OUR BOYS IN

Information is based on provisional squads. It was correct at the time going to press, but subject to change. The final squads of 23 men who will carry the hopes of their nations in the 2010 Fifa World Cup will be announced in due course.

Aaron Mokoena The Bafana captain was born on 25 November 1980 in Johannesburg and is nicknamed Mbazo or The Axe because of his tough tackling. He is the youngest ever player to have represented South Africa, having played in 1999 for the 2000 Summer Olympics qualifiers. He has made a worthy replacement for Lucas Radebe as captain of the country’s team. He played his final game for Blackburn Rovers on May 24, 2008 and on the same day announced he would join Portsmouth, England, on a three-year contract.

Itumeleng Khune Also known as Spider Kid, he was born on 20 June 1987 and hails from Tshing near Ventersdorp in the North West and grew up in a family of six in which his father, a mineworker, was the sole breadwinner. Unlike many South African players who cite kicking a soccer ball on their home town’s dusty streets as their starting point, Khune was in love with cricket, idolising Nicky Boje. The Kaizer Chiefs top player is one of the biggest goalkeeping talents South African football has produced in recent times. A fine shot-stopper, he is excellent at starting quick attacks with his distribution. His younger brother, striker Lucky Khune, also plays for Kaizer Chiefs. Itumeleng is looking for a move to Europe after the World Cup.

Head coachCarlos Alberto Gomes Parreira He was born on 27 February 1943 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Parreira has coached national squads in 21 games in the Fifa World Cup. The Brazilian is noted for having been one of only two coaches who has led four national teams to the World Cup: Kuwait in 1982, United Arab Emirates in 1990, Brazil in 1994 and 2006, and Saudi Arabia in 1998. He will be assisted by South African, Pitso John Mosimane, and Brazilian Jairo Leal.

Bongani Khumalo He had a fantastic season with SuperSport United. He was born in Manzini, Swaziland and moved to South Africa with his parents when he was two years old.Tshepo Masilela Plays for Maccabi Haifa in Israel and signed a four year contract with the club in August 2007. Played a crucial part in Maccabi Haifa’s victory in the Israeli Championship.Innocent Mdledle Moved to Mamelodi Sundowns from Orlando Pirates last year. The left-back was born in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.Bryce Moon The former Ajax Cape Town man is now with PAOK in Greece,

Bafana Bafana (The Boys) All eyes will be on England-based South African star Steven Pienaar when he dons the green and gold and joins hosts Bafana Bafana from June 11. He plays for Everton in England. Ranked 90th in the world, Bafana will be playing in their third World Cup. The hosts are coached by Carlos Alberto Parreira and captained by Aaron Mokoena of English Premier League’s Portsmouth. Their earliest documented football match in South Africa was held in Cape Town, although Pietermaritzburg also claims to be the cradle of the game in this country. Football was brought to South Africa in the same way it was spread elsewhere in the world, through the British military and through travellers from the colonial power. The sport spread widely in South Africa with the infl ux of Britons to fi ght in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the fi rst Anglo-Boer War of 1880 to 1881.

Player to watch: Steven PienaarSteven Jerome Pienaar was born on 17 March 1982 in Johannesburg. He can play on the right or left wing and is also a member of the South African national team. Pienaar has played for Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam and German side Borussia Dortmund.Pienaar was sued by his ex-girlfriend, Danielle Steeneveld, for R10.8 million for not marrying her. The mother of Pienaar’s daughter, Skyla, claims that Pienaar broke a promise to wed and ended their two-year relationship “without just cause” and took away her contraception so she would become pregnant. Her reputation was tarnished as she is an unmarried mother.

El TriKitted out in red, green and white, El Tri are ranked 17th making them tough competitors. Coached by Javier Aguirre and captained by Rafael Marquez, this Central American team is ready for its fi fth World Cup appearance. Hot players to note are Jonathan dos Santos of Barcelona and young Arsenal striker Carlos Vela. The Mexican Football Federation was founded on 27 November 1927. The fi rst president of the federation was former football player Humberto Garza Ramos. The federation affi liated to Fifa in 1929 and then to the Concacaf in 1961. The Mexican Football Federation professionalised football in 1943 with the creation of the fi rst division, and the second division became the Primera ‘A’ in 1994. The federation supervises more than 4 200 games a year and is also in charge of assigning more than 600 referees for professional matches.

Player to watch: Carlos VelaCarlos Alberto Vela Garrido was born on 1 March 1989 in Cancún, Quintana Roo. He is a striker for Arsenal in the English Premier League.

Les Bleus (The Blues)Ranked seventh, the striking boys in red and blue are aff ectionately known as Les Bleus (The Blues). This World Cup will be the 1998 champions’ 13th appearance. Coach Raymond Domenech and skipper and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry, with the likes of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema in the line-up, are hoping to clinch the title again. France made their entry into the international fi eld of football in 1903. France’s football team off ers a high level of competition in matches - but believe it or not the team used to be very modest, one that some would consider easy game. Their fi rst international match was versus Belgium, and was a tied game. In 1930, France’s national team was one of the four teams from Europe that participated in the inaugural World Cup. In the mid 1950s, France did see some mild success, for once not being at the bottom of the standings.

Thierry Daniel Henry, born on 17 August 1977, plays for Spanish La Liga club Barcelona, predominantly as a striker. Henry was born in Les Ulis, Essonne in Paris where he played for

an array of local sides as a youngster and showed great promise as a goalscorer. He was spotted by AS Monaco in 1990

and signed instantly, making his professional debut in 1994. Good form led to an international call-up in 1998, after which he signed for the Serie A defending champions

Juventus. He had a disappointing season playing on the wing, before joining Arsenal in England in 1999, where he made his name

as a world-class footballer.

La Celeste (The Sky Blue)Appearing in the World Cup for the 11th time are Uruguay, nicknamed La Celeste (The Sky Blue) and clad in blue and white. The team are ranked 19th in the world. Heart-throb Diego Forlan is the man to watch in the Oscar Washington Tabarez-coached side, captained by another hottie Diego Lugano. In 1928 the Games of the IX Olympiad, the fi rst Summer Olympic Games, were hosted by The Netherlands. Uruguay’s football team went to the specially-built Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam to defend their status as Olympic champions, having beaten Switzerland in Paris in 1924. The Netherlands was the fi rst to be beaten by Uruguay’s formidable side. Germany and Italy fell in the quarter-fi nals and semi-fi nals respectively, leading to a

gold medal fi nal between Uruguay and their neighbours and rivals Argentina. As a result of the Olympic success, Uruguay was selected to host the fi rst ever Fifa World Cup. And won that too!

For fun, we’ve given a player from each team a ‘ball rating’. This, we’re quick to point out, has absolutely nothing to do with

how hot they are on the field ... it’s how they sizzle in the looks department that counts. So the hotties get five balls ... some

La Albiceleste (The White and Sky Blue)La Albiceleste (The White and Sky Blue), ranked seventh in the world by Fifa and second in South America, make their 14th appearance in the Fifa World Cup. Look out for Barcelona star Lionel Messi in the team’s blue and white, coached by the legendary Diego Maradona and captained by Javier Mascherano of English Premier League side Liverpool. In the 1986 World

Cup in Mexico, Argentina topped Group A by beating South Korea 3-1, drawing 1-1 with Italy and beating Bulgaria 2-0.

After beating Uruguay 1-0 they faced England in the quarter-fi nal. The game

is famous for two Diego Maradona incidents; the infamous Hand of

God and his second goal, still considered the greatest in World

Cup history (El Diego picked up the ball in his own half, and dribbled

past half the England team before sidestepping Peter Shilton in goal).

Player to watch: Lionel MessiHe was born on 24 June 1987 and is considered one of the best football players of his generation, having received several Ballon d’Or and Fifa World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21. His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to football legend Diego Maradona, who has declared Messi his successor. In January 2009 Messi proclaimed, ‘I have a girlfriend and she’s living in Argentina.’ He was later seen with the girl, Antonella Roccuzzo, at a carnival in Sitges after the Barcelona-Espanyol derby. Roccuzzo is a fellow native of Rosario and the two plan to wed at the end of this year.

GreeceThe Pirate ShipWhen the Greek team land in South Africa in June, it will be their second appearance in the Fifa World Cup. Ranked 12th in the world and 10th in Europe, The Pirate Ship, as the Greeks are aff ectionately known, is coached by Otto Rehhagel and captained by Georgios Karagounis of Panathinaikos, one of the top sides in Greece. The boys in white and blue have become a formidable side, having won the Euro in 2004. The Greeks attract large numbers of fans at home matches and abroad. For instance, a friendly clash between

South KoreaThe Taeguk Jeonsa (Taeguk Warriors)The Koreans are ranked 47th in the world and third in Asia and will be playing in the greatest sporting event in the world for the 8th time. Coached by Hug Jung-Moo and captained by Park Ji-Sung of Manchester United, England, expect the Taeguk Warriors in red and blue to put up a brave fi ght on South African soil. Korea’s most notable result in international play came in the 1966 World Cup at Ayresome Park, England when the team upset Italy 1-0 to gain a spot in the quarter-fi nals. There they lost 5-3 to Portugal despite a 3-0 lead.

Player to watch: Park Ji-Sung

Ji-Sung began his football career in his native South Korea and played for the Myongji University team before joining

Kyoto Purple Sanga in Japan. After Ji-Sung’s national team manager Guus Hiddink moved back to The Netherlands to manage PSV Eindhoven, Ji-Sung followed him to the Dutch side a year later. After PSV reached the semi-fi nals of the 2004/5 UEFA Champions League, Ji-Sung’s talents were recognised by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and he signed the Korean. Ji-Sung is able to play anywhere across the midfi eld and is noted for his exceptional fi tness level. The South Korean star was asked on television whether he had a wife and he replied, ‘I don’t have the time for marriage yet because I’m too busy with Manchester United.’

He might be a great player, but a more stylish haircut would work wonders on the looks side of things.

Only two and a half balls for John we’re afraid. Although he does have rather nice legs, come to think of it!

The Super EaglesThe 1980 and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winners will be making their fourth appearance in the World Cup. Coach Lars Edvin “Lasse” Lagerbäck will call the shots from the bench for the team in white and green. After competing against other colonies in unoffi cial matches since the 1930s, Nigeria played its fi rst offi cial game in October 1949, while still a British colony. The team played warm-up games in England against various amateur teams like Dulwich Hamlet, Bishop Auckland and South Liverpool.

Player to watch: John Obi MikelHe was born John Michael Nchekwube Obinna on 22 April 1987 and is the son of a former civil servant. In the summer of 2005, Mikel played for Nigeria at the Fifa U20 World Youth Championships in The Netherlands and was named the tournament’s second best player.A few days after Mikel turned 18, Manchester United announced it had struck a deal with Lyn Oslo to sign the player. Chelsea later issued a counter-claim suggesting it already had an agreement with Mikel and his agents. Rather than leaving Fifa to determine the validity of the contract signed with

Manchester United, Chelsea volunteered to settle the transfer saga through negotiation

with Lyn Oslo and Manchester United. On 2 June 2006, Chelsea, Manchester United and Lyn Oslo reached a settlement to resolve the future of the player. Mikel subsequently signed with Chelsea.

Players to watch in the side kitted out in white with black trim are Bastian Schweinsteiger as well as Köln striker Lukas Podolski. The Mannschaft, as the German football national team is called, will be playing in the World Cup for the 17th time. Germany is one of the three most successful national teams in international competitions, having won three World Cups and three European championships. They are also one of the most consistent teams. Aside from winning three world and continental titles, they were also runner-up three times in the European

Championships, four times in the World

the only nation to have won both the men’s and women’s World Cups.

Coach Radomir Antić and captain Dejan Stankovic of Italian Serie A side Internazionale will be hoping the team in blue and white can outwit the big guns on South African soil. Look out for Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic and Milan Jovanovic of Belgian First Division club Standard Liège. Between 1921 and 1992, the team did not exist as we know it today, as Serbia was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918 – 1943) and, later on, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945 – 1991). The Black Stars Recognisable by their white strip, the Black Stars will be making their second appearance in the World Cup. Ranked 32nd by Fifa, the team is coached by Millovan Rajeva and captained by Stephen Appiah of Bologna in the Italian Serie A. He will be assisted by Michael Essien of Chelsea, Sulley Muntari of Internazionale, also in the Serie A, and the sensational André ‘Dede’ Ayew, son of Ghanaian legend Abedi Pele Ayew. The Ghana Amateur Football Association was founded in 1957 and affi liated to both Caf and Fifa the following year, with Englishman George Ainsley as coach of the national team. Charles Kumi Gyamfi became coach in 1961 and Ghana won successive Africa Cup of Nations championships in 1963 and 1965, and achieved their record win 13-0 away to Kenya. The Ghanaians also reached the fi nal of the tournament in 1968 and 1970, losing 1-0 on each occasion, to DR Congo and Sudan respectively. Their domination of this tournament earned the country the nickname Brazil of Africa in the 1960s.

Coached by Morten Olsen and captained by Jon Dahl Tomasson of Dutch side Feyenoord, Denmark will be playing in the World Cup for the fourth time. Upfront, look out for Niklas Bendtner of Arsenal in England. Football is a national sport in Denmark and when there are important matches, the streets are deserted. Top of the list is Denmark‘s World Cup quarter-fi nal against Brazil in June 1998, which was watched by half the population. Few people in Denmark are likely to forget June 1992, when the team, almost inexplicably, managed to win the European Championship. Denmark had not qualifi ed for the fi nal round of the championship in Sweden, but 10 days before the opening match UEFA asked them to enter the competition instead of Yugoslavia.

Player to watch: Niklas BendtnerHis preferred position is centre forward but he has played on the right side of coach Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger’s 4-3-3 formation. He was named the Danish Football Player of the Year in 2009. In March, Bendtner celebrated his Champions League hat-trick against FC Porto by taking his girlfriend out on the town. The forward was spotted with Danish baroness Caroline Luel-Brockdorff hours after he netted three times in the Gunners’ 5-0 win. The Samurai BlueRanked 45th by Fifa, the Samurai Blue will be playing in the World Cup for the fourth time. Coach Takeshi Okada will be assisted by captain Yugi Nakazawa of J League side Yokohama F Marinos and star player Junichi Inamoto of Kawasaki Frontale as the Japanese players in blue, red and white attempt to dethrone Italy as world champions. Football has a long history in Japan, having reached the country within 10 years of the foundation of the Football Association (FA) in London in 1863, with matches taking place between some English teachers and their pupils in Tokyo and among Western sailors in Kobe in 1871. The offi cially recognised date for the birth of football in the country is September 1873 with a game at the Naval Academy in Tokyo Bay organised by a British offi cer, Archibald Douglas, and his men. The amused Japanese spectators assumed it was a version of kemari, an ancient Japanese ball game connected with the Shinto religion. The fi rst competitive match in the country is reputed to be the 1888 game between the Kobe Regatta and Athletic Club and the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club, a rivalry that continues to the present day.

Expect the boys in red, green and yellow strip from Yaounde to put up a brave fi ght in South Africa with Paul Le Guen barking instructions from the bench and captain Samuel Eto’o of Italian Serie A club Internazionale leading the attack. Cameroon will be making a sixth appearance in the World Cup. Also look out for Alex Song of Arsenal in England.Cameroon played its fi rst match against Somalia in 1960, winning 9–2 and fi rst qualifi ed for the Africa Cup of Nations in 1970, but was knocked out in the fi rst round. Two years later, as host nation, the Indomitable Lions fi nished third in the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations. The side would not qualify for the competition for another 10 years.

Player to watch: Alex SongBorn Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong, he’s a cousin of the legendary Cameroon defender Rigobert Song and plays as a defensive midfi elder in front of the back four and has also played as a stand-in centre back and right back. Originally a utility player on the fringes of the fi rst team at Arsenal, he has been an integral part of the fi rst team since the 2008/9 season. The fi rst match of the Brazil national football team is generally considered to be a 1914 clash between a Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo select team and the English club Exeter City held

in Fluminense’s stadium. Brazil won 2–0 with goals by Oswaldo Gomes and Osman. In 1958 coach Vicente Feola imposed strict rules on the squad for the Fifa World Cup in Sweden. The players were given a list of 40 things they were not allowed to do, including wearing hats or carrying umbrellas, smoking while wearing offi cial team clothing and talking to the press outside allocated times.

manage a 1–1 draw with Honduras in the opening match. Afterwards the team had a 2–1 victory

over Yugoslavia, but lost 1–0 to Northern Ireland. These results were enough to secure progress to the second round where Spain

was drawn into Group B, but defeat to West Germany and a goalless draw with England

meant the hosts were knocked out, and Santamaría was sacked.

THE STADIUMSMagnifi cent is the best way to describe the 10 stadiums for the fi rst Fifa World Cup to be hosted on African soil. Five underwent major renovations in preparation for the global football showpiece - Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg and the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. The other fi ve are new - of these, Moses Mabhida in Durban, Cape Town stadium and the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium are considered architecturally among the best in the world.

This is where the opening ceremony will take place on June 11. Formerly known as the FNB Stadium, the stadium is located at Nasrec, just outside Soweto. Being next to the SA Football Association headquarters means the 94 700-seater football-specifi c facility is the home of South African football. It is the largest stadium in Africa and 11th biggest in the world. The outside

of the stadium is designed to have the appearance of a calabash (African pot), the cladding on the outside is a mosaic of fi re and earthy colours with a ring of lights running around the bottom of the structure, simulating fi re underneath the pot. No spectator will be more than 100m from the action. It is owned by the City of Johannesburg.

Located in Pretoria and owned by the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, the 49 365-seater saw minimal upgrading for it to qualify as a venue for fi rst and second round World Cup matches. The fl oodlights, sound system, scoreboards and stadium roof were improved. The stadium was named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, founder of organised sports in Pretoria. Through the years the stadium has undergone

various name changes as sponsors came and went. From 1998 to 2003 it was named Minolta Loftus after Minolta became the name sponsor. Sponsorship was taken over by Securicor and the name changed to Securicor Loftus in 2003. Two years later the renaming process went full circle when Vodacom took over sponsorship and renamed the stadium its original Loftus Versfeld.

The Johannesburg-based facility, known because of its sponsorship by The Coca-Cola Company as Coca-Cola Park, is located south-east of the city centre and borders the Johannesburg Athletics Stadium, Standard Bank Arena and an Olympic-class swimming pool. It became

the country’s most modern stadium when it was upgraded to a 60 000-seater in 1982. The capacity has since been increased to 62 000 for the World Cup. Ellis Park also hosts rugby matches and is a venue for large events such as open-air concerts.

FREE STATE

Also known as Vodacom Park, this magnifi cent stadium is situated in Bloemfontein and used for rugby and football. The primary tenants of the48 000-seater, owned by the Mangaung Municipality and managed by the Free State Rugby Union, are Free State

Cheetahs, Central Cheetahs, and Bloemfontein Celtic. In preparation for the World Cup, new turnstiles were created, fl oodlights upgraded, electronic scoreboards installed, the sound system revamped, and CCTV and media facilities improved.

The new stadium, with a capacity of 69 070, was known as the Green Point Stadium during the construction stage - the name of the previous stadium on the site. It’s located in Green Point, between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Cape Town city centre and Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, the hugely popular tourist mecca

and shopping venue. Connected to the waterfront by a new road, Granger Bay Boulevard, it’s surrounded by a 60-hectare urban park. Owned by the City of Cape Town, it’s by far one of the most artistic football venues in SA. The Green Point Common, on which it was built, was originally much larger than what now remains.

Set on the shores of the North End Lake, the new facility is the fi rst football-dedicated stadium in the city of PE or surrounding areas. The stadium has an eye-catching, unusual roof structure and a spectacular view overlooking the North End Lake. It belongs to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Before the construction

of this multi-purpose venue, all international football matches were played at the Eastern Province rugby stadium. The new stadium’s playing fi eld is of natural grass with the surrounding area of artifi cial turf. The 46 082-seater can host large scale football and rugby matches and serve as a concert venue.

ROYAL BAFOKENG

NELSON MANDELA BAY

PETER MOKABA

A rugby, football and athletics stadium based in Phokeng near Rustenburg, its capacity was increased to 44 530 for the World Cup. The main west stand was substantially upgraded and enlarged and given a new cantilever roof. Other improvements include new electronic scoreboards, seats, fl oodlights and a public address system. It is owned by the Royal Bafokeng Nation.

It got its name from the late ANC youth leader Peter Mokaba and has a design in largely concrete and is inspired by the locally iconic baobab tree. The steel structure supporting the roof plane is gathered together at each corner of the stadium and supported by giant ‘trunk’ structures which accommodate vertical circulation ramps and service cores. The new 45 000-seater was built next to the old Peter Mokaba Stadium, 5km from the Polokwane city centre. Initial plans to upgrade the old Peter Mokaba Stadium were abandoned in favour of the new facility owned by the Polokwane Municipality.

MOSES MABHIDA

MBOMBELA

The 70 000-seater is named after the former general secretary of the South

African Communist Party and is a multi-use facility owned by the eThekwini

Municipality in Durban. The stadium is adjacent to the Kings Park Stadium, in the Kings Park Sporting Precinct. It

includes an adjoining indoor arena, football museum, sports institute, and a transmodal public transport station.

The ground epitomises the architectural innovation on display in the country

and takes its design inspiration from the South African fl ag, with its grand arch

representing the unity of this sport-loving nation. The two legs of the arch

on the southern side of the stadium come together to form a single footing

on the northern side, symbolising the new unity of a once-divided country.

It has an amphitheatre complete with a cable car which ascends to a viewing

platform at the top of the expansive 350m arch, a staggering 106m above the pitch. The roof is attached to the

arch by 95mm-diameter steel cables. Each seat of the stadium is spacious and

comfortable, providing a clear line of sight to the pitch. The stadium was built

on the site of the old Kings Park Soccer Stadium.

The new 43 500-seater is located 6km west of Nelspruit and is the centrepiece of a proposed sports precinct for athletics and cricket as well as other sporting codes. Most seats are covered by a cantilever roof. The signature feature of the stadium is the 18 roof supports that resemble giraff es. The facility has been made possible through taxpayer funding and is owned by the Mbombela Municipality. It’s a multi-purpose stadium, expected to host key soccer and rugby matches.

Reduce the heat to medium, add a lid and cook for about 1 or 2 minutes, occasionally stirring the mixture with a wooden spoon and when the sides of the mix begin to set, remove the lid and stir the eggs to break up any set pieces. Continue stirring until the eggs are just set but still creamy. Add the fried mushrooms to the scrambled eggs, stir to combine, then serveaccompanied by a green salad.SERVES 4.
