their way to bombing targets in Germany. The “Memphis Belle” and other unending talesof losses and terribly battle damaged “Forts” limping homeward with wounded crews, across enemy occupiedterritory and hostile skies told the truth and brutal reality of war in the air. But one of the more astonishingand moving stories of the air war, was that of a badly beaten up B-17, piloted by 21 year old second lieutenantCharles Brown, carrying major casualties and heading home on but one good engine at about 300 hundred feetabove the ground, after a bombing raid on December 23, 1943. Upon the scene, a German Messerschmitt

Agency issues preliminary safety datafor 2009: one fatal accident overshad-ows good safety record2009 shows lowest number of fatalaccidents for EASA Member State

2009 was the year with the lowest number of fatalaccidents on record for the 31 Member States of theEuropean Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), accord-

ing to preliminary data. However this good safety recordwas overshadowed by the accident of an Airbus A330over the Atlantic. This was the only fatal accident foraeroplanes registered in an EASA Member State in com-mercial air transport*. Despite this, the number of fatali-ties in 2009 (228 fatalities) is significantly above thedecade average. The high number of non-fatal accidents(24) in 2009 indicates that further progress in safety isnecessary. In comparison, the decade 1999-2008 hadevery year on average 27 non-fatal and 5 fatal accidentswith 92 fatalities.

For other world regions the safety record in 2009 hasbeen marred by an accident of an Airbus A310 inComoros and a Tu-154 in Iran. In total there were 41fatal accidents involving aircraft registered outsideEASA Member States. This is below the decade averageof 51 fatal accidents (1999-2008), but not the lowest inthe decade. In these accidents there were 573 fatalities, the second lowest number in the decade.

Preliminary data shows that in 2009, the number of fatalaccidents worldwide in commercial air transport withhelicopters was the second lowest for the decade: onlyin the year 2000 the number of fatal accidents waslower. When looking at the three-year moving average,it appears that for the last five years the average is moreor less constant. The accident numbers for EASAMember States remain small and no further conclusionscan be drawn. Two fatal accidents occurred in Europe in2009. Two people died in Poland when an emergencymedical helicopter crashed. In April, sixteen people diedwhen a helicopter crashed during an offshore flight froman oil platform to Aberdeen, Scotland.

Further information on safety in civil aviation will beincluded in the “Annual Safety Review 2009” due to bepublished by EASA later this year.* Fatal Accidents categorised as such using ICAOAnnex 13 definition. Accidents include aeroplanes orhelicopters with maximum take-off mass above 2 250kgconducting commercial air transport operations (includ-

ing air taxi, ferry/positioning and emergency medicalservices). Aircraft registration was used to assign aircraftinto world regions. All data is preliminary and subjectto review and change as more information becomesavailable.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) was set up bythe EU in 2003 to promote the highest common standards ofsafety and environmental protection in civil aviation. Based inCologne, the Agency currently employs nearly 500 experts andadministrators from all over Europe

Diamond Airborne Sensing getsapprovals for Nose PodConfiguration and Noise & IRReduction Kit

Diamond Airborne Sensing’s Nose PodConfiguration, designed for carrying very largesensors, as well as the in-house developed Noise &IR Reduction Kit that reduces noise and infraredwaves to a significantly low level, received EASAtype certification this January.

Diamond Airborne Sensing (DAS) continues itsroad to success and is very proud to announce thattwo of its latest innovations finally have been certi-fied by the EASA (European Aviation SafetyAgency) for DA42 Multi Purpose Platforms(MPP).

The Diamond MPP’s pod philosophy became oneinnovation richer: The Nose Pod is now availablefor all interested customers, besides the alreadycertified Universal Nose, designed to carry differ-ent EO/IR gimbals up to a weight of 65kg (144lbs)as well as the Belly Pod, able to carry payload upto 80kg (177lbs). With the nose pod configurationit is possible to carry large-format aerial cameras, like the Microsoft UltraCamX, weighing up to85kg (188lbs). Such cameras produce high-qualitylarge-scale orthophotos and are perfectly suited foraerial mapping and photogrammetric projects. With196 megapixels and a collection rate of 2.5 Gbitsper second, the number of flight lines and thereforeall operational costs can be reduced tremendously.

Diamond Airborne Sensing already tested theUltraCamX during a photoflight over a project areaof about 300 km² in only 2 h 45 min and severalother projects. The nose pod is not only availableand certified for the new generation of DA42 MPPs,but also can be purchased for MPPs running withThielert engines. For further improvement, AirborneSensing is already testing to carry the RIEGL air-borne laser scanner LMS Q-680 together with amedium-format airborne digital camera system (IGIH/39) in its Nose Pod.

The revolutionary Noise & IR Reduction Kit, devel-oped by Diamond Airborne Sensing’s R&D depart-ment, which is already installed and tested on thenew GUARDIAN, also received its certification andcan now be offered for all DA42 MPP NewGeneration aircraft. With this special featureAirborne Sensing succeeded in lowering down noiseto a level below average ambient noise (not notice-able above 1.000 ft at loiter speed) as well as reduc-ing the IR signature below a significant level ofrecognition above 8.000 ft (invisible for IR seekerheads). Especially in the law enforcement sector, thison-top exhaust system convinced our customers andis recommended to everyone who is looking for aperfect surveillance & reconnaissance aircraft. TheDA42 MPP NG (equipped with the noise reductionkit) is the first survey aircraft that is verifiably oper-ating under a noise threshold of 60dB at 500ft AGL– that makes it an ideal choice for geodesy projects.

The fact that the MPP is operating below an averagecity noise level increases fields of operationstremendously as standard geodesy flights are operat-ed at 3,000ft AGL.

equipments, please contact Diamond Airborne

Sensing’s sales department (airbornesensing@dia-

AIRCRAFT 1-10 RATING SCALE - EXTERIOR & INTERIORAIRCRAFT EXTERIOR

10/10 Aircraft is new.

9/10 Paint is new. Airframe and paint are in excellent condi-tion with no scratches or dents.

8/10 Paint and airframe are in near new condition. Minorscratches (shallow, short and less than 1 or 2 per square foot)are detectable only on close inspection (inspecting aircraftwhile standing at less than an arms' length from it). Paint onoften-used fasteners and screws may be chipped.

7/10 Paint has high gloss. Small number (less than 3 or 4 persquare foot) of scratches are apparent, mostly on leading edgesdue to abrasion. Close inspection reveals only a few small dentsor chips (less than 1 or 2 per square foot). Windows are clearwith no crazing or discoloring.

6/10 Paint is shiny. Several small scratches, chips or dents (4to 6 per square foot) can be found, mostly around high useareas (fuel caps, doors, struts). Some crazing or small stresscracks (less than 2 or 3 hairline cracks per square foot) are visi-ble in plastic and fiberglass structures. Several windows may bemilky at edges.

5/10 Paint is sound (no corrosion apparent). Slight oxidationcan easily be polished out, leaving paint shiny again. Two orthree small areas (rounded corner of cowling, part of leadingedge) of crazing can be found in paint. Paint on leading edgesis rough from abrasion. Touched up or repaired areas may beseen on close inspection. Small number (3 or 4 per square foot)of short cracks can be found in fiberglass wingtips and cowl-ings due to normal wear or hangar rash. Cowling seals arefaded. Many (less than half) windows have milky edges. Severalwindows may be crazed or lightly scratched. Aircraft looksattractive to most people during walk-around.

4/10 Paint is generally sound. Small areas require specialattention (touch up or repair by trained individual) due to oxi-dation, peeling, chipping, corrosion or crazing. Paint is dull inmany (less than half) areas. Most windows are crazed andscratched.

3/10 Paint is not shiny and has peeled in many areas. Mostleading edges and upper surfaces are crazed and oxidized.Moderate number (5 or 6 per square foot) of chips, cracks ordents can be found. All window surfaces are scratched. Evenafter touch-up and polishing, aircraft still looks unsightly.

2/10 Aircraft looks terrible. Paint is badly oxidized, peeledand blemished. It is well beyond the touch-up and polish stage.Corrosion, dents and cracks require extensive work.

1/10 Exterior is so full of corrosion, heavy dents or tears thatit will not pass an annual inspection without repairs.

AIRCRAFT INTERIOR

10/10 Aircraft is new.

9/10 Interior is new. There are no scratches, cracks, crazingor other evidence of use.

8/10 Interior is in near new condition. Any smell, dirt ormatting can be removed by simple cleaning. Some evidence ofuse can be found only on close inspection.

7/10 A small amount of wear is apparent. Small, shallowscratches and/or stains (1 or 2 per seat) can be found on seats, carpet or woodwork. Stain remover and shampoo removesalmost all stains. Headliner is clean with no stains. There areno nicks in woodwork.

6/10 Headliner may have a couple of dirty spots that can beremoved almost completely with cleaning. Matting in high useareas does not vacuum out completely. Steaming or shampoo-ing improves interior considerably, but a couple of small, limit-ed areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) remain lookingworn or stained. No frayed or torn fabric is apparent. Leather, vinyl or woodwork has no cracks, but small scratches or creases(4 to 6 per seat) are obvious. Seats and drawers operatesmoothly. Scratches in scuff plates around doorways are obvi-ous. Interior still looks attractive when cleaned thoroughly.

5/10 High use areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) stilllook worn (fibers appear shorter than surrounding carpet) afterthorough shampooing. Headliner may have several stains but isnot torn. Minor (2 or 3 instances per seat) fraying, staining orcracking is apparent on less than half of the seats. Small nicksare visible in woodwork. About one-third of the seats anddrawers do not operate smoothly. Interior can be made to lookclean, but it lacks sparkle in many areas.

4/10 Scratches, stains and frayed fabric are seen on mostseats. More than half of the leather or vinyl seats may havesmall cracks. Carpet is matted along aisle. Carpet also hasnumerous stains, snags or other irregularities. Interior has twoor three tears. About half of the seats and drawers do notoperate smoothly. Wood laminates may be peeling slightly.Several cracks in scuff plates around doorways are obvious.Interior cannot be made to look clean or smell fresh.

3/10 Tears, snags and stains are clearly visible in many areas.Several cigarette burns can be found. Most seats and drawersdo not operate smoothly. Interior looks and smells dirty evenafter cleaning.

2/10 Cracks, stains, tears and snags are the norm. Manyseats have exposed foam. Interior is dirty and foul-smellingeven after thorough cleaning.

1/10 Interior is so dirty and worn that most people would behesitant about sitting down for fear of damaging clothing.

Diamond Airborne Sensing takesover the first GUARDIAN

On November 9th, 2009, the first fully certified newgeneration of DA42M – named GUARDIAN – wentinto operations at Diamond Airborne Sensing

The GUARDIAN is a further major milestone in the

history of Airborne Sensing. The new DA42MPP

(Multi Purpose Platform) is perfectly suited for sur-

veillance and reconnaissance missions as well as all

kind of search and rescue operations.

A standard installed new Austro Engine (a

Diamond’s subsidiary) diesel engine, AE300, and a

fully integrated Garmin GFC700 autopilot are the

main differences of the new generation MPPs to the

previous version. The Austro Engine’s manufactured

170hp diesel engine has its unique features with the

EECU controlled actuator, a conventional constant

speed propeller governor, a high mounted tur-

bocharger, a torsional vibration absorber and a heavy

duty reduction gearbox. The main benefit of the

GFC700 is the complete integration in the G1000

glass cockpit which reduces pilot’s workload dra-

matically - essential when the aircraft is operated in

difficult environmental conditions. Flight director,

yaw damper and flight level change modus set a new

standard in air safety.

The universal nose, designed to carry different

EO/IR gimbals up to a weight of 65kg (144lbs) as

well as the belly pod, able to carry payload up to

80kg (177lbs), are already certified for the

GUARDIAN. Especially for military purposes the

GUARDIAN can be provided with a passive surveil-

lance painting and the revolutionary Diamond

Airborne Sensing on-top IR & Noise Reduction Kit.

These special features reduce the aircraft heat and

noise signature down to a level that is less noisy

than a passing car and are therefore very popular

with our customers.

For further improvement, Diamond Airborne

Sensing’s R&D department is working on a facility

to equip the GUARDIAN with a synthetic aperture

radar (SAR) option for maritime purposes. Diamond

Airborne Sensing is using the GUARDIAN for law

enforcement live demonstrations and as a show

model at aviation fairs. The new platform is also

used for commissioned flight operations.

Aurora Flight Sciences, headquartered in Manassas,

VA USA, has placed a fleet sales order for several

fully equipped DA42 New Generation “Guardians”

to support a new business initiative for Intelligence

Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) “power-by-

the-hour” flight services in support of military cus-

tomers and civil/commercial mapping services the

USA. Furthermore the sales department is finalizing

fleet sales with interested parties from the United

Kingdom.

109G on the hunt for it’s third B-17 kill of the day,and perhaps the “Knights Cross” for Luftwaffe flyingace, 27 year old first lieutenant Franz Stigler. With nogun action from the bomber and after eyeballing thesituation, Stigler just couldn’t bring himself to putaway the helpless B-17. Instead, to his possible peril,Stigler it is said, hand-signaled Brown and led the bat-tered “Fort” and its desperate crew outward towardthe sea and home to England before his breaking offfor return to base. 50 years later the two older war-riors, Brown and Stigler, met for the first time andbecame fast friends, which they would remain.

The final model and largest production of the “FlyingFortress” was the B-17G, greatly improved with newfeatures drawn from extensive combat experiences. The first B-17G’s arrived in England for daylightbombing duties over Europe in mid 1943. A total of12,731 B-17’s were built by Boeing, Lockheed andDouglas aircraft companies of which roughly halfwere destroyed in combat or operational accidents.Although the early models of the B-17 left much to beimproved upon in terms of being an actual flyingfortress, the F & G series with their nose to tailmachine guns, armor, bomb tonnage and ruggedpower, finally did live up to the image and name pluseven seemed to epitomize the fighting spirit of the‘Mighty 8th Air Force’. “Good to look at and good tofly” were apparent common words from pilots whotrusted the “Flying Fortress” to get ‘em there and get‘em home.

A B-17G could carry a bomb load of 6,000 to 8,000pounds, had armament of 13 x .50 caliber machineguns, a crew of 10, range 3,750 miles, ceiling altitude36,400 feet with a cruising speed of 160 mph underpower of four Studebaker built Wright R-1820-97Cyclone engines, providing 1200-hp at takeoff.

The B-17 pictured in this feature, with ‘LittleFriends,’ is a 1944 “G” model, s/n 4485314, ownedby the Commemorative Air Force and based at FalconField, Mesa, Arizona. Called “Sentimental Journey”and sporting Betty Grable Nose Art this “FlyingFortress”, N9323Z, flys airhows around the UnitedStates under the markings of the Eighth Air Force,457th Bomb Group.

According to various sources, the latest count of sur-viving B-17’s is 45, of which 15 are airworthy, most-ly in the United States. The rest are preserved orstored pending restoration.

Bombardier Aerospace Delivers302 Aircraft in Fiscal Year 2009/10

February 5, 2010 — Montréal Aerospace

Business aircraft: 176 deliveries; 85 negative net ordersCommercial aircraft: 121 deliveries; 88 net ordersAmphibious aircraft: 5 deliveries; 8 net orders

Bombardier Aerospace announced today that it delivered302 aircraft for the fiscal year ending January 31, 2010,compared to 349 aircraft deliveries in the previous fiscalyear 2008/09 (year ending January 31, 2009). It received11 aircraft orders, net of cancellations, compared to 367orders, net of cancellations, for the previous fiscal year. With the aviation industry continuing to struggle in thecurrent difficult economic environment, BombardierAerospace’s performance was solid.

“The global economic crisis which began in 2008 contin-ued to impact the civil aviation industry throughout 2009as conditions remained challenging,” said Guy C. Hachey,President and Chief Operating Officer, BombardierAerospace. “While indicators of market stabilization havestarted to emerge, we remain cautious as economic uncer-tainty still prevails. We have taken significant steps tostrengthen our operations and continue to invest signifi-cantly in future programs. We strongly believe thatthrough flawless execution and by creating a loyal cus-tomer base for our products and services, we will emergefrom this crisis a stronger and more efficient company,” headded.

Business Aircraft In fiscal year 2009/10, Bombardier delivered 176 businessjets, compared to 235 for the same period last fiscal year,in line with the 25 per cent decrease in business aircraftdelivery guidance provided in 2009.Business aircraft deliveries for the current fiscal year2010/11 are expected to be approximately 15 per cent lessthan fiscal year 2009/10.

Commercial Aircraft In fiscal year 2009/10, Bombardier delivered 121 commer-cial aircraft, compared to 110 for the previous fiscal year. This is in line with the 10 per cent increase in commercialaircraft delivery guidance provided last year.Bombardier expects that most of the deliveries of its com-mercial aircraft will take place in the last three quarters ofthe current fiscal year 2010/11 as a result of the productionrate reductions announced in 2009 and the delay in thecertification and entry into service of the CRJ1000 aircraftto the second half of fiscal year 2011. Compared to theprevious fiscal year, the Corporation expects to deliverapproximately 20 per cent fewer commercial aircraft infiscal year 2010/11.

Note: All fiscal year 2009/10 delivery and order numbersare unaudited.
