How to make it up1 Laminate all the sheets of objects for Stages 1 and 2
2 They can now be cut along the guide lines on each sheet.
3 For Stage 1 there are 80 cards and for Stage 2 thereare 80 cards 160 in total.

Everyday Objects in School – Matching PairsTeaching Notes
This game is for pupils new to English to familiarise them with some of thelanguage that they will need to use in school. This Matching Pairs game willteach pupils how to match the sameobjects according to the same colour.
It is recommended that the children havethe opportunity to match the cards fromeach stage before this game is played. This could be an independent activity.
There are 40 sheets of A4 with 4 pictures on each sheet. 160 pictures in total.Therefore we suggest that the vocabularyof the objects is taught in stages.

How to play the gameTeacher/teaching assistant with 2 – 4 children.Please include children with good command of Englishwho can act as good language models.l Teacher/teaching assistant chooses which stage
cards to use.l You now need to choose two colours eg red
and blue. Use these cards only. You will always have40 cards using 2 colours in any stage in anycombination.
l The cards are used like flash cards to reinforce thevocabulary eg It’s a red pencilIt’s a blue pencil
l Put the cards face down on the carpet or on the table.
l The teacher/teaching assistant can decide whichchild should start first…
l The child taking the first turn is asked to choose twocards and turn them over.
l The teacher/teacher assistant asks:Do they match? Is it a pair?
l If the child response is No then the teacher/teaching assistant should reply:Put them back where you found them.Now it’s…(name of child)’s turn.
l If the child response is YesTeacher/teaching assistant repliesWhat have you got?The child should be encouraged to say eg I’ve got a pair of red rulers/I have two red rulers.
l The pair are put on the table face up next to the child.
l The child with the matching pair can then haveanother turn.
l The winner is the child that has the most pairs atthe end of the game when all the cards have beenpicked up.
Follow up activitiesl How many of these objects can the children find in
their class room?
l What colours are they?
l Ask other children in the class if they have any ofthe objects eg lunch boxes, coats, PE bags, pencilcases, pencil sharpeners… You could use theinformation and make a simple graph choosing oneobject using colour as one axis and number as theother axis.
l Make individual books:My coat is…My rubber is…My pencil case is… etcAdding the colour and a picture.
