Dear Friends,

In 2018, Altenheim Senior Living culminated its 125th anniversary with the Flourish event and Community Open House. Flourish was a huge success with over 260 guests enjoying music by Strongsville City Jazz, superb catering by Strongsville’s own Taste of Excellence and tours of our two newly opened residencies, Altenheim Therapy Rehab Center and Shurmer Place Memory Assisted Living. The Community Open House was attended by over 800. Attendees were treated to an ESPN live broadcast, burgers and beer from The Brew Kettle, and an appearance by the Cleveland Cavs’ own Austin Carr.

Over $130,000 was raised for The Altenheim Foundation, which serves as the fund-raising arm of Altenheim. We are thereby able to continue to provide services and programs that help all our residents be their best. We are sincerely grateful and humbled to have this phenomenal support from our donors, community residents and businesses.

The future is bright for Altenheim, but the challenges continue to be funding and the ever growing population of individuals needing care. We need your help! Gifts to The Altenheim Foundation will make it possible to continue our mission. There are several ways to give, including making a planned gift, becoming a member of The Altenheim Foundation or the 1892 Legacy Society, or by volunteering. Check out www.altenheim.com/waystogive for additional information.

The 2018 Annual Report is a reflection of Altenheim’s history, the rich stories of our residents and staff, and how their amazing lives are now part of Altenheim’s story. Everyone has a story . . .this is ours!!Sincerely,

Comfort and Contentment

Russell and Helen Horne enjoy a quiet, settled life together in the skilled nursing community of Altenheim Senior Living. Helen moved here in 2015, and Russell joined her in 2018. They enjoy being together, whether relaxing and reading, eating lunch in the dining room, or working on jigsaw puzzles together every day. They need extra help these days, but they are content and comfortable.

Some of the most beautiful chapters in our lives won’t have a title until much later. Author unknown

They are also happy to tell you of the rich and full life they’ve enjoyed for almost 58 years. Russell, a radio operator in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, met Helen after leaving the service. He was introduced to her by a friend. “She made my heart do a flip when she walked in the door,” he said. He and Helen loved the polka and spent many happy hours dancing.

Helen worked until her first son was born, then managed the household, the children and, eventually, the care of her mother. Russell worked in manufacturing and production, retiring from Van Dorn Company in 1999. They raised two sons, and they enjoy visits from their five grandchildren. Each family member is proudly displayed on their portrait wall in their room, along with Russell’s very favorite photo of his bride on their wedding day. “We’ve had a great time together,” says Russell. Now they can relax and continue their companionship in a place that helps them live life fully.

Leonard Lane’s days are full. Living at Shurmer Place Assisted Living allows him to pursue activities he enjoys despite the effects of a stroke he experienced in 2011. “The staff and people here are extremely friendly, and I have the support I need,” he says, “I won’t need to relocate if I should need more help.”

Leonard had a rich and full history before circumstances brought him here. He graduated from Ohio University and served in the ROTC, then served in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations handling top-secret projects. He and his first wife raised six children. Then he remarried and enjoyed another long marriage. He also had the joy of singing with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, the Singer’s Club Chorus, the Center Stage Singers, and at the Indians Stadium with the United Church of Christ Choir.

These days, Leonard is up early every morning. At breakfast he checks the Shurmer Place calendar of events for the day. He plays Pokino or “Boot Camp for the Brain” word games and may take a walk or sit outside. Leonard also serves on the Resident Council and is currently Council President. He leads the group in developing outings and resident activities. He is making the most of what Shurmer Place Assisted Living has to offer.

The career history of Scott Soinger is inextricably linked to Altenheim Senior Living. At age 18, he applied for a job as a nurse’s aide while his friend applied at the same time for an opening in housekeeping. After just one day, Scott realized that he was more interested in his friend’s job, so he convinced his friend to switch positions. It was the beginning of a highly successful 36-year career.

Everyone has a story. What you do with it is up to you. Some repeat it, some learn from it. The really special ones use it to

help others.John Mark Green

Scott is Altenheim’s Director of Facilities, with full responsibility for all aspects of daily operations, safety, maintenance, laundry and housekeeping on the Altenheim campus. He has gained a deep and detailed knowledge of these functions and all their related requirements as he advanced from his initial job into leadership roles such as Maintenance Supervisor and

Environmental Services Director. “I enjoy all the aspects of my job, from interacting with residents, to hiring and managing great staff, to participating in major renovations and construction projects.” says Scott.

Scott has 20 staff members, many of whom have been with Altenheim 10-15 years or more. When asked to explain this loyalty, he answers, “I think it’s because we all share a strong work ethic. They know that I would not ask any of them to do anything I wouldn’t do myself. Also, these are special people – they understand that interacting with our residents is a core part of their job and they have the compassion to do that well.”

Residents can rest easy with Scott at the helm.

It took Leilani (Lani) Nunes years to reach America. Born in Manila, Philippines, she and her family dreamed of emigrating to the United States, but many obstacles blocked this path. Finally, in 2016 Lani and her husband Raf were cleared to leave.

Lani and Raf arrived in Cleveland and got jobs at Cintas. Lani soon realized it was the wrong job for her because she loved and needed to work with people. She began part-time work at Shurmer Place on the weekends and loved her work so much that a year later, she happily quit her Cintas job to take a full-time position as a dietary aide at Shurmer Place. Her happiness at Altenheim encouraged Raf to apply as well.

Tell the story of the mountain you climbed. Your words could become a page in someone else’s survival guide.

Morgan Harper Nichols

“I love what I’m doing,” says Lani. “For me this is a ministry. Seniors matter, and they remind me of my own elders. I want our residents to feel that they are special, so I learn as much as possible about their food preferences so I can present food to them that will encourage them to eat better. I also sing songs from their youth when I serve their food, and joke with them to make them smile.” Her loving and cheerful ways have made Lani so popular with the residents that she was recognized by the Resident Council as Employee of the Month early on. Recently, she was nominated for the Good to The Core Award, for treating the residents like family. “The nomination motivates me to continue doing my absolute best for our residents,” she says.

Beginning with Altenheim first residents in 1892, Altenheim has provided outstanding care to those who have entered our doors. As Seniors’ needs changed and expanded over time, Altenheim met these changes through expanded services including assisted living, short-term rehab, memory assisted living, home health and out-patient services. Our Story . . . . .

1876 Starting in 1876, The German Women’s Society was founded and began doing charitable work for the community.

By 1891, the society incorporated as the West Side Deutscher Frauen Verein, purchased land on Detroit Avenue in Cleveland, raised enough money to begin constructing a safe haven for the elderly who had very little resources.

Opening Minds through ArtThis intergenerational artmaking program, designed for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias, acknowledges each participant as a vital creative individual. Through a grant from the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University, Altenheim conducted art making sessions, with high school and college age volunteers guiding the artmaking process, but leaving aesthetic decisions to the resident. The sessions culminated in an Art Show and Auction, held on December 9, 2018.

Volunteer Recognition DinnerVolunteers have been a part of Altenheim long before opening its doors in 1892. The first volunteers were the Women’s Auxiliary. Today, volunteers play a vital role in providing companionship, activities and religious services to the residents. The Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner is our way of saying Thank you for being part of our story for 125 years!!
